The writer, director, actor, and producer shares what Marlon Riggs’s work means to her as a Black queer filmmaker, praises Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s radical approach to melodrama, and spotlights Chantal Akerman, Agnès Varda, and other directors whose work she can’t live without.

Shoutout to Philly's own Cheryl Dunye! I was watching the credits to "The Equalizer" tv show and saw her name as the director. I see she's been lots of tv work, but has been able to keep a black lesbian/queer thread involved, including "Claws", "The Fosters", and "Lovecraft Country"! What a wide variety of picks!

This is such a lovely video and yet the amount of dislikes and vicious comments is really heartbreaking. Who are you people? Why are you so intent on spreading hate, on the Criterion Channel of all places? Have you not watched any of the movies they've distributed?
@DiamorphineDeath

A personally hate using, and in this case I should stress using here in a hegemonic sense as it is rampant, but anyways…using film as a mouth piece and vessel for liberalism. The ethics and tenets/dogma of secular humanism being expressed ad nasum to the point where the field itself, especially the avant garde and the experimentally being exclusively apart of said worldview/process of thought. I am incredibly fatigued by it, having to see it stressed in every form across most films. I never see anyone criterion orientated that expresses a radical view that departs from the accepted currents of academia; be it queer theory, poststeucturalism, feminism, Marxism, etc. I’ve never seen anyone featured that took the diametric opposite, as these tenets have become the western dogma, and any deviation or subversion is immediately dangerous, “frightening” and threatening. Which in my understanding as being a book and film/art fanatic, is the whole point of art, especially the avant garde. This stuff is so baseline and normal, while still holding up the mask of perceived transgression as if it’s not being manufactured and created in a world where gap, Levi’s, and target are financing whole sale the ideology itself, and these “artists” are banking off the very system they act as if they’re challenging in any way. So I’m doubtful most “attacks” are coming from a personal and very specific perspective, and in fact they very well could be, I will give you that; but from my perspective, I am tired of being inundated by any ideology and approach to life I do not support, nor see, nor enjoy…that being secular humanism in all it’s manifestations. The material I enjoyed was forced out of the market, and the potential artists and creatives who could express themselves through those views are kept out and not given the ability to create in the same way; so why shouldn’t there be push back? If everything is political; or who was it that said the personal is the political…Adorno? Marcuse? If that statement is true, then this is political and pushing in its own way, can no one push back of us submission ethical liberation now?

@@RealTheZad Who watches Jordan Peterson here dude? The guy espouses classical liberalism, and yet he's become a figure of what...rebellion to you guy's? I gave you a well thought out academic response to your question, and expanded why it is much more complicated and runs deeper than the simplistic "muh human rights" take you had. You're denigrating it down to an absurd level, and presenting it as if it is just that, when it very much isn't. If you can't compete on the intellectual front, you try and degrade and denigrate using logical fallicies by name dropping Jordan Peterson of all people. Try a bit harder bud.

@@DiamorphineDeath @DiamorphineDeath No, you didn't "dude" (not even gonna correct you on that one, I don't want to know what your opinion on trans people are), you created a strawman to epicly destroy in the KZfaq comments. When did I talk about, as you said, "muh human rights" or "attacks"? I complained that people were leaving hate comments every time a queer person appeared on the criterion closet. Not defiantly pushing back against the rampant liberalism or whatever you've diluded yourself into believing is happening here. No, commenting "gross" or "is that a man or a woman". Is this some subversive cry for a break from the accepted currents of academia? No, I think they just have a problem with gay people. And I think you do too.

i swear whenever criterion do a video featuring an obviously queer person it always gets a bunch of dislikes which is a real shame. 46 dislikes within 2 hours for a video of a director talking about movies she loves? come on, compared especially to the tim blake nelson video with 41k views and 12 dislikes.

@@reservoirdude92 they've had hundreds of videos (166, if the playlist is to be believed). Out of those 166 filmmakers, actors etc. I found a grand total of...13 queer people, some of whom are long-time icons of cinema and stage (Nathan Lane, John Waters etc.). Cheryl Dunye is an iconic figure in independent queer cinema and has been a celebrated filmmaker for nearly 30 years. Criterion's whole thing has been releasing or making widely available filmmakers of a diverse background. the company has never wanted to exclusively release films by straight white Americans. the problem here is you: you're a snowflake plain and simple who gets triggered seeing anyone who isn't like you.

@@reservoirdude92 out of the 166 videos in this series, about 14 involve openly queer people. they are not 'pushing it aggressively and obnoxiously', and in fact Criterion are all about a wide array of filmmakers. you're the one with the problem, not them.
