Maybe ignition coil or map sensor? I have a 91 Oldsmobile silhouette that had a similar problem and after I changed those the IAC and TPS it ran like new. I’d try the ignition coil first though. Oh also if it’s a TBI try the fuel injectors there’s two of them and they’re not hard to replace.
@HeX81783
@HeX81783 4 жыл бұрын
You can check off the IAC, idle is not the issue, it's fuel related, if it has a TPS it may be the cause, that issue most likely is a a sistem to lean when you ask for more power. Any whu . Best of luck man, like your vids. Keep on trucking.

The knock sensor is tapered pipe thread and the tightening torque is the volume control.

I have had this issue a few times before where it essentially limits the revs of an engine and leads to rough running at the top end. Both occasions this was fixed by changing the Camshaft/Crankshaft Sensor. This tends to fail in such a way that it doesn’t effect low end revs, but as the engine speeds up it looses the reference between the crankshaft and the camshaft speeds. This should be another cheap fix so well worth trying I reckon. Best of luck from Scotland!

Finners The crank and cam sensors are often wired together to give the Engine Computer an average. A loose timing chain can wreak havoc
@finthedin
@finthedin 4 жыл бұрын
sammolloy1 yeah absolutely, although the timing can go bad due to the sensor without it being loose.
@jojograffsgnino276

This one has a spark control coil located in the distributor to provide timing signal for computer and ignition coil. It's likely not the problem. My dad had one that the distributor was walblely and the engine would shutter and shake badly.

Not the IAC. if it idles fine, that's not the issue. Put a pressure gauge on the fuel rail before replacing anything pump related. Check the Throttle position sensor with an ohmmeter and see if there are dropouts as you open the throttle. Don't just throw parts at it.
@HeX81783
@HeX81783 4 жыл бұрын
I said the same things, didn't even see your comment xd but you're right it most likely is the TPS that's not sending the correct signal and leaning the sistem.

But....does this even have a throttle position sensor? Isn't that only something on wire-driven cars? Dunno, I don't even work on fuel injected cars.
@sammolloy1

Taking out a TPS that has 150,000 miles on it to test it and putting it back in makes no sense for a $25 part. If you can get to the plug to test the sweep with an analog meter, sure, you can save the R&R time.

Had a sputtering problem on a 91 Astro twice. Happened at highway speeds under load like accelerating or going up a hill. New distributor cap fixed it each time. I wonder if the heat in the back of the engine bay somehow shortens the life of the cap.

The biggest question for me is: Does the engine also shake when you rev it in Neutral and Park? If it does, the problem is limited to engine and torque converter. If it doesn't, then the gearbox is the biggest suspect. Start with flushing the gearbox (is it up to level anyway?) as old fluid can also cause problems and I even have seen the same problem caused by old transmission fluid. And if I might make a suggestion? Plan on keeping the Astro for a year and see after that what you want to do with it: Sell it or keep it. You enjoy that van way to much to just fix it and sell it. If that was the case, you wouldn't be wanting to fix this problem. You didn't put this much effort into the Aerovan... Waiting for the next video!

Not sure why nobody has mentioned the egr. Egr is involved when the motor is warming up and during heavy acceleration. (Other nit picky people will likely comment and tell you more) Egr on these is easy, especially without cruise control components in the way. Just two 3/8 bolts. Easy to pull and inspect. Easy to test to. Worth doing. That said, said seem like a fuel or spark breakup. There's something on these dizzys that also detects heavy acceleration? Not sure. Chaising annlying idle on my 4.3 tbi in a 91 astro. Still learning.

@mrmontebuilder 4 жыл бұрын
Check the base timing, it cranks like it is advanced . I am thinking that maybe it is advanced to the point the ECM can't pull the timing back enough to keep it from pinging. Also check the EGR, fuel injected engines are tuned as lean as possible for emissions and are very dependent on the enrichment the EGR provides.

I’m wondering if it’s the mass air flow. I would think it’s either an air or fuel issue when you give it full throttle.
@jojograffsgnino276
@jojograffsgnino276 3 жыл бұрын
This has a map sensor not mass airflow sensor. I would check the throttle position first then you can check the MAP (manifold pressure sensor) located right of the throttle body. Fuel pump may be the problem. It may not be providing enough fuel which will make it cut out!

Thats a REALLY strange noise. Whats throwing me off is actually seeing the engine shake. I have never seen an engine like that before shake (since its under the hood of a car). Is that spark knock? If so, I have seen REALLY old gas cause it. Also if the egr isn't opening you can have spark knock.

Gooner Shane They had codes but all manufacturers were different and the diagnostics were still pretty stupid. A bad fuel filter might show up as a bad O2 sensor for instance. 1996 was the year OBDII was mandated, with standardized codes. Mustang went ahead and did the 3.8 in 94 and Camaro in midyear 95 when they switched to the 3800. The 94 up 5.0 V8 Mustang dash had the OBDII plug I think but there were no wires until the 1996 which also had the 4.6 V8

john a. I think the “Mustang” has had just about every Ford engine ever made put in it. The 3.8 “Essex” was put in in 1994, then replaced with the 4.0 “Cologne” at some point. Today I would choose the new 2.3 as found in the Ranger if I were to buy one.

I would start with simple stuff that you would want to change out anyhow whether you had the issue or not. Plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, etc. Could be a gap problem with worn out plugs. If it doesn't work, probably needed to do it anyhow. Just a suggestion!

What does the knock sensor do? I have a different vehicle but when I press hard on the gas, the vehicle will rattle really hard or (knock, ping) depending on who you talk to. It's worse in the heat and worse with lower octane gasoline. All my Toyotas have done it. Service Sept always claims to be stupid and cant fix because they don't know what it is. Thx.
@robs1852

When the sensor detects a knock, the computer will retard the timing until no more knocking is detected. I think in GM OBD1 the timing is retarded in 2 degree increments.

Chris, I love your channel and mostly all the cars you feature on your channel. However, why are you messing with this Astro van? The reason the Astro van is stumbling and mumbling is because its an Astro van. GM engineered these well then the cost cutting executives swooped in and made so much cost cutting, you should hang a holy rosary from the rearview mirror and be thankful its running and not falling apart. I remember when these things were new, Chris. My friend's dad bought one and we went for a spin the first month he had it and some aggressive driver pulled in front of him and cut him off. He slammed on the brakes and the door came undone (no idea how that happened, it was closed) and it fell out of the van and onto the street. That was when it had 5k miles.

@@gchsbus The 4.3L V6 is a very good running engine in this and the C series trucks. There is no reason to say it is stumbling because it is an Astro. there is obviously a fuel problem probably from sitting.
