#books #booktube #bookcast
Welcome to the 63rd episode of Chatting with Nutts! My guest this episode of Chatting With Nutts is Steve Donoghue, critic and booktuber. Steve is almost assuredly the most well read guest I've had on the show and without a doubt the most widely read. I am excited to chat books and learn all sorts of things from him in this stream.

I'm a big fan of Steve. My enjoyment of his channel, and by extension, his personality, doesn't come down to how much I agree or disagree with him. His breadth of knowledge, wide range of taste and reading resume is enviable. And whatever else one might say, he's not boring. The world would be a lot more dull without him. Another talk down the road where you two focus more specifically on fantasy would be great. I love hearing him talk about older SF and fantasy works that have been forgotten, as well as his take on some of the more modern stuff.

Thanks for doing this interview Jimmy. Its great to be introduced to Steve. I am inspired by him even if I don't agree with everything. That does not bother me too much if I don't agree and I feel no need to comment on what I don't agree with. I hope you are feeling better and are taking it easy. As a wise young man once said: Keep turning the page.😊

I am on my quest to watch all of the "Chatting with Nutts" Episodes. 8 / 64 Progress. - I watched this one already. Steve is great, he even once replied to me, to a request book recommendation via email. If I am looking for a non-fiction book to read or to de-bro-ify myself, I just watch one of Steve's 6660ish videos :) Great Chat Jimmy - warrants a repeat!!!!!!!!

This chat was WILD. I really loved the bit he shared about that there is no hierarchy of creative endeavors. This is something that has bothered me for a long time. It shouldn't matter what you're writing/creating. If you write children's books? Do it well and create something amazing. If you write massive historical fiction or fantasy books? Do it well and create something amazing. When people start turning up their noses about other genres or mediums, it makes me less interested in theirs.

A Cormac McCarthy book having no women in it doesn't automatically make it a bad story. Would it be a bad story if there were no men?

James Whites' Sector General series needs a good adaptation. A mix of space opera, and medical drama, it would work so well.

Did he say he reads 120 pages an hour? How? I am doing good if I am hitting 40-45 pages an hour.

I clicked on this thinking "hell yeah, two booktubers I really enjoy are gonna have a chat". 25 minutes in my conflict avoidance riddled monkey brain was screaming but it all worked out 😂. Steve definitely has some opinions 😂. I too will never read Marion Zimmer Bradley for reasons 💀 Also, I DNF'd one of her novels when I was younger because it was terrible. So we aren't missing anything. "Have you read A Song of Ice and Fire?" I had no idea where this was gonna go 😱. I'm glad that went well 😂. Wait, people don't like A Feast for Crows? Wtf? That was my favorite book in the series(it has been a long time since I read them and I have not read A Dance With Dragons so bear that in mind). I love me some Reaper's Gale. Have you read Eyes of the Overworld yet? You do need to get back to the Dying Earth. It follows a sociopath that you spend as much time loving as you do hating. I felt as relieved as you did after he answered the Glen Cook question 😂. DBZ is based AF. Literally the foundation my childhood was built on. I loved your trepidation when he asked what non-fantasy books you like 😂. I wouldn't want to answer that either. If he said he hated A Confederacy of Dunces it would break my heart. This episode has ended up being one of my favorites so far(I'm still listening to the backlog).

My god. Jimmy, I applaud your patience. I have zero tolerance for that level of narcissism. BUT, I am glad you did that, it is good to not be in the echo chamber as you said. I will say that I wish he could articulate his thoughts and arguments in as thoughtful and professional way as you can, rather than rolling eyes and laughing from on high…his only critique on Stoner was it is too simple and surface, dudebro, women hating drivel. However, I think he missed an opportunity to hear why others might like it, or what those subtleties were, but instead he was too busy talking and laughing and dismissing. Sad.

I would be remiss if I didn’t come back and mention that over time the conversation gets more enjoyable. Not sure if it’s that he gets more comfortable, but when he gets to talking about screen adaptations about an hour or so in he loosens up and starts articulating his thoughts much more effectively, maybe I just got acclimated to his schtick, but he was making cogent points.

There is an argument to be made that you’re imputing narcissism onto a person not because they actually are that - narcissistic - but because you disagree with them.
@johns870
@johns870 10 ай бұрын
@@MaximusStetichI suppose that is possible. I’ve since grown to like him a little more after watching his own KZfaq channel - he is more affable and down to earth on that channel. I haven’t read Stoner (yet) so I don’t have a dog in the fight, I just didn’t care for his somewhat mocking style of argumentation - I wasn’t “hating” the player, I was “hating” the game. He is one of, if not the, most informed reviewers - but I thought the way he led off saying that (I’m paraphrasing) he enjoyed ripping apart drivel that authors put out because they should know better. That’s not me disliking his opinion, it’s me disliking the zeal with which he eviscerates authors based on his subjective, albeit authoritative, opinion.

I've never felt the need to comment but I'm just 5 minutes in and I don't like how this man talks about books just wow. The amount of narcissism and condescending tone is infuriating to say the least. The way he talks about books and art is just sad. Such a limited and narrow perspective to view books at.

Watching this Donoghue guy is like watching a flamboyantly bad actor hamming it up on stage, and then slowly realizing with increasing horror that he seriously thinks he's putting on a great performance. Embarrassingly pompous. And can't argue a case or point of view to save his life.

I think he was definitely confused regarding some of his criticisms. Most of what he criticised wasn't handholding, like he claims. He seems to be entirely missing the aesthetic value of Things That Are Fucking Cool.

@shutdownseti2493 I've found that book critics often make for bad movie critics. And the other way around probably too.

I think there's plenty to be said for how writers like Williams and Murakami are venerated over more obscured and deeper writers, but this guy is being really obnoxious about it! An interesting discussion that Donoghue has turned toxic without comprehendable reason. EDIT: the conversation eases as it goes on and he's still opinionated but less needlessly inflammatory and it's fun! Good episode :)
