I've been shopping around for a cheap high-voltage PSU and I recently came across this unit on ebay. It comes from a Cisco network switch and has the part number C3KX-PWR-715WAC V02, and seeing that it is very easy to mod into a standalone DC power supply, I took the plunge and now have it paired with a Riden RD6018 so that I can power a selection of 48V and 50V industrial fans.

That's a pretty cool setup! I see the Cisco PSU is 56Vdc 12.8A 715W max output and input is 100-240Vrms 10.5A max so the efficiency is 715W/1050W or 68% at full load. Probably 70-75% tops in a more optimal range. That's not too bad. Serves a purpose.

Thanks :) Yeah the efficiency is not great, but as a benchtop power supply for hobby electronics it's fantastic. I suspect with my use it's unlikely to go over 300W, but I like having the headroom.

As a follow-up to this comment, now that I've been using this PSU for a few weeks, it definitely gets pretty warm under even light loads of just a few watts, so not an ideal choice for people who like efficiency! The efficiency would be marginally improved with better airflow and cooling, but that would require building a different enclosure for it. Perhaps a future project! :)

how do you start the PSU

It will start automatically when you connect it to mains voltage. The PSU powers up as normal, and there will be 0V output if you haven't connected pins 11 and 12 on the header. As soon as these pins are connected, the 56V output is enabled.

This is a different model so the pinout might be different, sorry I'm not sure about the EDPS-350. Try shorting each pin to GND one at a time, and that should work...
