This place is right on the beach with the beautiful gulf and sea air, but there are some things to keep in mind before booking it. We have adopted a phrase that we use whenever staying in Mexico, because it is considered a third world country, and lots of things are not the same as in the U.S. This phrase is, 'It's Mexico.' It is an all-encompassing term that we find ourselves using a lot when things don't work right. We used it quite a bit during our stay here, as you'll see. Enjoy!

My husband and I hear you. No electricity, wifi, water pressure, drinking water, flushing toilets. We live in Yucatan too. And stuck without transport during bad weather, ugh. Chelem is charming, flamingos, warm gulf water. I hope you are out of there before the rains come next week, we live in Merida and can pretty much count on no electric for hours. I have a hand crank solar powered radio that I can use to power up my cell phone and we have lots of solar powered emergency lights. Bless you guys for roughing it during the retired years.

Yeah, it was a bummer, but the area had a rustic charm with beautiful simplicity. Wow! You're expecting power outages in Mérida? You win for using a hand-powered 'generator' for the necessities! Solar is definitely the way to go. We're hoping we can avoid 'roughing it' in the near future. We've moved to Playa del Carmen for now. Thanks for the moral support! :)

First off, we LOVE your channel name!...but you are definitely not geezers yet, lol. We are so sorry to hear of all of the difficulties, but wow, what an amazing location. Living in less developed countries definitely has its drawbacks, but also makes for some amazing stories! Subscribed.

Thanks! Lol - yeah, we know we're not really 'geezer' age yet, but we still gotta laugh at ourselves! :D Yes, we feel the same way - the more adventurous the journey, the more amazing and unique the memories. I suppose in our 'geezerness,' we're less interested in so many challenges just to have the basics, at least when we're paying for them. So glad you enjoyed! We've enjoyed your channel as well. :)

Tuk Tuk's are available if you don't want to walk or carry things. Stable wifi and power in Progreso or east of Progreso

Yes, we saw Tuk Tuks around, and we used one once, but mostly they weren't available when and where we needed them. When we saw one available, it was near the center of town, or on a main road. It's nice to hear that the wifi and power is stable in Progreso, but since our stay was in Chelem, that didn't help us. :)

Thank you guys for the videos. I was wondering if that place had lost power too after the storm. I’ve been here 4 years and that was the longest power outage we’ve had. I saw you walk back a few times and said good morning, but I didn’t think to ask if you to were without power. It was a bit rustic for a few days, but that’s life sometimes. I believe you described Chelem/Progreso just the way it is warts and all. For me that’s the charm of living here. Can’t wait to see more of the world through you.

You're welcome! Yeah, it was a little rough. We don't recognize you from the photo. Were you in the building behind ours? The one with the beautiful mastiff? So glad you feel we got it right; we like to keep it real. It's definitely a special place with good people. Happy you'll be enjoying this journey with us!

On the “Chelem- A taste of the Yucatán” video, from 1:04 to 1:10 your drone shot catches you walking in front of our house. The house is on your right as you walk by.

Okay...I just found your channel. I live in Progreso and am gonna save most of my comments until I've watched a couple of more of your videos, then I'll likely come back to this one to comment more. Any of us who've been here longer than a week or so know that the services in Chelem and Chuburna aren't reliable. And Mexico is a developing country, not a third world country - Anne

.Great video . All the way from Ireland . Which is the nicest place to visit if you ranked them ? Chelem, Celestún or Chicxulub or progresso . I’m booked for a 2 week trip and would like to spend a week in 2 of the beach towns . I’ve my wife , 7 month baby and mother in law with me !

Thanks! We love Ireland! Well, we've only stayed in Chelem, and have visited Progreso. It depends on what is important to you during your vacation. If you don't want to worry about electricity, stay in a larger city with better infrastructure, so you have fewer blackouts. I've heard that there are some nicer places just to the east end of Progreso, but they may have fewer transport options, possibly similar to our stay in Chelem? Obviously, the closer you are in the center of town, the better the transportation, but it can get a bit noisy with vehicles, or if there are bars and restaurants nearby. As always, it's a trade off, right? Reading reviews is probably your best chance to find what's important to you. Good luck and enjoy!

Yes, unfortunately we've had numerous experiences in Mexico with unreliable services, whether it's transportation, or utility infrastructure. We endearingly refer to it by saying, 'It's Mexico,' because there's really not much we can do about it. 😉 We've come to expect certain challenges in various countries as we travel. 🤷‍♀️
