That's the bad American writing. They didn't worship the State, and the State wasn't the tyranny. They worshipped the Party, and its idealistic official goals, and the Party, including its General Secretary who was the head of the government, was the tyranny.

@hammertapping Yeah, and Khomyuk also didn't exist, and I'm pretty sure Legasov also didn't just shout down Gorbachev for adjurning a meeting. I think the show did a good job dramatizing the events, while remaining truthful where it mattered. It's just an opinion, though. And the fact is, socialist states (not just in the USSR, but in the Eastern Block in general) prosecuted many of their own people for openly stating opinions that opposed the interests of the Party. Many of these countries still work the same way, they're just not so open about it anymore.

Another fun titbit: its not proven but there are widespread reports of otherwise logical and rational people behaving illogically when in extremely radioactive environments. Like he workers looking over the rails when they were explicitly told not to. There are reports of workers feeling dissociated or in a bit of a trance. Now this can be adrenaline, but there have been many speculations if maybe high doses of radiation are capable of directly influencing the brain.

Just couple days ago saw a report about a recent study on effects of cosmic radiation to people in conditions of Moon and Mars. It's possible, that radiation has a direct effect on electric signaling in brain and can affect reasoning and memory. This is besides the well known effect of high energy radiation killing cells.
@AmongRocks

Ott Karu yes, I've seen that one too, it basically gave the mice PTSD and it made them paranoid compered to the control group that had the exact same living standards. And it did not always return to normal when the mice was removed from the high radiation. So going to Mars just became even harder.

I know the shooting of the animals was hard. Painful in the extreme to know and watch. Others have correctly stated in the comments that radiation would spread with the animals. But at the same time with how infected they were. The longer the stayed in the area the worse it would get. Getting shot would be a mercy to save them from a drawn out painful death due to radiation poisoning.

The roof scene was a bit exaggerated to convey a message. A hole in your shoe wasn't an automatic "you're done, comrade" that's symbolic for all the people who risked/lost their lives in the clean-up operations (kinda like the lady scientist is a representation of all the scientists that came to help). Don't get me wrong, what they've shown is exactly how they removed the debris and 90 seconds was exactly how much time they had (if you notice the sequence lasts exactly 90 seconds) but you wouldn't die for a hole in your shoe like that, if you washed your foot immediately after you'd be fine. Many of the liquidator are actually still alive today If anyone's interested in the actual risks of radiation and radioactive dust I suggest checking out a bunch of Thunderf00t's videos on the subject.

There is a scene that was cut from the series but did actually happen, where the soldiers saw that a dog was still alive in the pit as it was being filled with concrete. Nobody had any bullets left and they had to watch as the dog was buried alive! Although true it was decided that it was too upsetting for the final cut. Animals i.e. Bears, Wolves and Birds are now returning to the area in the less radioactive fields and forests. There is a book written by a Pulitzer Prize winning author titled 'Voices of Chernobyl' which are a series of interviews with various survivors including the fireman's wife and the Liquidators. From excerpts I have read it is a true horror story!! Take heart, the final episode is maddening but manageable.

in the scene where they shot the cow. this did happen on multiple occasions. as well as people being shot for refusing to evacuate. the soldiers were ordered to evacuate all the people. if the people refused to leave git rid of them. all animals on farms were to be killed during the liquidation. as well as pets. nobody was allowed to stay. many people were unwilling to leave becuase they didnt know what it was they were fleeing from and they were told to leave during ww2 during the german invasion and many stayed, many believed they had already endured far worse than whatever it was they were being told to run from now. many of the elderly outright refused to leave. those who did leave told the evacuation was temporary. many people believed it was temporary. nobody knew how bad the situation really was. the people were told nothing. they were told over loud speakers they would have soldiers collect them. they were to be evacuated by bus. they were only allowed to take what they could carry on their backs. no pets were allowed. they were given 5 min from the time the soldiers arrived. all who refused to leave were killed.

22:26 Humans were literally dying horrible deaths. I don't think letting dogs die of cancer is better than dying a quick death. No pill is not going to save them and also they were starting to eat each other because there wasn't enough food.

From an interview with the creator and writer of Chernobyl, the miners that were brought in to dig a hole so they can bring in a cooler to prevent fire from melting the floor and spreading the radiation into the water 💧....all of that was just in case it would happen, not that it would. They had a 50/50 chance of that happening so they had to act fast. In the end however, it was unnecessary as the fire and heat never got hot enough to require the coolers to be brought in. So the miners gave up their lives for nothing.

It's not just about the dogs spreading radiation. It's the fact that they don't have anyone to care for them and they'll likely die painful deaths. It's more convenient for the state to just put them down than devote precious money and resources to care for them during their shortened lifespans.

The saddest thing is: it really happened. The women, Ludmila, wrote a book later. This show is based on that book and on the tapes Legasov made at the beginning of the first episode.

I’m enjoying your reactions. This episode was extremely hard to watch (we have rescue doggies in our home so major animal lovers), I think it was good to show the horrible job from a very young man’s perspective who has obviously never shot a gun and loves animals. Watching his shock and horror during the day was enlightening because it shows that the Chernobyl clean up harmed thousands of people both physically and emotionally. He’s drinking vodka liberally at the end and smoking. Probably anything he could do to dull his senses. Next episode is fascinating and I think you’ll enjoy it. It isn’t so emotionally wrenching and it ties back in to the first episode l. Plus the end has real life images of the people involved and what happened to them.

the current stuff going on in Russia is with regards to a nuclear powered missile (powered, not a nuclear bomb) going wrong, not a nuclear power plant, thankfully. At least that's what we know from official channels.

The next episode does a pretty good job at explaining what actually happened to cause the explosion, but if you want a deeper (but still understandable) explanation of how it works (and failed), check out Scott Manley's YT video on it, he does a good job of explaining it thoroughly without requiring a background in nuclear physics.

If you're not checking out the podcast (during car trips or while cleaning or whatever) for these episodes, you really should. It's available everywhere. Spotify, HBO, any podcast app. You learn so much. The context is great. But you also find out what they toned down. I'm glad I didn't get to see that firefighter's bones pull out of his arm when they lifted it or not having enough ammo for a surviving pet but wanting to avoid having it suffocate in the concrete... That shit just...nahhhhh

If you really want to be disturbed, look for eyewittnesses from the hunting. One of them told that they found an animal that was mostly slime, they didn´t know what it was till it meowd Edit: I hope you´ll put the whole endcredits in the next reaction or maybe make an own only for those?

You ladies need to read Midnight in Chernobyl by Adam Higginbotham. An excellent read that goes beyond just Chernobyl and into the history and effects of radiation before and after Chernobyl.

Shooting the animals was bad but think if they were left alone. The pain and suffering they would go through like the guys in the hospital. Rotting and melting with no medical help . Best to shoot them. "Don't let them suffer." It was mercy.

For the dog comments at the end, like episode 3, they turned down the intensity. Many of the animals had similar symptoms to the people. To your other point, the USSR considers pets to be unimportant next to the threat of contamination. They made the choice that was best for the state as they saw from their view what they thought the best choice was. Not enough people in power stepped up because that wasn't the culture. There are people alive today that did this because they had to. It's nuts.

Another beautiful and compassionate reaction. 😍 I felt bad for the animals, but accepted it straight away, so it didn't weird me out too much (the puppies got me though). All those pets suddenly forced to live on their own, trying to find food will have to move around and explore the nature. They carry radiation due to the fact they rummage around on the ground and through plants that is covered in radioactive dust in the fur, and eventhough it might be low radiation, it accumulates and it could be they over time develop damaged DNA which will then be felt in the years to come. The cow, well, it needs to much grass that it has to come from somewhere, and everything is covered in radioactive dust carried away by the wind, and the radioactivity will undoubtedly be absorbed through the food it eats, and the milk and meat will be contaminated. So the old woman would likely get more and more radiation poisoned if she kept using or selling the milk or used/sold the meat sometime down the line when the cow dies due to the rather immence amount of grass and water it needs. Simple circle of life, at some point it all ends up in humans. Tough call, but if we understand the possible reasoning behind it, it is easier to cope with. The dosimeter (static sounds) is used so brilliantly throughout the series, and set off a defence mechanism in me as well, as we know the fast clicking is bad. That and the somber music really enhanced it .. out of scale for me. If I was watching it with someone, I might be reacting it like you.. laughing it off every now and then. 😍 Thank you for that honest reaction, no need to explain or apologize for it. ⚘⚘ You two deserve a big hug after putting yourself through these episodes 🤗
