Cheap & Easy Flooring Installation For Van Life
After traveling approximately 11,500 miles in my No Build Van Build with the factory non-slip mat I have opted to make a change!! Over time in such a small space I have found that the floor is a bit uncomfortable in those moments when you need to kneel down onto the floor to reach something in one of the under bed bins. After researching possibilities I found that anti fatigue mats or foam interlocking tiles were the suggested solution for knee pain reduction. So I made a small investment to try something new and see if I like it.
Today we are installing the Sorbus Interlocking Floor Mats in the Grey Wood Grain pattern. The squares are approximately 12x12 and can easily be laid on your own, so check out this video and learn more about this van life project!!

Thanks for coming along for the ride despite not being a van person yourself!!

I was thinking that as well with the insulation. Even though it is very small and thin, it is a bit more than what I had previously so this could serve many purposes. We will see how it holds up!!! The mic I am going to tinker with a bit more to see if placement of the mic is an issue. Someone suggested that this style of mic can be impacted by placement and movement so before I film with it again I will be checking to see if there can be improvements made. If not then we will keep trying...lol... I am so used to my rode mic on my regular camera which is classified as one of the best mics on the market so I harshly judge anything that is not it..lol

Sadly when I imported the footage from this mic it would not allow for manipulation of volume even in final cut for some reason... so the sound really sounded pitchy and muffled and then louder in some sections. But that is why I really wanted to see what everyone thought.. I wanted to make sure it wasn't just me being used to my audio from my professional mic on my main camera. sometimes we get so used to something that we are hyper critical... but the feedback has been wonderful!!! I have my small welcome mat that I keep to place my shoes which comes in handy, but yes it is much easier to keep clean a smoother surface... I can just use my little dust brush over it and then if need be a baby wipe to clean up anything that might have made its way onto the floor....

Wow - lots of loyal fans offering suggestions for improvement to sound. Love the new flooring. I'm thinking about changing up the flooring in my NV to something "hard" (I currently use some carpet). It is helpful to see that others were experiencing the sound the way I thought it sounded also...I will continue to work with it off camera to see if I can get it more regulated.. if not then I will just film with my larger camera and pro mic... :) As for the knees yes yes and yes!! Thank you Peter and to you!!! I find that because I have the mat below it seems to work so far because it does not fall off into the grooves of the van flooring.... but I do have a few bends that might over time pose a challenge so I will make sure to keep everyone up to date on how it is going. I think that is the best thing about the van world though we can more easily change things than you can in a home because it is a much smaller space to work with.

I appreciate your being open to constructive criticism. That particular style of mic can be fickle when moving. Many are great for vlogging in a more stationary setting but when you move they appear more muffled. I would suggest a change in placement by clipping lower than the neckline of the shirt, even though the instructions say this is good placement this causes a deeper tone in post production. Think of where it would sit on a tank top or button down. Then place accordingly.

Be sure in advance to get park entrance permit as they are limiting numbers. Great camping in Rocky! Be sure to spend a few days then go over divide to Grand Lake and one place also awesome Glenwood Springs (go to natural water pool and vapor caves nearby and head South to Mesa Verde (need to make arrangements for tours that go inside the cliff dwellers houses). The reservation system isn’t bad If you enter before 9 and after I think 3 no permit required. If camping then I think there is no issue as that’s within the park. We just visited Estes Park and I had no issue getting permits. You can get one for a 2 hour window like 9-11 enter and leave and can come back. Camping at Rocky campground close to Estes Park is what I’d suggest in middle of week. Regardless enjoy your time there!

It looks really nice with the design and how easy to install the puzzle tiles. It would be great if maybe you can do a review video of it based on if it can act as an insulation say during winter camping or when really hot weather and using an ac in the camper van. This was super easy to install and did in fact provide a little bit of floor insulation. However I did notice after some time traveling too cold or moisture climate that these tiles are not the greatest fit because they do swell with the internal moisture.

I would be interested in knowing which brands you might suggest. I have a RODE PRO for my larger camera and love it... but for cell phones things are very different....

Nice. I think I'd put duct tape on the back seams to keep them from separating. The mic right up on your neck makes a weird vibration in your voice. But I'm sure you'll sort out the proper placement. You're good at that. :) Jon in rural BC, Canada

I would have to agree with the audio quality comments. I am not a fan of the mic, please don’t be upset.

No ma'am, I would never be upset with that feedback. I wanted to post the video so it can be an honest review of the product but also so I could see what the audience picked up on and thought. I did no audio correction on the video the same as I typically do with my larger camera, so I was kinda thinking along the same lines. lol... no worries

I'm following this install, im curious to see how it holds up. I love the fact that it's so easy to install and light weight, wondering if I could use this in my NV but use glue or something to hold them together? What about cleaning them or getting them wet? Looking forward to your update. Maybe turn the mic down?
@BunnyPlaysHere
@BunnyPlaysHere 3 жыл бұрын
I thought about that as well with the glue if I like them it would be very easy to after cutting pull them back up and put glue in the joints... I might consider that if I like them!!! The mic sadly cannot be adjusted in post for some reason... so I am going to continue to tinker with it off camera

@@tgburnsable been thinking about installing these, could you tell me how’s it holding with your dog’s nails? I have a big dog. Your reply would be much appreciated.
@tgburnsable

@@carmenmartinez2882 I think they would probably hold up with your dog’s nails. I installed them but had to take them out after about 200 miles! The way I have my van configured my bed and storage shelf is only attached in the back with ratchet straps. Everything slid around on them so they had to go! Just poor planning on my part. I was headed out on a long trip and didn’t have time to do anything else. I really liked the tiles and they actually made the van a little quieter. I might wonder about the area where the tiles go together being a problem if your dog was heavy. They are very easy to install and maybe some carpet tape on the underside might help keep them together with the dog. My dog is little, only 16 pounds. I am planning on putting them back in when I solve my attachment issues! Good luck.

Do you think you might put in vinyl plank flooring at some point as it is easy to install & remove later?
@BunnyPlaysHere
@BunnyPlaysHere 3 жыл бұрын
I might try that at a later point... My goal with this floor was to add some padding to the floor for my knees since I cannot stand inside, however if I do go in with the plants I will have to install a base flooring so it will be even. That is a thought however and I do like the way that it looks.

I put it in as a trial to see if it would address the issues I had with needing softness... it worked in way of that however it expanded and contracted a lot with the weather... it also held moisture from my shoes at night... which ultimately ended the run with the floor... I have since found something which should work with those factors... and hope to present it after a little trail run...
