I'm fortunate to call Deborah a friend because she is one of the most inspiring people I know. Life dealt her a nasty blow with a severe brain injury, but she has thrived in spite of it. She discovered that living in a van was ideal for her limitations and it turned around and extended the length and quality of her life.

I think Bob might be a living Saint. What a special man. It's a shame... as surprisingly large as this community is, it is still such a small segment of the population. I think if a broader audience knew what Bob is out there doing for so many people, from so many walks of life, I think he would be able to help even more people. He's truly inspirational. He does so much and he's so practical and humble about it all. Thank you, Bob!

I'm inspired to hear that there is a strong and helpful community out there. I am also inspired to know that you can build your van over time as you live in it and it doesn't have to be over-engineered. My favorite part is how you did the insulation, which is not only easy to create and install but also easy to check for mold and replace as well.

Just awesome that Deborah was able to find a vehicle that worked, friends and support in a community that is helping to build alternate options for living. As someone that travels for work on a budget and is seeing more and more greedy real estate hiking the cost of houses, apartments, condos to share I can appreciate people looking for a way to live with dignity and independence and have the option to do so.

To both of you why do you think she was not enjoying her life without the money? And why do you always assume it's mental health issues?! We have a local man, he is extremely well off and is mentally healthy! He walks all over town, picking up trash everywhere and lives in a tent behind one of our major stores by choice! He is a highly educated man and lost the love of his life and decided to set out and find community! He enjoys living off the land and meeting many different people!

I agree, it sounds like a myth. Every city has one of those stories. Generally it’s not true. And if it was, it goes without saying it would be mental illness. People don’t live outside on a bench if they are mentally well. Common sense would tell u that. I was homeless for a long time. I saw it all.

I,too, am going through the agony of downsizing. I have gotten most of my stuff from my storage unit and have so many boxes and “stuff” crammed into my 1-bedroom apartment, that my cat thinks she has her own jungle. I have plenty to do this Winter in Tennessee to keep me and my cat entertained. It is hardest to part with so many items having an emotional impact in my life, but to get to one goal, you have to make hard decisions. Good luck to all who are MOVING ON in your life for whatever the need.

This video was one of the first I watched last year (2017) as I was seriously contemplating this life style. I never forgot Debra. Now I have a van and am beginning to get it ready! (yea! I'm insulated!) I am so glad I came back to watch this and to be inspired by the simplicity. I have been complicating things because after watching hundreds more I got caught up in these van build perfectionist's bells and whistles and forgot about the basics. That mentality is holding me back from getting out of "Dodge." Thank you Bob and Debra for this re-run and reality check for the push toward freedom.. once again.

I love love love Deborah. Such an inspiration! I can hardly wait to get on the road. I am a domestic violence SURVIVOR and Im going otr full time as a way of healing and not only physically but emotionally and spiritually. I fled with basically the clothes on my back and my lil truck. But im saving money and working out how i will support myself. I love to Crochet and any kind of crafts so im thinking I will start a channel to teach crochet...but Im so serious that i already have a box that when i see something i could use in my van that i havent even found yet...lol...it goes in there. My goal is to be otr in one year. I live my life AS IF. That means I live as if its already here if that makes any since. Deborah gives me such hope and inspiration. Thank you for all your wonderful videos Bob. I will definately be seeing everyone sometime in the future!!!

Thank you for looking out for me gary gary. I don't think it shows very well in the video (if at all), but the heater hangs underneath a huge steel plate. It is nowhere near fabric. That steel plate was part of the wall and door partition that was installed between the cab and the cargo area. And for what it's worth, I no longer have to hang it from the ceiling. It was necessary for me to do that because of my littlest dog, Bentley. He had a fuzzy tail that was a perfect height to go right into the open flame. Believe me, hanging the heater was the safest option. And now, well, it can sit on the floor but I'd give anything to have my Bentley-poo back. :(( Thanks again, d&n My KZfaq channel - kzfaq.info

How can you live in an RV or such and still receive your SSD benefits? I thought one has to have a physical address, as well as a mailing address that is permanent, and in one State only? And please, I mean no offense. I think that this way of living can be freeing. I couldn't do this however due to my physical needs of my disabilities. plus i work part time from my home in customer service, and you cannot use WiFi nor Satellite for the internet. Otherwise i might try that way of life. Aah, but one can watch your videos, and daydream. Lord bless.

What about cell phone, like verizon for internet? Many areas with cheap open land the rents are also cheaper since the land is cheap and can't be hoarded. for example Bismark ND.
@Singing4Jesus777
@Singing4Jesus777 7 жыл бұрын
First the phone line has to be a Land Line. Second the internet has to be where you can plug in your PC directly into the Modem. Verizon is still like WiFi or Satellite. It's through the air signal. For my job it cannot be that way. It has to be through a DSL internet access, or cable. And hard connected to PC. Otherwise it isn't secure for Customers private information. I have to log into work in a secure internet access. They can tell what your systems are.

What an incredible simplistic conversion which meets the needs of Deborah. I love the stories I hear about community and how people come together to help each other! I have seen so many van conversion videos from super simple to very elaborate. To me it seems the more simplistic the more functional it appears to be. Thanks Bob for sharing another wonderful story! I have a question. From what I have seen these people are completely off the grid and, it looked like they are in the desert. How are they able to get on the internet? Also, how are they able to stay on land for free? I love the idea and have done my share of camping out but, always had to stay in campgrounds. I would really like to know more about this gypsy style of life. I would appreciate it if someone would be so kind as to share this information with me. Wishing you all the very best of life and happiness.

I'm not on the road yet, it's a future plan of mine. However I know you can stay for 2 weeks at any state or federal park, also BLM federal land. Truck stops is a good option on the road and always have nice clean showers. There s are some apps in which you can get information on where you can park. Of course campgrounds always have hookups but I think "boondocking" is the best way to go.
