Chatting with an Expert on Personality Types (Myers-Briggs 16 Personalities)
"In personality typology, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is an introspective self-report questionnaire indicating differing psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions.[1][2][3] The test attempts to assign four categories: introversion or extraversion, sensing or intuition, thinking or feeling, judging or perceiving. One letter from each category is taken to produce a four-letter test result, such as "INTJ" or "ESFP"." - wikipedia

@wertfasd
@wertfasd Жыл бұрын
@@jodawgsup It is different from horoscopes due to the fact that you had to answer a set of questions to reach a certain type. Now whether those set of questions are accurately constructed is another topic to discuss but through these set of questions you yourself are just describing yourself and the personality is just a 'summary' of what could be your personality. Of course this is not entirely scientific as no one peer reviewed the process but it does make sense for someone if he/she tried studying his/her personality type than just assuming the results of his/her type is correct. Horoscopes on the other hand is just based on your birthday which really doesn't correlate to anything significant. Or you mean to tell me statistics are unscientific since its basing off of surveys and questionnaires to people possibly picked with bias. Your turn Mr scientist who didn't really provide any constructive argument so far ;)

It makes sense that people often get NF on the tests. NFs are most likely the ones drawn to personality tests and typology in the first place. Most sensors are like I don’t have time for this or don’t take it seriously. A lot of thinkers would be like what’s the point, this is nonsense, and just point out how flawed it all is.

I used to study and read this stuff non stop many years ago after reading an almost intrusively accurate description of my "type". There is definitely a lot of practical uses for being able to type or roughly type people around you and of course, a lot to be learned about your own strengths and weaknesses. I think its very important to remember however, what the word personality means. It stems from the root "persona" which literally means mask in latin. Your personality isn't really you, its just the mask you put on to engage with the world. But when you take that mask off, thats when life really begins!
@carikabester8335

Your personality is you as much as your skin and bones, if you put up a 'mask' to engage the world with you can never take it off unless you are literally acting or have taken a heavy dose of psychedelics, even then it lurks in the background. Your persona encompasses your readiness to share or withhold information from people and is very much the real you whether you feel it as a subconscious force or not.
@jaymoney522
@jaymoney522 Жыл бұрын
@@Felix-dx2qw "Your personality is you as much as your skin and bones are you" - I completely agree with this statement. If a little piece of skin falls off is it still you? If you lose a finger is it still you? The two most fundemental misidentifications are with the body, and the mind. The truth is you are neither of those things- something far greater!
@Felix-dx2qw
@Felix-dx2qw Жыл бұрын
@@jaymoney522 You are all those things, the far greater being you talk about is dependant on your biological self to exist and experience life in this dimension. We are the universe experiencing itself as individuals. I think what you're not identifying is the difference between an individual and the universe they emerged from, there are far greater forces at play within and around us but we are just a piece of that. I think like most people, you fancy the idea that you're a multidimensional 'greater' being or force held in a biological shell, but really we are just the shell until eons have passed and all the energy from us, our minds to our skin along with the trees and stars has returned to it's other, 'greater' state.

i don’t understand what you mean by mask. I try my best to make others feel good and to act nice and stuff. and i’ve taken the advice of “not caring what anyone thinks of you” and it makes for a pretty fucking miserable life. as far as i’m concerned all wear a mask around people all i want, but that “mask” makes others feel great, as well as me.

FJ has feet! I've watched his channel for a few years now and love his videos, but just realized we only ever see him from the waist up. Thanks for this interview. It's nice to hear a serious conversation about MBTI types. Although it may be dismissed by a lot of people, the original work by Carl Jung is fascinating. As Frank says, the insight into one's cognitive preferences helps a person understand why they interact with the world the way they do. That self knowledge can only help a person live a better life.

Though this not be a hard science, it sure has helped me identify how people communicate and what they prioritize. Because of that, I can improve the way I understand and interact with others. I also have this belief that a "perfect type" is a balance of all the traits. So if we are too far into one side of any single trait, we should maybe evaluate ourselves and how that behavior could be impacting us negatively. For example, there's nothing wrong with being introverted, but you still need some kind of regular social interaction. I often have to force myself to make plans, and I always feel better after I do. I like to see personality theory as more of a tool than anything!

I also had noticed my tenancy to approach things a certain way and was working to be more balanced in the areas that were making it hard to communicate with others. Once I took the test it was crazy how it described exactly what I already noticed. It mainly helps me to confirm what I already knew and explore how to use that information to improve my communication with other and get out of corners I box myself into.

I think MBTI is a fantastic tool for learning more about the people around you and their thinking processes (and I’m a scientist). The function stack helped me understand so much more about myself and my friends and family. There’s absolutely merit there (more so than the Big 5, imo). Obviously, it’s just a template for someone’s personality and doesn’t cover any of the nuances of upbringing, trauma, etc. And it really doesn’t have a scientific basis, like Frank said. Im 70 this month and did the test a few times out of the book Please Understand Me in my teens! I was INFJ. Borderline on the I N F but extreme J. So now I learn Im rare and it actually explains a lot for me over my life because making true connections with people just hasnt happened. My opportunty to find greatness are very limited in relationships and jobs. Im a loner since childhood. I tell people im an introvert with a motormouth….at least when I choose to communicate. I dont always feel like it. I need to be triggered by interesting stuff….deeper not superficial chatter. Ive gotten less extreme in the J part which has contributed to my sanity but it took a lot of decades! Being misunderstood is a nonevent. I think that happens to a lot of people. I figured out my narsisstic mom was basically riddled with insecurities in my teens and forgave her for her hard to be with stuff. She could see herself pretty well with therapy and wasnt that bad. Its too bad…she could have been more happy otherwise! And I could have been more understood by this deeply intellegent person.. she did nick name me Sympathy. Instaed of my name Cynthia. Oh….she came because she gave me the book and helped me understand it. The book could be more clear in my opinion. I guess I should have been a teacher. I would have made a great teacher in certain subjects. Art mainly. Yes I had hard to treat depression before I was even 20. Some really dark reality things. Very little denial….if any. Ha ha world could…humans could be better. There are some rotten apples in the animal kingdom too

Mbti isnt scientific but you can make deductions about peoples type via the scientific method. Mbti is a measurement of how one makes decisions, and which axes of perception and judgement lead them to those decisions. People tend to have a dominant preference for a specific axis of judgement and a specific axis of perception, and people tend to have a primary function that dominates their decision making.

The importance of personality whether is not an exact science it’s understanding others for who they are instead of judging them harshly. No one is perfect and everyone can learn.

Another religious cult with no objectivity and scientific basis. The more people fall for pseudo nonsense like this the more detached from reality they become whilst thinking they're becoming more "awake" to a cause.

Hello, I'm Italian but I follow you, with simultaneous translation subtitled. And, of course, I understand English a little bit. However I agree with you, and in my opinion, who says that MbTI is a pseudoscientific idea, well it is usually "extroverted thought" . Anyway, of course, maybe the Mbti system. It is not always precise, it does not enjoy certainty, because it is based on people, and as we know, personalities are not cut perfectly, They evolve for the better and for the worse, continuously, it is unthinkable to have a clear shot. But at least Mbti is a system, which is better than the unconscious idea that anyone can ever make. It is based on data, not bias. It is active, not passive. It is an important tool.
