Simp's "most useless piece" or the dark square bishop ended up being in on the checkmate. That piece is now my favorite Chaturanga piece.

The pieces that look different in this variation do so because they were named differently. - The Queen is called a "Counselor" - The Bishop is called an "Elephant" - The rooks are called "Chariot", though the Persian word for chariot "Rohk" is what inspired the word Rook for chess.

"Vizier" is also a common name for the Queen/Counselor piece, though this sometimes refers to a different version which moves 1 square horizontally or vertically instead of diagonally.

And it's the only promotion that exists... Like legit all you can do is downgrade the pawn. I'm guessing that originally, this mechanic only existed so that pawns wouldn't remain stuck on the last row.

We call chess "shatarang - شطرنج " in Arabic, and we call the bishops elephants " فيل " , but we play the last update though 😂

Indonesian here, also often call it as elephant (gajah). I saw a world map which shown how the world call bishop which is heavily influenced by how it spread in the past

@@treplox4318 And then in Italian we have "Horse" (Knight), "Ensign" (Bishop) and "Tower" (Rook) lmao Rook being tower makes sense because the piece is literally a tower (and so is the horse, technically) Ensign/Standard Bearer i guess because they're the closest pieces to the royal couple so they'd be their real standard bearers

Fun fact, in Poland Bishop is called "goniec" , which used to be a function of messenger (someone rasked with running and passing notes or orders between Commanders). This word in modern Times can albo be colloquially translated as "chaser". I find this funnier than having 2 Bishops as your supports xD

AFAIK, there's no evidence that Chaturanga predates Chaturaji. Chaturanga might not be the "Chess 1.0".

The bishops are so weird. They can never interact with the opposing side's bishops, because each of them can only ever access 16 (edit: 8) squares with no overlap.

Man people are confused with how elephants moved, that they choose the most stupid moves for it, originally elephants move like bishops but maximum of only two diagonal square but can also jump over its own pieces but not the enemy's pieces. They also confused with the general piece (the queen), general is just like pawn but can move backwards and only can attack diagonally, this is where the confusion originated from on what happen to the pawn after it reaches the end of the board, originally it gains the ability to move backward, so acted just like the general.

These were the golden days of chess, before the devs added features like "castling" and "en passant" that no one asked for. It's been 1500 years and these lazy devs still haven't even fixed game breaking bugs like the noclip horsies. Don't support this greedy company, they obviously don't care about their player base

I heard that after they made the Queen OP by giving her full movement across the board, they decided to stop doing gameplay updates. Only patches and bug fixes were allowed after that.

Not really. Stalemate wasn't universally a draw until later (it was a draw in some places, but was e.g. a win for the stalamated player in England until 1800 or so).

There (likely) were several versions of the rules, and according to some of them yes, according to others it could also jump 2 squares in orthogonal directions. According to others it moved one square in any diagonal direction or one square forward.

"that thing is so useless it's even worse than a pawn." Alfil (bishop) and Ferz (queen) are still better than pawns, just noticeably worse than half a knight. Ferz is especially strong. Probably stronger than any other 4-directional elementary leaper.

"The Shah [K] is reckoned beyond value because of his superior dignity. The highest in value after the Shah is the Rukh [R]. Its value is one dirhem. The Faras' [N] value is 2/3 dirhem. The Firzan's [Q] value is 1/3 dirhem, but some say 3/8 dirhem. The Fil's [B] value is 1/4 dirhem. There are several possible moves: Bxc4 Nb5 Ne4 Qc8 Qc6 The queen moves are to vacate the d7 square for the king.

Back then, there's no queen -cuz woman hasn't been invented yet- Shatranj have counselor or ferz which moves one square diagonally instead of queen

Chinese nationalists have found a reference to a "river game" that predates Chaturanga, and claim that China was the first to invent chess. However, there is no evidence that this "river game" was actually Xiangqi or another game, and previously it is thought that Xiangqi comes from combining Chaturanga with another game's board, which makes the claim even more suspect.
