This video is about the design of my folding sofa bed of my van conversion. This folding sofa bed design can be used in any van sizes.
The video is oriented for a do it yourself (DIY) van conversion project, but can be used for any purpose: in a house, wood camp or whatever situations...

A very good diy design.. it's clever and it works. That being said, I prefer the more compact VW rock n roll system which unfortunately you need to buy! And while I'm taking parts from a trashed VW, I wouldn't mind grafting on the whole sliding roof assembly from a 21 window microbus. 😊

Eric, thank you for your videos! Your simple and functional build is having a big influence on planning my own build. Thanks so much for sharing! This bed design is so elegant. Love it. Here are a few video requests, ranked by importance (to me at least): 1) Sink/Water System: How to set up electric pump & water tanks 2) Table: Design of telescoping leg and 3 rails. Where to purchase similar leg. 3) Mattress cushions design 4) Solar: Which panel/battery/inverter did you choose, and why? Where is battery stored? Please detail wiring solar panel through rear door. 👍You have made the best instructional video on the bed construction I have seen. I love the fact that you went to the trouble to make the paper mock-ups to illustrate how the design works and how to calculate the dimensions. So many other KZfaqrs lack the insight to realize some things just don't show up as well in the real world as they do through a diagram. I'm looking forward to your electrical set-up and hope you will go into the same level of detail on the connections. I'm having a hard time understanding how to calculate the size of the battery, what needs an inverter, and how to run the wiring efficiently. Thanks for creating such a great video. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I agree, with such an interesting project, you don't really need music to keep our attention, it's distracting from your teaching techniques. You do make a good teacher Eric. This is genius. I was trying to convince myself that driving a Sprinter as an everyday car could work. But this...this is everything I need for road trips AND I can drive it every day. Eric enjoys Earth Hey Eric! I am going to start by taping an outline on the floor to see where I want to place stuff. I thought it would give me a good starting point for movement and access in the van. I would like access to leave through the back as well so may go with a single bed size. I am 5 ft 3 so think I will consider a shorter bed with extension options. I am considering a drawer system for a kitchen to come out the back from the shelving unit. Thank you for replying! probably one of, if not the best camper bed designs on youtube... one bed that folds into 2 couches cleanly and still has storage underneath. this is what i'd want to build in my van or element for sure

Hi Eric, First of all, thank you for sharing your design with us. I found this incredibly useful in my camper van that I’m currently converting. I based my design off yours, safe to say it works great!! I would like to share a few modifications that may be useful to others as well. I used 1x3’s as slats instead of plywood. First and biggest reason is mold, which can potentially form under the plywood and into the mattress. The added ventilation underneath seems worth it. Second reason is one sheet of plywood can only give a maximum width of 48 inches. Travelling with my girlfriend and dog, a full size mattress (54” x 75”) makes more sense. The 1x3’s allow for a larger bed width and easier mattress installation (only need to cut a full size mattress horizontally). Third reason is less weight, I saved 10-15 lbs. using 1x3’s instead of plywood. Obviously, I had to change a few things to make your design work without the plywood, more than happy to share the sketchup model! Thank you again. @@MsLeebib Along with the reasons above, my modification to Eric's design provides an additional 6 inches of width on the bed. Minimal, but significant improvement for 2 people. Either the original or modified design will be more than enough to support you both! Hope this helps, good luck on the conversion journey!

Fifteen million more people need to watch this play-list! Thank you so much Eric for self-lessly sharing your accumulated insights *hugs* I am hailing from B.C. Interior in Western Canada. I go outside to get a big gulp of that intoxicating Rocky Mountain forest air and then come in with all that insane oxygen to best absorb your genius :3 My father has often inspired me, when I was just a kiddo, with his ability to make anything anywhere all by himself. I remember him building this elevated "bed-room" in the back of a retail space in Honolulu, Oahu on a flower street (a street where many florists congregate) b/c then we can get ahead--a little faster--by not having to pay residential rent and pay for a flower shop.. It was like.. van-living without four wheels!! But you take the same can-do attitude and re-mix it with 25 years of van-living--to really take it up another notch. There's so much elegance and thoughtfulness to how you do things. It's a sight to behold!! I love it!! I am speech-less!!

Salut. I will be using your build. After 3 years of searching and never being truly convinced, this is it. While I live in Germany and will have to modify your build to fit small mini cargo van, no high roof it, will work. You and Drew building things, are my favourite channels. You are both Canadians! love this bed design! I coverted my van a couple of year's ago with a small single bed however I know have two giant mastiffs that go camping with me and they sleep with me do I need a bigger bed. this design will be perfect. Thank you

Thank you so much for this! After watching many, many videos I chose your bed design for camping with my daughter. Since my fridge fits between the front seats and I wanted a full-width bed I put a 20" kitchen tower with a slide out sink and stove/microwave (run off inverter) where your fridge sits. It slides forward and back with the front passenger seat for extra leg room and swivels so I can cook inside siting on the bench or outside standing at the passenger sliding door.

The channel is more about giving technics, inspiration and motivation to realize your dream of van conversion rather then duplicate my van conversion. Hola Eric. I'm so glad that after researching and viewing countless videos I've finally stumbled upon your sofa bed build. I'll most likely use your design for my upcoming Nissan NV200 conversion. Your explanation, photos, paper template and tips are clear and superb in guiding DIYers like me. I'm in my mid 70s, a polio survivor with 2 artificial knees yet have hiked 4 caminos, biked 4 long distance trips (3 in Europe) and 2 motorcycle trips (Vietnam & Nicaragua), mostly solo. However, you still inspire me!! Thank you for sharing!!!

I love so much camping-biking long distance in Europe! I crossed Danemark. It was amazing! I am always seeking for other trips! I think the NV200 is a great Van for a conversion! I lived in Denmark in 1969-70 and loved that country and its people, except the cost of living and the long winter!! My 3 bike trips in Europe are: 2017 - Moselle river (Trier to Koblenz) then up the Rhine to Bingen and turn around downriver to Koln, roughly 200+ miles. 2018 - same trip as 2017 but with my wife. 2019 - Danube river from Passau, Germany to Budapest, Hungary, passing Austria and Slovakia, 500 miles. In 2018 I also biked from Pittsburgh to DC along the GAP and C&O trails, 344 miles. I stayed in cheap hotel, hostel & Airbnb on these trips but you can camp most of the routes. I highly recommend any/all of these routes. I contracted polio at the age of 3, in 1949, and could not engage in any physical activities until my first knee replacement in 2010. With the pain gone, I hiked my first camino from St. Jean Pied du Port, France to Santiago de Compestela, Spain, 500 miles, in 2013. Since then nothing stops me - until this pandemic!! BTW, I'm a minimalist. I pack only 11-12 pounds on all my biking & hiking trips. Questions about the sofa/bed design: what kind and how thick is the plywood that you used? Would you recommend using 2x2 instead of 1x3 for the frame/legs? Also, for the table: where did you get the rail (?!) and the leg?? I hope to learn more from you. Again, much appreciation.

Thank you for sharing your trips! I will keep your comment not far away to plan my next European cyclo-camping trip! It is much appreciated! I used 2x3, not 1x3, for the bed. Depending of your weight, the weight of the person that you sleep with, or other factors, it may be ok with your suggestion, or may be not enough to avoid racking the bed... I didn’t try with 2x2... I will do a video about materials... it is a good suggestion! Thanks again for your comments! Enjoy planning and doing your van conversion project! You won’t regret it! I wish you the best! ✌️

Merci pour ta vidéo ! Mon lit s'appelle ... Éric lol ! J'ai refait tout mon van avec la configuration de ton plan lit / banquette car on ne voit que très rarement les couettes oreillers etc qui prennent tellement de place et en plus c'est tellement simple de transformer la banquette en lit !!! Un vrai bonheur par rapport à un lit peigne !!!!! Merci 10000 fois pour tes explications et plans ! Nous sommes ravies de ce nouvel aménagement !!!! Hi Eric. We have watched all your videos and are using your ideas as a model for our 2008 Honda Odyssey. I just finished making the cardboard mock-up for the the bed. I've seen many requests in the comments for an answer to the question of how you secure the bed to the van. When you get back to making videos I hope you will put a top of your list.
