That white juicy fruit with the dark red skin is called mangosteen, they sell it in Bali as well, especially at the markets.

The mukade also exist in all regions in Indonesia, Chief, here it called “Kelabang”and it poisonous as well. The one u saw is called “Kaki Seribu” (Thousand legs), not poisonous.

I was there about 30 years ago, it’s probably changed a fair bit since then. I remember a village called Roho we reached after another jungle village stay, hitching rides on the back of logging trucks with big rocks flying at our heads from the huge wheel treads. They had clam shells that were about a metre high standing around the village, I bet they’d be worth a fortune now. Mick Jagger even turned up on a small cruiser when we were on Bandaneira. Great times.
