Welcome to my April Homeschool Update! I was rushing to finish this video so didn't mention a few things I want to get to: one being an update on my Kindergarten curriculum that is in the works: It is still coming along nicely, and I'm still aiming for a release in the first half of June. It would be sooner except for the custom illustrations that are needed for some of the activities--my artist sister graduated from college THIS WEEK...a momentous milestone achievement and also one that means she'll have more time to get artwork completed. :)

I spent a lot of January, February and March very sick while expecting baby number 7, so feeling better in April and able to do more things has been a breath of fresh air. I had just started to implement Spanish before the morning sickness really hit so that was the first thing that fell off the wagon. This week I finally picked it back up again. It is very fun to see my elementary children acting out the Spanish sentences I am reading. It is the end of our school year, but I decided to try to do it anyway. Maybe I can keep it up over the summer. I really enjoy hearing your monthly updates. It inspires me listening to a second generation homeschooler like myself and seeing and hearing your enthusiasm for teaching your boys.

So glad you've started to feel better! That definitely makes a big impact on the school day--it's amazing how much less overwhelming a homeschool day is when you as mom are feeling good vs. when you're not.

You always make it all sound so fun and I wish I had more kids, more books, more days, more energy to try all the things 😃 That’s so awesome (and sweet) that your oldest was so excited about giving a speech! Definitely something to encourage. A few years ago we were part of a very small local coop, and while my older students needed lots of encouragement for presentations, my kindergartner just loved them. He couldn’t really read fast enough yet to read his speeches, so I would just draw pictures on a page for him as prompts and he would “read” it from there. I love how you do so much journaling with your son, and don’t limit it to the amount he can write. That seems to be a great way to bridge the gap between what he can actually write and what all you want recorded. ❤️❤️❤️ your videos!

Don't we all wish we had a little more time and energy for all the fun things we 'could' do? Also, I should point out, that two of my sisters have told me, even though they don't live close, they watch my videos now and say they can see the distinct change from me not being pregnant anymore...it's like I've come alive again. Pregnancy is tough, so I tend to feel AMAZING and ENERGETIC shortly afterwards, probably just because for the first time in so long, I feel human again. One of the ways we have so much "variety" these days is that our lessons in each individual thing are quite short on any given day--they have to be, with a 4 and 6 year old, they don't have long focused attention spans for just one thing anyways, but these short lessons add up over time! I have really been enjoying our partnership notebooking approach and journaling. He's been getting more into drawing these days, drawing about Magellan's voyage or different things we've studied, and I know some of these drawings are going to stay so precious to me for years to come.

We just started our own timeline notebook as well! So far my son has added Robin Hood, the release of Star Wars, and the publication of the Lord of the Rings. 😆Oh, and Pearl Harbor. It's wonderful you can do a playgroup with other bilingual families! And it is so cool they enjoy the curriculum and are gaining confidence. :) Keeping that minority language alive is sooo much work! It definitely slides when I get tired. I've noticed that when my children become reluctant to speak the language, the most effective thing I can do is increase the input (though definitely not the easiest). At one point I bribed my kids to keep me accountable to speaking our minority language. We had an empty jar, and every time I slipped into English, they got to add a chocolate chip to the jar, and share it all at the end of the day. Needless to say, they were very diligent in catching me. 😂

Gotta get all of those important historical dates in! Being able to do a weekly "class" with other bilingual kids their own age is something I never thought would be possible...there just aren't many Spanish/English speaking families locally, for very understandable reasons. But it's been a true gift! I am not at all opposed to bribery, that sounds like great motivation for them! We've been getting a lot better about implementing - hey, if you're asking for (a snack, going to the park, to help stir the soup)...it's more likely the answer will be yes if you ask in Spanish. That's motivating!

@@SevenInAll That sounds like great implementing! I remember getting soooo annoyed when my parents ignored me asking for stuff in the majority language. I don't think I really appreciated their efforts until I was an older teenager.

We started rolling into the new year thru April!!! I’m not attached with the start and end dates even though we now need to mark them for each curriculum for the state!!! I’m glad both me and my husband travel to the same places for work so we can travel as a family!!! I forgot how hard the beginning of a language for bilingual language skills till we started teaching our younger 2 kids who can as my older kids are awesome in German now!!! I’m hearing a lot of German slang from them!!! We have to remember to talk more German!!! My older kids remembered learning exploration and taught my younger kids when we started sequence one!!! I agree with you on history!!! We seem to be taking longer on sequence one!!! I love hearing my older kids discussing more than written narration!!! We haven’t added in our family dates in any of our books of centuries!!!

Yes, the beginning years of language learning can be tough--feels a bit like rolling a ball uphill. But it gets easier once they build enough confidence and vocabulary.

lol...This is why I'm a little bit weird...I'm just over here fully embracing my true nerdy self. I love history, I love languages, I love English, books, Science.... I'm even learning to love math just because my child does, and now I think of his excitement when I think of math. "all of the above" is a good answer for me...don't make me pick one favorite.

Rachel, I was just wondering if Spanish was learned as a 2nd language in your childhood? Your Spanish sounds so beautiful when you speak it!
@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll 2 ай бұрын
No, I had almost zero experience with Spanish until I was a young adult--my now-husband proposed to me when I was 18, and I immediately signed up for Spanish 101 for my next semester of college. Since our children have been born, I've been gradually building up my skills in actually using the language more around the home. I still feel nervous speaking outside of my family....but I really appreciate the compliment!

So CURIOUS! What do you keep? My guess is you don’t have to have a homeschool portfolio, BUT if you did, what would you do???
@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll 2 ай бұрын
I do not have to keep a portfolio, because of that, I just keep whatever "makes my heart sing." :) Usually projects that show their creativity or personality the best. If I did have to keep a portfolio, I'd probably keep mid-year and end of year tests (or mid-year/end-of-year worksheets if there are no tests). I'd keep any writing projects and the notebook/journals that we make for geography and history (those I keep anyway). I do reverse-record keeping in my planner, so I do have a pretty good record of all we've done, even though a lot of things (science experiments, for examples) aren't necessarily "keep-able."

They were from the "History Pockets" from Evan Moor about Explorers of North America. I was handed down several of the "History Pockets" books from a homeschooler with older children, so I just pulled a few resources from those.
