The pots that you buy die so quickly because every little stalk is a whole plant. They sow lots of seeds so they grow quickly and can be sold quickly, but the soil/pebbles they’re in doesn’t have enough nutrients to support that many plants. If you want to grow those, you need to break the clump of plants apart and plant one or two of them into a different pot with proper soil. Or get Ebbers to do it for you.

@@SortedFood For the next one of these, you should try and find a gift box or something of different honeys. Just like with the olive oil, honey can have wildly different flavours. I currently have a small thing of honey that I got for my tea and oh my it tastes way different than any honey that I have had. It is very floral, and citrusy, with it just being straight honey. The different flowers that bees get their pollen from give different backgrounds to the honey.

@Evi1 M4chine hydro is way more convenient than earth though. The point is that outside is also made of rain and stable nutrients, which you don't have indoors if you don't put effort in. For the vinaigrier, you’re definitely paying for the beautiful crockery. You can make vinegar in a plain old mason jar with cheesecloth. The vinegar has a use I'm surprised didn't get mentioned - making it with different fruits as it is being created and you have essentially the original gatorade/soda. The fruited vinegar, sometimes mixed with some brown sugar or molasses and ice water (back in the day, usually just kept in a cold creek near where you were working in the fields and the jug it would be sealed in would be lovely and cold when wanted) and taken out into the fields or by the barn when a ton of work was expected to go on. Sounds gross, perhaps, but next time you get a chance, get a bottle of something like white balsamic or even a really good quality cider and give it a sip. Adding a bit of sugar and water creates a lovely sweet(ish) drink that is far more refreshing than even just plain cold water in miserably hot weather. You know that kinda gross feeling you get when you overheat where there is almost a bad taste in your mouth from being dehydrated and things taste off? The vinegar cuts thru that and helps you drink more liquids than trying to just gulp down water. Can also help settle your stomach when overheated and if you decide to drink it when you are just not feeling great, a pinch of salt help cross it from 'pleasant drink' to 'use when sick like you would pedialite or gatorade. Use just a trace of sweetener for a light drink, but hell, I've had it when people make it near Kool-Aid strength! ANY natural sweetener - raw honey, molasses, sugar, even fruit juice concentrates. No clue about artificial sugars, I stay away from those personally, but try what you like. Oh... and Ebbers? Should you read this - yes. A nice splash of ice cold gin, some of a fruity vinegar and a bit of ice makes a lovely summer cocktail at the end of the day. Just so it's said!

Don't use alcohol with too high of a proof to make the vinegar or the alcohol will eat the cork. I believe it is at 45% or 55% alcohol when it becomes a problem.(for whiskey storage just tip the bottle upside down to lightly wet the cork every 2 months or so.

@Evi1 M4chine Hi :), just wanted to say I respect your point of view and understand some of your points. Christmas is just a really big holiday in the Philippines a time for massive celebrations and get togethers, even when you have little you can just go to your neighbours and friends and join the festivities (not to mention we’re very much a majority Catholic country). I think culturally the countdown to Christmas just gives everyone a good feeling of joy and togetherness especially in hard times. So I slightly disagree with your point about clothing stores selling stuff out of season as being the same/similar concept because its more about the emotional attachment, sentimentality and religious aspects of Christmas rather than a product marketed/sold if that makes sense?

The nice thing about a vinaigrier is : you can just use the half glass of wine that’s a bit turned, the cheap cooking wine that you opened for a recipe that you don’t want to drink the rest of, … my grandmother used to put crushed overripe grapes in it from the family vineyard. Basically every household had one in the countryside, gifted for weddings or passed down to children.

Having fewer plants in one pot works way better when you are growing them from the supermarket bunches yourselves. This summer I have grown the leftovers of my mum's supermarket basil. One pot of plants died to the cold, one died to bugs that come from a cucumber plant. The first set of cuttings is now a nice small flowering plant (30cm ish) by the tomatoes. Only one plant I took from a cutting is thriving. It now is a fully grown plant with two main stems of >60cm with a bushy underbelly (to get that you need to prune the plant). I am watering it twice a week by having a bottle with slits sawn into the twisty top sitting in the pot upside down.

So here are my thoughts : Olive oil: seems like a pretty nice gift, good olive oils can be expensive so I feel like the price is fine for what it is. But it wouldn't be for me, I can't differentiate olive. (but it might be a way for me to do it, but I'm sure I couldn't make the difference) great for people who can make the difference and/or care about olive oils Herbs: nice but way too expensive. Just buy a pot of herbs and don't do like Jamie and forget to water it and you'll have herbs forever for a low low price (the soil to repot the herbs is probably the most expensive part) Cocktails: pretty neat, decent price considering they seem to be fairly high quality cocktails, judging by all the positive reactions everyone gave. It's no worse than ordering those cocktails in a pub or restaurant, except it's on the go or at home, without needing to mix it yourself. But it would be interesting to know if they sell, say, a 4 or 6 pack of one or the other, if there's one I really like more than the rest. Vinaigrier: fairly high price, and that's without taking into account the cost of the cider/wine/other that you turn into vinegar. But like olive oils, good vinegars can be in the fairly expensive side of things, and since you can infuse it with whatever you want, and probably let it age longer to let it develop more aromas or flavour (I would assume?) I'd be curious to make a price comparison, by volume, with a store bought aromatic vinegar, because despite the high cost of the thing + ingredients, it might still be cheaper, and it's a nice DIY "project" with literally zero efforts.

Hi Red, I think it's worth replying to your comment as I can understand why at first look you may feel that way. I started as a maker/crafter in my back garden, which loosely worked for a year or so. As soon as I tried to produce something that might sell beyond Bury St Edmunds farmers market, I ran into several issues the first was legislation, obtaining organic/vegan certification is an impressively expensive activity. The second big one is taking on staff and paying them a real living wage that isn't an out and out embarrassment to everyone involved in the project. Finally you need to remember that the independent store holders that stock our goods need to do the same for there staff, while also paying the rent and exorbitant rates not to mention corporation tax that anyone who isn't the multinational corporations that run our planet have to pay. Quite quickly as a small maker / crafter those percentage points disappear into the either. Please bear that in mind next time you go to a market, look at something made by a craftsmen and mistakenly think "I could knock that out for a couple of quid", please, please don't say that in front of them. I'm sure what you said is meant well but genuinely I would encourage you to try setting up an eco business and see how hard it is.

@@IMPERITOR100 I already replied above but whilst these factors all explain why they are priced as they are, the price is (for a lot of people in the comment section) still too high for the product received. Just because I might know stuff is biodegradable and handmade etc doesn't change the fact I can't afford to pay it and there's cheaper alternatives. But I mean as I said above I guess it depends what you consider your target market to be and I would guess people who are well off. Even then, I'm going to assume Jamie isn't too bad financially and even he considered it pricey so it isn't just me not earning enough.

The the vinaigrier sounds awesome, id still want to know how to make just normal white vinegar but for flavored stuff that sounds awesome. Other than sourcing the mother vinegar this seems cool. Even if someone doesnt use it for vinegar it is still a decorative pot with a spigot
@Emeraldwitch30
@Emeraldwitch30 Жыл бұрын
White vinegar is a distilled vinegar. They kinda take the flavor out. But you could just use a nice white wine and add the raw apple cider vinegar for the mother. I just use those big glass gallon jars from food service (if you know any friends who work in restaurants ask if they have pickle/olive/relish jars they toss out) Tie a clean cloth over top to keep bugs/dust out and let it sit in cool dark spot. The fancy jar is lovely and probably makes decanting easier than me and my ladle and jar but thats a lot of cash 💸

So good of the guys to put I that kind of time to our kits. Especially when you bear in mind all of this was off their own backs. The first I knew about this was driving back from the NEC and getting 7 or 8 emails from Americans saying they had been to the website.....why do we not ship to the USA. A small investigation later and suddenly we are youtube famous. Okay so maybe no golden ticket although we do have some more USPs and a lotta love in our kits, still the guys have been very good.

In NZ, we have something similar to the hydro herb kit, with soil tablets and little packets of seeds (usually for herbs, but can also come as a starter for bigger veges). Plus these are given away by supermarkets in spring - spend $20, get 1 set, to get people into growing their own food and get into gardening :-)

I once tried to make Apple Cider, from scratch (as in crush a heap of apples, add some sugar and water and use the natural yeast on the apples to do the fermentation). It didn't go exactly to plan, but I did end up with about 10L of the best apple cider vinegar I've ever had (still have 1/2 dozen bottles in the cellar years later).

We have used a bottle glass cutter and made hydro herb container. With the small dirt pods (10 for $5) and simple strips of cotton cloth as water wicks ($1) we made 10 for $6. Miracle Grow liquid fertilizer we already had and the 6 ounce bottle was $5 a year ago. Lots of people around where we live sell vinegar/kombucha crocks. We use them for homemade kombucha.
