Also I knitted the jumper! It’s my first proper knitted garment, the right sleeve is smaller than the left (I decided to switch knitting techniques between the two) but it isn't super noticeable 😅

Cool knit! Can't tell the difference between sleeves - we are always more critical of our own makes than other people are. I was told if someone can't see the flaw from a metre away then don't worry about it 🤓 also thank you for this video! I have always been curious about these American sunscreens, tried the Supergoop sunscreens and had the same experience as you. Currently my fav for using under makeup is still the Ultra Violette Supreme Screen, but loving the Korean sunscreen journey I'm on too.

That’s so awesome Michelle! It was initially suggested to me to try knitting for my ADHD and I’ve really been enjoying it. I’ve only knitted a few scarves so far but one day I will attempt to knit more. I’ve found knitting has been helpful with my healing since coming out of hospital with endo, and also helping improve my concentration. I particularly enjoy knitting while travelling as a passenger and in front of the tv. I feel less distracted by my phone and more able to actually follow along with what’s happening in the show! ❤

My favorite use for the Australian Gold tinted sunscreen is as an eyeshadow primer. It doesn't burn at all on my lids like most sunscreens do. And it keeps my eyeshadow locked in place like dream. I do my makeup in the morning and it's still looking fresh at midnight. It does layer over moisturizer really well.

This is interesting! I LOVE the Australian Gold - it's my holy grail, but the eyelids is the one place that it creases. I love that this product does NOT budge/fade and I am so confident that I am protected. It serves as my SPF and my foundation year round.

Love your sunscreen content so much! I'm Kiwi, and so with you being Australian we have similar needs in sunscreen. And actually having a scientist talk about how to protect pale skin so many of us non-natives get skin cancer from here, instead of internet scientists insisting a mixture of gelatine and sand does the job, is really refreshing.

People really like to sh*t on American sunscreens, but personally I think their mineral sunscreens can be really great. I personally also like how a lot of companies, mostly Neutrogena though, managed to stabilize Avobenzone; I just like it when anyone is resourceful with what they have. Not to mention that I really want to try Banana Boat's Light As Air Lotion and Aveeno's Hydrate + Protect Face/Body Lotion for the longest time.

Agreed. I have been wearing American sunscreens everyday for 37 years, all in Arizona and Texas. Great skin at 51. No skin cancers. I love Australian Gold, too. I am trying K sunscreen once it gets here. Best advice anyone can give or take in their youth; wear the sunscreen.
@PandoraBear357

They're ok. If I'd never tried Japanese sunscreens, I would use the Aveeno or Neutrogena happily. Personally, I prefer the Japanese sunscreens partly for texture and finish and partly for the extra pluses and prices. I prefer them to the Korean sunscreens, because some K sunscreens are pretty scent heavy.

Totally agree with you on the Supergoop ones! The Unseen sunscreen just sits on my face, feels heavy/oily at the end of the day while also somehow feeling like it scrapes off throughout the day. I actually like using the Glow Screen to mix with foundation when I like a little less full-coverage look and want an extra SPF bump (but only after putting on a full amount of my Beauty of Joseon/Skin1004 sunscreen). I’d never use it as a sunscreen on its own. I’ve actually tried a bunch of other Supergoop sunscreens (their sunscreen moisturizer, Every Single Face, Mattescreen) and I’ve found that every formulation doesn’t do great under makeup, feels really heavy on the face compared to Korean/Japanese sunscreens so I’m using the Supergoops I bought as body sunscreens since I’m less particular for my body. But sticking 100% with Asian brands for my face. Thanks for all the videos and education you share with us! ❤

I'm from Europe, but even here, I feel like it's hard to find SPFs for oily skin that's also very dehydration-prone (I guess it's the denatured alcohol that makes them feel very uncomfortable on my face when they dry down). I recently bought the Skin1004 Centella SPF, and for the first time, I don't need to use anything hydrating underneath, plus I can actually use the recommended amount without becoming too shiny! I'm so amazed that I bulk-ordered 10 more today😊

I stopped using Korean sunscreens after getting burnt on my face (beauty of joeson) in Europe you have many very good SPFs that are controlled, comfortable and safe to use. I've been using Nivea luminous SPF 50 and believe me it's texture and absorption are as nice as in Korean spfs.
@alucinatiomentis
@alucinatiomentis 7 ай бұрын
@@emiliatokarska I was loyal to the Nivea UV sensitive SPF for years, so I'm sure their other face SPFs are nice as well, but I was using far less than the recommended amount because of (I guess) the alcohol denat. Maybe I'm more sensitive to it than most people because I have rosacea. Plus, when I need to use a separate hydrating product underneath SPFs containing alcohol denat, it gets a bit expensive. I will be using a water-resistant SPF either way on days where I'm mostly outside or will be sweating or swimming😊

I have the Supergoop Unseen sunscreen (Canada, so no Trader Joe's) and I agree, on its own it doesn't feel like it totally sets. What I do like is that it gives a smoothing, primer-like effect under makeup, and because it's totally clear, there is zero risk of a white cast. It's not my perfect sunscreen, but I can totally see why it's so popular.

Also, I don’t like the Unseen sunscreen, though I do like the Glowscreen- but on my body. (Not the body glowscreen version but the face). It gives my skin a nice glow to it.. and sometimes I’ll add a touch over my regular sunscreen on the high points of my face.. but not a lot- you’re right.. it’s wayyyyy too glowy and metallic looking if you use the proper amount. The Benton Air Fit UV Defense sunscreen is also green in color. It’s basically a variant of the popular Beauty of Joseon sunscreen. Going on personal experience, I’m not sure if it’s pigmented enough to make a difference, but notably I do not suffer from redness and naturally have a gold undertone with greenish veins, so maybe it just blends too well on me to tell.

I have a mild chemical sunscreen allergy, so blue lizard is a godsend for me. I do a ton of boating and summer outdoor activities that have me in the Sun for 8+ hours a day. My skin will break out in a rash if I have chemical sunscreen on for more than a couple hours, so fine for a quick hike but not an option for beach days etc. Admittedly, it’s a deeply uncomfortable formula, but it’s literally the best mineral sunscreen out there for spreadability and for dry skin. As an extremely pale person, the white cast isn’t a big deal. I keep makeup wipes on me to clean it off my hands after application, or to clean it off my skin before reapplication if the layer is getting too chalky. I wear UPF gear sometimes if I don’t feel like scraping it off my skin at the end of the day, but sometimes it’s just too hot. I’d love a better solution someday, but for now, I have a reliable way to keep my skin protected!

@@lipstickzombie4981I mean, I’ve had okay experiences with American sunscreens when it comes to sports. I sweat a ton, so the thick and greasy textures stuck to my skin better. Finding everyday sunscreen is a challenge though, I don’t think I really wore sunscreen throughout the day in high school until sports practice. Never got a rash from sunscreen (not immediately at least, sometimes my skin does randomly get little rashes but it could be from other allergens).

I used the Unseen and Trader Joe’s versions a lot (I’m in the US) - I’ve pretty much switched to the TJ’s version though now. The only difference I notice is the TJ’s version has a longer time where it feels like it is sort of rubbing off on your fingers if you touch your face, but I can live with that for 1/3 the price. The Glow Screen I also really like in the winter, even without a full face of makeup (although it works great as a primer) as long as it is powdered down with a mattifying powder. It keeps me from feeling too dry. I do use the full amount for SPF, but the glitter/shimmer on my hands after I tend to have to wipe off on my arms. It is a little tinted though, for sure, so I avoid white or black clothes near my face when I wear it 😂

I love the TJ sunscreen. I bought the unseen sunscreen from supergoop once and loved it, but it's just way too expensive to keep in regular rotation, esp for ONLY 40 spf(!!!!). The TJ is a great dupe, imo. I will grant you that it does feel slippery on the skin, but I personally love the silicone texture. If I have to choose between this and the sticky, slimy, oily horrors of literally every other American sunscreen on the market (chemical or mineral), then I'll choose the silicone texture 10 times out of 10.

Hi Michelle! A quick question for you to answer. If my skin is oily and I dont like the feeling of heaviness on my skin due to layering products in my morning routine, am I doing right not using moisturizer and just wearing my spf? Should I also use a moisturizer? Is it that necessary or the layer of spf (in the case it is quite thick and doesn’t dry me out) is enough to protect the rest of the products to evaporate? Thanks love your content!!

I noticed that I didn't get a tan during the summer I used it. PS I live in an area that the summer days are usually over 38 degree celcius and it's always sunny, no overcast whatsoever.

i love the australian gold sunscreen (its matte-ness is a dream for me) so it's fun to hear your considered opinion on it! i was wondering what you thought of the fact that it only has zinc oxide and titanium oxide at 4% each yet still manages to reach a 50 SPF rating. (a lot of internet chatter suggesting this is not really believable... but dang it, i want to believe it lol!)

Hi @LabMuffinBeautyScience so grateful to have found this gem channel. Could you add your opinion or analysis about nanoparticles in sunscreen in your future videos. I was about to purchase the Heliocare tolerance mineral fluid, but I saw it stated nano for both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Thank you!

I used Blue Lizard way back over 2 decades ago...I think it was Australian back then. The reason it rose in popularity was bc it was one of handful of high spf physical sunscreens that I could use on my babies. Along w California Baby. There were not the choice of physical sunscreens that we have today. Back then, most sunscreens were chemical. Oh, and the bottle was so cool it would turn pink if exposed to UV light and you knew it was time to put on sunscreen. Apparently the Australian Gold was founded by an Australian in Florida. It’s perfect for Florida humidity. 😅

Thanks for the review of these sunscreens. The Supergoop is way to tin-man, even as a primer. The ELF makes a version and believe it or not is better as a primer and if using a matte foundation has worked as a blurring sunscreen. I have been a diehard Japanese/Korean sunscreen user for years. I purchase them online twice a year so I’m stocked up for the year. I prefer mineral sunscreens from America. The Blue Lizard sunscreen is chalky and not good, there are many more mineral sunscreens that are way better. Australian Gold changed their facial sunscreen formula and the new formula isn’t as good. Before it applied much better and didn’t look so matte/patchy.

I hade the same experience with Supergoop Glowscreen. It's very heavy and metallic looking when proper amount is applied and it never ever sets down on me. It also messes up any foundation I put on it. I prefer european SPFs, they work very well for me. ETA: I also hated the Australian Gold so much! I tried the non-tinted version that they had first and it was very very drying, and the tinted was the same, except that the lightest shade was way too dark and orange on me. I have tried many sunscreens and I haven't found any as drying as this one.

In the US with dark skin and sensitive eyes, so I tend to use tinted mineral sunscreens. My current favorites are Live Tinted and Tula, which are both cosmetically very elegant and leave zero white cast on brown skin. Super Goop also has a mineral sunscreen that leaves not much white cast, but it’s not as good as the other two. The Kosas sunscreen is also mineral and cosmetically elegant, but there is way too much shimmer. I think you have used the Paula’s Choice sunscreen before which is mineral and doesn’t leave much white cast, but it too matte for my liking unless I’m wearing it under tinted moisturizer

I love supergoop, it feels so soothing and I love the lack of white cast. I don't feel like it slides around but now I'm worried I'm not putting on enough. 😬 The haru haru one appeals to me so I'll check it out too. No Trader Joe's where I live, sadly.

I love the Trader Joe's sunscreen! It's oh so easy to put on ears, neck, chest, and face - and the price is amazing. I don't feel it is heavy on my dry skin at all. I stopped using it once I found all the new to me Korean sunscreens :-). It *is* hard to get once summer comes, sells out quickly but they do have it in stock. (For those of you in the states who do not have a Trader Joe's near you, Dr. Dray recommended the Kroger "dupes"of the supergoop). OMG, agree with the Australian Gold if you have normal- dry skin. I hated it! But used it on the back of my hands when I was in the office. I never repurchased it, though, b/c it was not good for dry skin :) but I think it's a great product for oiler skin types. Thanks for reviewing American sunscreens! We do indeed have good ones (Unrefined R&R, Black Girl Sunscreen, Naturium, etc) :)

The Blue Lizard is (to my mind) more of a sunscreen to use while doing sports and I assumed the "Australian" quality just meant a dedication to high SPF protection vs. other US sunscreens that used to think SPF 30 was the high standard. I buy it for my kid because the combo of sweat and US chemical sunscreens irritates his skin something awful (I'm looking at YOU, Neutrogena!) Plus he's running around in the pool or the soccer field for hours so the priority is protection, then cost, then cast (and he and my hubby are about your boyfriend's skin tone). My husband also uses it sometimes to go running in the summertime. I bought him the TJ's sunscreen and he hates the slippery texture. Meanwhile, I'm currently using the Haruharu and it's ok. Since it's winter, I feel the stiffer, creamy texture is ok but I'd never use it in a warmer season. Lastly, my mother LOVES the Australian Gold sunscreen because she has very oily skin. Personally, I felt like I had a hard mask on my face when I tried it and I used the untinted on my legs once and could NOT get it off! Now I know I should have used a cleansing oil.

I really enjoyed the Blue Lizard sensitive sunscreen for quite a while, until I received the Consumer Reports issue which reported that it failed its SPF ratings. I forget the exact SPF number (and I am out of state at the moment) but it was effectively like 12 or 17 rather than 30. I have discovered the Korean and Japanese sunscreens and am only using up my old American ones in the meantime.

I've seen at least one US derm and a pediatrician recommend the blue lizard for kids. As the derm and another derm talking about another similar sunscreen said, they are fine with seeing the white cast on their kids and another said the kids might hate it but they could thank them when they are older. The australian gold is popular with a lot of derms as well although one didn't appreciate the kakadu plum that seems to be in all of the formulas.

I really like the matte finish of Australian Gold on my skin. I have combination skin which has started to dry out a bit on my cheeks. I have been trying out Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Natural Sun Cream which has a terrible white cast, so I have mixed the Australian Gold with it and the finish is a little less matte and a bit more comfortable on my drier areas. Is there any harm in doing this and will it lessen the efficacy of my Australian Gold (I use 1/3 of the Korean sun cream to 2/3 Australian Gold)? I live in a hot and humid climate and the Australian Gold does not budge - fantastic product.

At least for me, if I feel like a sunscreen is “fun” like the texture is nice, it smells good, or helps out my skin or has pretty packaging, I’m more likely to use it more often. I think that is the case for a lot of people, but if that’s not the case for you then that’s fine!

I personally usually don't like the so called "exciting" sunscreens; they are usually sunscreens with fancy ingredients for brightening and anti-wrinkle effects, and I hate how that spikes the price point. I like elegant sunscreen textures don't get me wrong, but I have realized this is possible with the most basic and minimal amount of ingredients, so cosmetic companies, Korean or not, adding all of these fancy/exciting ingredients just makes me roll my eyes. That being said, I am always on the lookout for a sunscreen with a green tint and finding one always gets me somewhat excited because of how little green tinted sunscreens are out there.

I've tried the Supergoop Unseen spf 30 as a sample and I like it a lot. BUT now I'm worried that I don't apply enough... I'm oily and I've used it under my makeup where it looked very good, does that mean I didn't use the correct amount? I live in Denmark, where we don't have all of these brands to choose from without blind buying them online, which I can't do cause I have eczema 😒 So when Supergoop came to our Sephora this year, we were so many cheering...

I recently bought the Trader Joe's sunscreen after hearing the hype and panicked a little when I first applied because it felt like a silicone primer. Lo and behold! It sunk in on my skin and felt like next to nothing after a couple minutes. I plays nicely with makeup so far and doesn't irritate me at all (I use Tret). If it's truly a dupe for Super Goop, I can't imagine that one being any better- certainly not enough to warrant the price difference.

I have tried the Trader Joe’s supergoop dupe, the Blue Lizard and the Australian Gold. I have aging normal skin. I like the dupe and wear it when I’m walking in a heavy fog or rain (yes, I walk daily 1-3 hours a day). I would not wear the dupe in the summer unless we are having a particularly dark heavy, low fog day (which we do get in SF in the summer..). Last summer I decided to wear only tinted mineral sunscreen. Of course I had to buy both the tinted and untinted to mix to not look like the criminal ex president! I wore the Australian Gold and the LaRochePosay (US). The LRP was more elegant and comfortable. The AG was super heavy and uncomfortable. Both could be worn around my eyes. BUT they were miseryguts to remove!! I first used an oil cleanser, a balm, and a facial cleanser. My CosRX low ph cleanser, which is typically too drying for me was my only cleanser that would remove it in one go after just the oil. My face absolutely hated me. The AG was significantly more drying than the LRP which I could remove with just the oil and typical not drying facial cleanser. In October I threw away all the mineral sunscreens as I had developed significant hyperpigmentation! (3 TCA peels spread out over last winter did not remove the new spots!). Last winter I only wore Asian chemical sunscreens but had problems with them around my eyes. I watched your video on using a stick sunscreen around your eyes. I ordered the one you recommended but it took a long time to get here so I got the Blue Lizard one. It works great. The Korean one burns my eyes… I did buy the blue lizard body sunscreen (like the one your boyfriend used). My legs are fair and pale but the white caste was significant and never faded. Plus it felt super heavy and uncomfortable. This Summer I tried 4 EU sunscreens and while they aren’t as elegant as the Asian ones I had been using, I GOT NO NEW SPOTS!!! In fact my new Vit C combined with my Korean azelaic and Korean tranexamic acid faded all the new spots I got on the backs of my and most of the old ones! (Also my face ones faded but I can still see them). I am loving my Japanese Nivea sunscreen I’ve been wearing - so light and elegant!

It’s funny that you mention that one of the filters goes away as the sunscreen (Unseen Screen) dries down. I’m an esthetician and one of my coworkers told me he found a 2017 Consumer Reports article with a whole breakdown of advertised vs actual SPF, and it found that the Unseen and Glowscreen were at an actual SPF of 9 or so. We wanted to look if they’ve updated the filters but the current year report was on a paywall.

Isododecane isn't a filter, it's a solvent - it basically replaces water in the formula. But I just checked the 2023 report, and you're right, the Unseen got measured with a lower SPF than the label - wonder if it's because of the whole never-drying-down thing? (Can't see how low the SPF is exactly because the CR format is weird)

So very interesting. I am 56 and have worn sunscreen from my very early 20s Clinique allways talk about the importants of it daily all year around and the consultant would give me the reason why . Back then it was Clinique city block and it was spf15 then over 30 years ago 🤦🏻‍♀️. Feel old 😂. But still today daily where spf50 - allways used Clinique and then went on la Roche posay and Helliocare ( why ) because chemist base and feel I trust them . But open to new products and what stood out in your video Is you describe the product with a icing effect . I put my Clinique bb or Cc or even better glow all with sun creen and it takes me soooo long to blend it . I’ve tried my fingers / sponge / brush 🤦🏻‍♀️ . My skin moderately fair typical dry/combination. From the U.K. but now live in Spain 🥵. Never thought I would need to wear Matt but if today to look at Matt make up . Charlotte Tilbury is the buzz name here so going to look at see . I suppose the main the thing is I am wearing sunscreen . 😊

They started making the Glow Screen in different shades recently and there is actually a lighter/cooler toned one. They're just not available in minis unfortunately. Also people say the e.l.f. whoa glow sunscreen which is supposed to be a glow screen dupe, is less intense with the glow, A lot of reviewers actually like the e.l.f. one better for that reason! I haven't tried those myself, but I've tried the Trader Joe's one after hearing rave reviews but I'm like you... I didn't enjoy applying that amount of primer textured product on my face. It just felt wrong and just slid around. I don't know if I'll ever stop using the Korean gel cream type formulas! I was amazed the first time I used one after only using American ones before.

Hi i recently tried the original round lab chemical sunscreen and it made my skin sting so terribly, I washed it off after 15 minutes. I’m not sure if I am allergic to chemical sunscreens because I use the cosrx aloe sun cream daily and it’s mostly a chemical sunscreen with 1 physical filter. It doesn’t sting at all. Do you think that the haru haru chemical sunscreen might produce stinging on my skin as well? Is there a Korean chemical sunscreen that is safe for sensitive skin? Im trying to find another sunscreen other than the cosrx one because it is a little thick and oily for my liking. Please help it’s much appreciated.
