that's what dark squares are i guess but unlike dark squares, you can unlock the square back by capturing grey pieces

nope those are dead pawns that's what pieces turn into in variants upon their king being checkmated/captured

The gray pawns are "dead", they can't move, you can't move through them, anyone can take them.

A check on the black king is an irreversible change in the game, so presumably the 50 move counter would reset at each check. Now we need a position where someone can force a check every 49 moves.

99 checks rule makes the perpetual involving black King being checked a win for white instead of a draw.

To summarise: In 2 player chess variants, pieces turn grey upon their king being checkmated/captured. These aren't called grey pieces, they're DEAD pieces according to chess' variant position editor. To give a few examples, a dead Bishop would be "dB" and a dead Alfil would be "dI" in the position editor

Pieces can still move there and take them, but pieces cannot be placed there because a piece is there already.... sort of.

As someone who messed a lot with the varient editor, gray or extra dark colored pieces are "dead". They dont move and can be captured by anyone. They are mostly used for some of the varients that use a point system to win, or in four play chess when one of the players gets checkmated (all their pieces become dead). In this scenario they are just used to temporarily block pieces from moving through that square. (Weird use imo)

I assumed that the grey pawns were pieces you could no pass or capture like the duck in Duck Chess.

That's what the black squares on h2 and h6 are for. The grey pawns serve a similar purpose, by preventing pieces from being placed there during setup, but pieces can still move there by capturing them during the game.

New accounts and new players are always 1500. I'm 700 blitz and ~1600 "king of the hill". Simp's opponent probably won against another newbie before getting paired against Simp.

This is the most stupid gamemode I've seen, it's unrealistic to expect a game to end after 99 checks because a checkmate or a draw is much more likely to occur in between. I'd guess at least 99% of the games in this mode never see the 99th check...

fxe5 has a discovered check from the Bishop on a8, so white can't move the queen and the pawn would take it on the next turn.

Either you take the pawn, in which case simp forks the queen and King with a bishop; or you don't take the pawn, in which case simp moves the pawn one forward, generating mate by discovered check.
