1st: A lot of folks want to know why I did not install slotted, drilled, vented rotors and a different pad. ANSWER: I only do what I am asked to do by the customer, it is not my car 2nd: Why are the front hubs splined? ANSWER: This is the same wheel part number bearing used in the 2008 to 2015 Cadillac CTS AWD. GM just fitted them to the Camaro too...

@frugalprepper 6 жыл бұрын
I wasn't saying you should consider drilled and slotted rotors. I was saying the customer should. It probably won't be long before those rotors start drinking red bull all over again! At then end of the day if they pay the bill the customer's are the boss. I guess that would be one hub you don't have to worry about the wheel flying off if you forget to torque the axle nut to spec on a STS.

Drilled and slotted are only a gimmick anyways. Until you get into larger diameter rotors that aren’t 12”, and more like a17 or 18” diameter rotor

Ya gotta love the brake job videos. About a year ago I put the 4 piston Brembos all the way around on my G8. I bought new one's from amazon The silver one's that came on the CTSV with Camaro front rotor's and Chevy SS rears. It upped the Sex appeal seeing these through the wheels at least in my mind which is somewhat warped. Thank you for taking the time to so all of us.

Nice that you were able to get those pins out w/o issues. Last time i worked on a Brembo brake setup (Cad CTS V) the pins were seized. Had to cut them out. Liked your Redbull comment, was funny. As far as the splined hubs go, that's a very common thing, all the auto companies share parts between models. Sometimes, there'll be parts shared between companies. A good example is the steering columns, Chrysler used Saginaw columns for many years. For those that don't know, Saginaw is a GM parts division.

Brake jobs on Brembo calipers are the best! I did my first brake job on my SRT8 at almost 60k miles. Pulled the stock Brembo pads out and they still had more than 1/4" of pad material. I don't race SCCA I do drive her hard but I do engine brake all the time and the 392 with the Nag1 engine brakes well. Brembo all the things!
@oneuniverseable
@oneuniverseable 2 жыл бұрын
One small note I discovered: GM procedure states you are to replace the caliper mounting bolts if you remove them. The angle torque spec indicates that these are a torque to yield bolt. They are single use. You could probably use them multiple times but I wouldn't be surprised if the repeated stretching over time will cause them to come loose. Also, coat bolts with loctite completely for the first 2/3rds of the bolt.. Seems kind of crazy to me. But, it is a Brembo performance item made for a performance car. Not surprising that something like this would be the case.

The double screwdriver method for seating the calipers works ok, but it has been my experience that sometimes the pistons can slowly walk back out if 1 isn't quick enough to install the new pads. So I bought 1 of those scissor type tools to seat all 4 pistons at once. It has a small T thumb screw handle that usually is long enough, though sometimes I had to substitute a regular bolt with added length. Note that the rotor cannot be installed when using this tool ( I believe I got it through Mac ) Also 100% agree with the upgrade to DOT 4. I did that on my Challenger, and for whatever reason, the brakes feel better, and the pads seem to last longer.. Can't tell ya why, just sayn from my experience.. Good vid!

15:30 Eric I was saying to myself no, it doesn't matter which way you orient the pads as they're all the same but you worked it out so scratch that idea! My Grandma always taught me when bleeding brakes always start at the caliper(bleeder) that has the longest route from the Master Cylinder. Mrs O cracked me up at the end when she was taking the PI$$ because my very own Mrs O does the same! I'd be recommending drilled & slotted rotors to that guy (although they will most likely crack if they cook them) & great call on the dot4, another fantastic video Eric, love those fancy editing skills! 👍

As road racing tires allowed greater track speeds in the 1960’s, race teams began seeing a great loss in brake capability. In that era of organic and asbestos based pad friction material, a problem occurred with the adhesives used to fasten the pad to the steel backing plates. As the temperature of the pads increased, the adhesive would break down and cause a layer of gas to form between the rotor and the pads. That vapor layer retained heat in the rotor and acted as an “air-bearing” high-pressure area between the pad and rotor. By drilling holes in the rotor surface those gasses were able to be dissipated into the vented center of the rotor, no longer interfering with the pad to rotor friction. .Since asbestos based brake pads were outlawed in the 1990’s, new materials and bonding adhesives have been developed. The now common ceramic based pads do not produce the outgassing problem in any conceivable street use, so there is no real function

I was so glad to see Eric put the caliper bolts back on with a torque wrench. With an impact you can literally destroy the threads in the caliper because Brembo calipers are typically aluminum. Many people go gorilla on them tightening and loosing them and next thing you know bye bye threads. Same with the bleeders.
