I needed to get this information so that I could pass it along to Comp Cams. They needed it to help set me up with the proper valve springs and retainers.
I thought this would be good information for those that needed it. If you're going to 'blueprint' an engine, you're going to need to be able to get this information.
As stated in the video, there is a special tool for this, but this method will work just fine.

Lay a long straight edge across the tops of all the valve stems. On my heads, they weren't all the same. The valve stems were obviously all the same, but some of the valve grinds were deeper than others. That varied as much as .020" to .030". That was from a highly reputable head prep company. I stayed with stock valves, springs, and retainers and an "E" cam. Pedestal roller rockers had to be shimmed. No problems after 6,000 miles and quite a few spirited accelerations. Just for reference, 284 RWHP with 4.11 gears in a '66 Mustang coupe.

If you pull valves out be very careful the top of the valve steam on a good used engine will actually slightly mushroom. So if you let the valve drop but it gets stuck lift it back up and take some light sand paper and rub it around the top so you don't score the valve guides with the valve. Do not force the valve out.

Hi Eric, wanted replace valve springs on my A20A honda. Having to replace head gasket so whilst out I thought why not? But I'm struggling to find same but new valves, not available anywhere. So I was wondering using this measurement would I be able to order in new springs, based on size rather than part code? Or do I require additional information? Thanks

You can't measure accurately if your probe comes in at an angle. You loose a few digits. I'd get one of those adjustable vertical (for holes) parallels) those are cheap. You put it in the right place, you adjust it to size, then, remove it, and measure it, instead of the hole. Like with bore gauges.

It's got a hole in the middle, so you're just pushing the ring and spring.. and those things are pushed all the time as valves are opening and closing.. so you should be fine.

You need to take into account that not measuring perfectly perpendicular gives a shifted reading. The difference is not much and when you measured in inches, you rounded off quite a bit so your numbers are probably correct. But when you went to millimeters, you got down to a resolution of 0.05mm. Which is expressing your approximation too accurately. A better way to measure this would be using a transfer gauge, which is not terribly expensive
@greg6925
@greg6925 3 жыл бұрын
Its hard to see how your holding the straight edge perfectly level up underneath the valve and getting a micro reading at the same time. It looks difficult. Nice video

How often do you just look at the valve springs and be like yeah I need new valve springs. Yes I could measure the depth of the tread of the tire but 90% of the times you can just look at it and say yeah I need new tires you might want to take a measurement if you're trying to sell the job. I can look at brake pads. I could measure the thickness of the brake pads but if they're thin and it's my truck I'm just going to replace them. Does this thinking hold true when it comes to valve springs. I'm not yet done my first valve spring job.

I honestly don't know how you do it, using metric imperial measurements. I was trying to measure an imperial nipple earlier on but couldn't figure out how to convert from metric imperial to imperial imperial (the one with fractions). It came out as something like 149/400ths.
@krtwood
@krtwood 7 жыл бұрын
You just eventually recognize the decimal version of the major fractions, and if it's in between you play around with 32nds or 64ths until you get there. 149/400ths is .3725. 3/8ths is .375, which is one that you just know.
@JimGriffOne

1-7/8 would be 1.875, so I bet that's probably considered the nominal spring height. (Or, perhaps, with a 2" spring that has a 1/8" compression.) Likewise, 1-7/16 is 1.438 and 1-5/8 is 1.625.... So, I would also bet that the spring seat is a nominal size of 1-7/16 with a spring wire size of 3/16. Or maybe just "1-7/16 by 1-5/8". I wonder if Ferd uses fractional sizes when designing or describing these parts? They certainly do with the pistons...

I dont know how critical the measurement is, but the keepers were not seated correctly because of lack of spring pressure, the height would be a bit off. Perhaps a small two arm puller could be used to pull the disk up and force the keepers tight. If im talking crap, im sorry.

Hey Eric, my buddy asked me if i could change a water pump for him on a 2005 5.7 hemi. The car was idle for about 4 yrs. When he brought it over i noticed the dipstick looked like it was burnt, it had lots of rust in the radiator and rust in the spark plugs. I was concerned because the water reservoir was boiling over. He assured me all it needed was a new water pump so i replaced it. The next day i baked it out of my garage left it running for about 5 min while i closed the g door, when i came out the engine was knocking. Took it to a shop they say it was extreme over heating. How can it overheat with a brand new water pump?

Thank you for your answer! I was just wondering because I saw a guy on youtube replace his battrey with a set of 12 volt compassorters. I was under the impression that if you ran your car without a battrey that it would burn the alternator up are it would just plan out shorten the life of the Alternator.
@samruba7441
@samruba7441 7 жыл бұрын
Well in his case the capacitors were acting as his battery because capacitors store electricity. The alternator can easily handle the cars electrical load. The battery is really only used for starting the car and running in accessory mode

Thanks for the reply Eric, I guess it's all in the edit. If someone ordered their performance parts, and then reconned the heads, with the possibility of cracked seats needing inserting and cutting in or putting in hardened seats for unleaded fuel, they would get a surprise when their measured maximum spring length magically changed!

VW, Ford, Chevy and Toyota have achieved production cars that have lasted way over 1 million miles for the average customer (in somewhat rare cases), one reaching 1.8 million IIRC but I can't remember who it was. Diesel engines can easily last much longer than a gas but I don't know why as I'm not an expert on diesel.
