Chet Holmgren is one of the most unique but increasingly polarizing prospects we've seen. At 7 foot with terrific defensive capabilities and tantilizing offensive upside, he's put himself in the #1 pick conversation despite still being under 200 pounds.

For a player whose weakness is only his weight/strength, along with ball control and playmaking which isn't at all expected from an NBA big man especially that young, he is special

Crazy how this comment mentions ball control and play making then the very next year we see Wemby who is basically a taller/bigger more mobile and better handles version of Chet who’s already special 😅

I think it will really be hard for him to get used to the way more physical nba players. He looks like a stick and need to add at least 40 lbs of more mass. But i see why hes so high on most mock draft he is really a good prospect to be a Solid nba player in near future
@AP-ok9rs
@AP-ok9rs 2 жыл бұрын
But putting on weight is also a myth, this was a HUGE topic of debate when KD came into the league, and it kind of effected his game his first year, still averaged 20, and by his 3rd or 4th year was scoring champion Without addressing that “weakness”… shit 15 years later he has the same “weakness” and is one of the greatest scorers ever. There have been quite a few players throughout the years that came in underweight and still became stellar players… I guess it depends on play style but if your naturally tough or a finesse player which BOTH Chet are, putting on weight won’t really matter.. it will ad to his game if he does but he’ll be fine if he doesn’t

Give him 2 years in the NBA to muscle up before he truly becomes something special. He’s too tough and too competitive though, to not be a winning basketball player from day 1. @GoZags43 2 жыл бұрын
If he “steadily adds some beef to his frame,” and stays relatively healthy, then I will guarantee 5X All Star, likely 3+ All NBA teams as well. Chet is as close to a “Perfect Prospect” as you can find (outside of the Lebron level savants) EXCEPT for his frame/strength. I’m of the opinion that if frame is a prospects only real weakness, then you take that player 1st overall and never look back. “Too skinny” is the EASIEST attribute to improve massively in just a few seasons.

He's getting slept on. As a Rockets fan I understand the whole draft the best player available and I'm hearing a lot of Jabari Smith/Paolo Banchero hopefuls in our fanbase but, it seems that I'm one of the exception of rockets fans who feel that we should draft need over talent. We have a opportunity to draft a Kevin Durant/Brandon Ingram type of player on the offensive and who will immediately improve our defense. The Rockets were historically bad on the defensive end this year we need to improve that style we don't need another score, we need to take a power forward who we can plug in alongside and has a real high potential on both end of the court as Alperen Sengun.
@philphillip4305
@philphillip4305 2 жыл бұрын
The Rockets main issue is the charactor of the player you guys are drafting. The Rockets have 2 or 3 young kids who are of low charactor. You guys need to start finding high charactor, skill players. John Wall is a gangster. Green is very immature even for a 20 year old kid. Jr is a really bad..bad locker room guy. That's why he fell down to the 30th pick. Christian Wood is a spicy personality.

I used to think he'd be a bust because he was too skinny. But, if he is used as a 4 primarily until he adds some more bulk, I think he'll be fine. Prime Serge Ibaka is a good comparison I don't see that much but I really think fits quite well. With his narrow shoulders though, I don't think he'll ever be able to fill out like Giannis has. So I guess he'll always play at least some of his minutes with another big on the court. His shooting and mobility on both ends of the floor make that a possibility, though.

I disagree with some here saying he is a "complimentary player". He has legit super-star potential. He is more of a 4 in the NBA, not a 5. Unlike in college, NBA will give him a LOT more open opportunities to shoot and create. His passing is a strength not a weakness and it will work well with his handles and fluidity. As long as his 3pt shot holds up in the NBA, he will get a lot of points. The biggest weakness wasn't mentioned - it's the risk of injuries. Anytime, you get a 7 footer on such a thin frame, it's a question mark. Like with KP, it's something that doesn't have to be a risk without a history of injuries. NBA is punishing on players' bodies. IF he gains 20 pounds, will it make him less or more prone to injuries? No one knows!
@billr5842
@billr5842 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's his thin frame that is a particular cause for concern regarding injuries. There are plenty of players who are actually too big and the forces are too much for their joints. I actually think it's the opposite and his chances of injury are lower. I think it's important to see his track record of injuries.
@mrvk39
@mrvk39 2 жыл бұрын
@@billr5842 It's both. A prime example of putting too much weight and getting injured would be someone like Zion or Shaq in late 2000s. But being too thin and being so tall can be a risk for injuries, like KP, for example. Neither Zion, nor Shaq, nor KP had a track record of any particular injuries prior to the NBA

@@mrvk39 How about Greg Oden, Anthony Davis? These were bigger explosive players. Chet isn't particularly explosive and doesn't play like those 2. He is also agile which is generally a good sign. Porzingis is 7'3" and he isn't exactly skinny and he actually has a freakish vertical leap (for his height) so it's no surprise he got injured. But then again, injuries are totally random in many cases and you really don't know for sure.

@@billr5842 He was VERY skinny when he entered the league! It was the biggest knock on him during draft, which is why he fell to 4. He doesn't have a freakish vertical leap. He is like Chet, with a 7'5 wingspan. He can dunk without having much of a vertical. And yes, any type of player can get injured be it Oden or Roy, but generally, many 7'0 and above have longevity issues in the NBA.

@@mrvk39 uhh porzingis had a 37.5" vertical leap in 2016. That is 2inches more than Blake Griffin. That is a freakish vertical especially for some at his size. He was 230lbs which is medium but maybe not for his height. At 7'3 he's better off strength training rather than bulking up. Of course casual NBA fans always think the opposite. When someone at that height bulks up, the weight increases quite a bit faster than if a 6'5" guard bulks up.

He’s going to be an interesting complimentary player rather than a 1st option star. Better spacing in the nba will allow him to showcase his outside shot and maybe his handles. His off ball shot blocking will be solid but he might struggle against the big boys. He’s tough and will end up being a fine pro if he can avoid injury.
@mrvk39
@mrvk39 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree. He will be the 1st option star, or at least has good potential for it. No one will match him against Jokic or Embiid in his first 2-3 years. He will play 4. And as a 4, as long as his 3pt shot translates to the NBA, he will get A LOT of scoring opportunities. He will be more like KP or KD, more of a perimeter player who will have to be guarded closely, which will give him opportunities to take people off the dribble and into the paint, where his 7'5 wingspan will great create high % shots or fouls or passes. I think you picked his biggest concern - injury risk. If he stays healthy, he is a super-star in 2-3 years.

I think it would be better for him to be a 4 rather than being a center. Let Sengun be their 5 and maybe they can copy cavs mobley allen duo. All they need is a good playmaker though since they already got 2 young scorers with green and kpj. I just hope he turns out to be a really good player man

I think the concern about Chet's frame is durability. Guys who come into the league with his type of frame tend to struggle to stay healthy over an 82 game season. Now in most cases as the player adds muscle and core strength the concern goes away, but there are questions about his ability to bulk up and build core strength.

What do you mean? If anything it’s the opposite, guys who are too heavy tend to have injury problems, like Zion for example.

@@guledm12 you went too far on the extreme. His frame is not built for 82 games it’s a fact. Mentioning zion makes no sense. Zion gets injured due to his landings from his ridiculously explosive jumping

Honestly, the level of defense, basketball iq, speed, strength and physicality is leagues above in the nba. We've seen the best shooters in college struggle to get a shot off in the nba. JJ Reddick for instance struggled for YEARS until he got in nba shape competing in the gym against peak Dwight Howard. And with Chets frame he's going to be bullied and pushed out the box more than Marvin Bagley lol. I imagine he'll prolly average a block in the nba well shooting around 30% from three and thats me trying to be optimistic. Also despite his weight he's actually REALLY SLOOOOOW, and in the nba people will prolly blow past him and body him to create space. Now thats not to say that he won't have a huge career and make progress in time, but I really believe thats dependant on him getting in better shape and putting on A LOT of muscle. He may be worthy of the #1 pick in time but I think he's possibly the least nba ready amongst the big 4 or 5 in the draft.
