As a kid, I used to hate bitter melon. Then one day my aunt brought some over. Stuffed with pork hash and stewed in black beans. It smelled really good so I gave it a try....I've been hooked ever since!

Kalihi is in the house!! Best places for food overall in my opinion. Aloha Misty.. That Bento, wow! Blistering hot dog creamy like Zippys chili, and that crunch in the chicken looks good!!! And that butter sauce looks good on the Garlic Mahi too! The bitter Melon has me curious. I can't say it looks good, but I wouldn't know unless I tried:) and me too, my demographic is older. I think because the long format videos are designed for a more mature crowd. Thanks again for another great video. I'll message you soon🤙 Bumped into Michelle and Jose last night. HAHA SEAN!!! If you've never tried Bitter Melon, go for it!! I cannot say I like it. Most of my elder relatives love it, but I just can't handle it unless I have a whole glass of tea to wash it down! (as a kid had to eat it...Sugar works!). However, I"ve see your videos and I know you can stomach bitter melon! 😏

They were a regular lunch spot when we used to work two buildings down from New Island BBQ. Them and Alicia Market and Fuji Market. Brings back memories

Tried New Island BBQ , food was great . It’s in an industrial area , catering to the workers in that area , but the folks were nice , and food was tasty and reasonable . Thanks for the tip . We might go back and try the Kao Yuk ( fatty pork )

I'm so glad you went there to try it. It is an industrial area but that whole area has many gems. Doesn't look like a great place but tons of great food in the corner of Sand Island. Mahalo for sharing your experience!

Hi Misty, thanks for another great review and for promoting/supporting local mom & pop places. I particularly like the mahi mahi and stuffed bitter melon plates. The stuffed bitter melon with black bean sauce is a Cantonese preparation and is authentic. Yum 😋💕 Hope all is well with you 🙏

Good golly, all the food looks so good. Bittermelon many ways❤ - stir fried with eggs, stir fried with beef in black bean sauce, and stuffed with pork "meatloaf" & steamed. Not hardcore enough to eat bittermelon soup though. Mahalo for showcasing this place - a plus is that it's near Alicia's Mkt

Aloha Misty: This was a great food find in my old neighborhood. That bitter melon plate lunch was really awesome and authentic - they really made a large plate of it. I remember my grandfather used to make the dish with the black bean sauce. One or two pieces of the stuffed bitter melon with some long-grain rice, no Jasmine rice rice in my days, would have made an entire meal for us. I hope you get to try the Ong-choy plate lunch in the future - it must be really interesting to dine-on! 😀. Prices looked reasonable to the grand offerings and large size. @FoodFiend our big culantro plant is still alive. Trying to fertilize more, and it seems to be making a comeback. Have planted yellow squash and zucchini....so easy! Only we have to hand pollinate, but it's fun and they grow pretty big.

The stuffed bitter melon with black bean sauce looked really ono! It amazes me how folks continue to create local fusion dishes. That looked like something i'd opt for when i can't decide between plate lunch or strong ethnic flavors 👍. A cardboard box tray is always a plus with saucy/soupy take out. How many times i've had to drive with one hand on the wheel and the other holding my take out so the contents don't spill out into the bag but then still have to pour spillage back into the container upon reaching home 😆.

Hi Misty 😁Long time! Wow, that's some gigantic bittermelon or aunty really stuffed the hell out of it haha. I do admit that I like tartar sauce with my fried mahi and I'm glad you tasted the mac salad even tho not your fav -- but that one definitely wasn't the plain old macaroni maynaise kine. Greens was super fresh -- no wiltyness there and free. I love chili frank, but gotta be certain kine brand hotdogs (won't say da names because u know (not sponsored) 🤣Appreciate the care aunty takes in preparing these dishes and your honest review. Must say I could tell u were extremely happy with his place and the price! Anyway, miss YT-chattin witchu : ) Been frickin busy at work with not much time for a "real life", but letting u know that I'm still alive lol Take care girl \ nnn/

I tried to go there and they were closed. 😡 Was looking forward to it because the standard plate lunches were getting old which pretty much everywhere had the same offerings and pretty much tastes the same. And as with everything else it's they're not worth it anymore. I like going to holes in the wall but so tired of the standard plate lunches.
