I don't live in Hawaii, but I want to compliment you on the comprehensive videos you produce. From the location, the description of the food--taste, texture, price, personal feeling about the food--I am impressed with how complete your videos, in general, are. When you describe a food, I can imagine exactly what you mean. Your talent at expressing what you're eating is top notch, imho. Thanks for your content. Excellent! I also like that you talk about it in your car because it's much easier to hear you and understand. When you're in a restaurant with music blaring, it's a little difficult for a senior like me to hear!!

Lauren, thank you for your thoughtful comment. It makes me so happy that I can convey and describe the tastes and feelings to you of the food. I'm glad you enjoy and understand what I'm trying to do. I totally hear you on the loud restaurants. I've been doing my showcases mostly in my car and I agree it's quiet and no bugs. But some people wanted to see the restaurant experience so once in a while I go inside. I actually prefer to do the filming in the car myself. I hope you understand. Thanks so much for watching!

Oh I'd also like to add, if you can't hear in certain restaurants I do have closed captioning in English and different languages. It is usually up right away, but that version is automated by KZfaq and the grammar and spelling is wrong - especially for the Hawaiian names. It usually takes me the next day after the video goes up to edit it and convert it to different languages. I only bring this up because we recorded something in another loud restaurant yesterday. It may be helpful for these restaurant videos if you can't understand what we are saying.

The rice cake from Kin Sing Restaurant in Waipahu is the closest thing to what I remember eating during my childhood in the 1960s. They're so light and fluffy. Our manapua man used to come around Eluwene Street in Kalihi, clanging his bell and carrying manapua in large metal cans at each end of a wooden pole.

Hey, you were in my neck of woods-EB. There's usually 2 trucks there on N. Road but the one you went to is the one I go to if I have a nostalgic urge for noodles and chicken. Back in the day, I'm talkin 1985 ish and beyond, multiple manapua trucks/vans would get to park right along "O" building. When lunch came around and the cafe menu wasn't appetizing we'd go to the trucks and for $0.50 get a large bag of noodles and 2 pork hash ($0.25 each). Not bad for a $1. Too bad the old Kamsco dive isn't around. It used to be right across from Ilima intermediate school. The sauce in the burger was to die for. And the french fries...way better than McD. It's not a truck but since you were in EB I thought about them.🤙🏼

I still have great memories of chasing the-ringing-of-the-bell of the “Manapua Man,” announcing his arrival, during his rounds around Palama Street and Vineyard Blvd. In the past, manapua vendors used to source their manapua from a Chinese bakery located on Maunakea Street where Bo Wah Conpany is located - long gone. These days, I chase the taco trucks - LOL. Hope you got some great treats for Aiden during your production of this vlog. Keep-up the great production of the vlog! This was SUCH a great video! Your channel takes me down food-memory lane. This reminded me of when after regular school i used to go to japanese school in nuuanu. Us keeds would cross the street and from a literal hole in the wall i’d buy fried noodles from an old japanese lady. Yup, no such thing as “customer service” as she was grouchy and mean but now i know the lady was just tired and hot. Those noodles though, that came with maybe one piece of cabbage and an even smaller piece of “pork” (straight up fat/gristle) was ambrosia at that small kid time. I savored every bite as i ate the noodles one by one. You’ve also mentioned in other videos about how during a field trip you’d get a frozen can of juice wrapped in tin foil. That’s totally how it was 😆👊, nevah had hydro kine flask technologies then. And yes to strawberry diamond head soda! Great video as it not only showcases these hardworking folks but it paints a picture of what it was like to grow up in the 70’s-ish on oahu 👍🤙🌈!

Aw thanks for sharing your memories. Similar to mine and everyone else's. Some people just grouches. 🤣 and yes to the aluminum foil. Nowadays these kids are spoiled with Yetis and Hydroflasks. We didn't even bring water to school. Just drink from the warm nasty water fountain or hot hose water. 🤣

@@FoodFiend Lol i was just talking to my childhood best friend about how no one ever talked about staying “hydrated” back in the day. Drinking water at school meant standing in line when the PE teacher told you to and you had your 10 second turn to drink warm water from the fountain! Later the school put in those “fancy” chilled water fountains and it was like “Hoh! We movin’ on up!”. Like my grandpa from maui used tell me “Jus drink pipe watah!” which meant from the tap or hose pipe if we were outside....was good enough and i don’t think i have any ailments from it 😆👌!

We want to find the manapua man now!! This was great Misty for sharing the various manapua trucks and what each had to offer. The noodles in the plastic bag is how some food vendors package food in the Philippines so it was cool to see that in Hawai’i. Really liked the hot dog in the manapua bun. That’s like kolaches that we have here in Texas!! Mahalo for always sharing the great eats!! 🤙🏽🙌🏽😋👍🏽

Hi Michelle and Jose! Yes it's a big part of the old culture here. I think the closest one to Waikiki is the one in Kaka'ako near the park. He has no signs and it's a grey step van. But once you see the side you can view the food. I hope you get to try it some day. Have a great weekend!

We’ll check him out but definitely thinking we’ll check out the one in Nanakuli since we’ll be over in Kapolei to check out Broke Da Mouth after your review and then Sean’s review 😋!! Sooo many places to eat from but so little stomach space!! 🤣 Have a great rest of your weekend!!🤙🏽

Howzit! So I'm really late to this discussion...but one of my favorite manapua is Kalua pig filled! However, it's increasingly difficult to find today. Char siu is great, but back in small kid time, there was a small store across from Punahou School that sold a manapua that had a filling that was more savory and less sweet than most char siu. Wasn't all red with dyes, just yummy! And then, why is it that no one makes one with pork hash filling? Most restaurants that make manapua also make pork hash, so...? 2 cents...
@FoodFiend
@FoodFiend Ай бұрын
Hi Gen! Yeah I like kalua pig filled manapuas. The curry ones aren't bad either. Having a pork hash one is a great idea. I think I'd like those more as it is the filling that isn't exactly my favorite because of the sweetness.

Sounds like you left Hawaii for sometime and then came back showcasing local staples 🤷🏽‍♂️ My question is what kine of culinary background you have?
@FoodFiend
@FoodFiend Жыл бұрын
Nope. Born and raised here. Left for college to the mainland for 4 years and came back and been here since. I can turn my local accent on or off. I prefer to speak without pigeon so others can understand. I have no culinary background besides cooking at home since I was a kid. My mother was in the culinary industry and I watched my grandma cook as a kid. I'm just a normal person who likes to eat and share what I like and promote local businesses while at it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I actually really liked the first one's chicken and won ton. The noodles were ok. The PC one I only liked his pork hash. But these two trucks actually sell out most days and are very popular with online posts. So it's a matter of taste. The best one out of the 4 was Le's in Nanakuli.
