Thier not to bad of a transmission. People just overheat them and never change the fluid. Then they have the “I know a guy who can do it cheaper” rebuild it. And losing reverse is usually user error not letting the transmission engage reverse before accelerating.

@Perseus1275 GM renamed the 700R4 in 1989 or 1990 to the 4L60. Still a 700R4 just with a different name. Both have a TV cable and a mechanical governor. Not a 100% on that but pretty sure.

I worked at a 4WD shop in the San Joaquin valley in CA in the 1980s. During cotton picking season we would have turbo 400 transmissions and converters lined up and ready to go because the farmers would try to tow their huge overloaded cotton trailers to the gin and puke their transmissions. In and out in 3 hours or less after digging out a ton of dirt from under the truck.

Re my previous post, I live in Australia where we used to have the GM (Holden) Commadore. I had 2 of these with the 3.8 litre engine and the same gl60e tranny. A lot of owners had to have rebuilds after about 200,000 km. I knew about this so made sure the fluid was changed every 30,000km and flushed every 60.000. Both station wagons loaded with tools of trade did 500,000km with no transmission problems whatsoever and engine oil change every 6000km.

What a time for this video. Just told today I need my 3rd tranny in my 09 silverado. Had a 2000 silverado with 280,000 original engine, tranny, transfer case, even wheel bearings! parked it and bought an 09. Worst mistake I've ever made. The AFM/lifter issues and the tranny issues. This thing has swore me off anything GM ever again.

Pretty much all 06/07 to 12 GM is trash. It was the bailout years after all. Later stuff is kinda better, but Ford has been reasonably consistent. These days I'd worry more about not paying through the nose vs brand loyalty, unless of course it's a known stinker.

The last, and I mean the last transmission I ever did was a 1995 Cadillac Fleetwood 4L60E transmission. An absolute nightmare to put a Master Rebuild kit into that monster only to have the owner's girlfriend claim that a snake flew into the window and that was why she ran off the road and wrecked the car. That is a true, real life, story.

Great video Eric. I think this is the first underside of a vehicle that has been Fluid Filmed for several years that I have ever seen on your channel or anyone else's for that matter. It really does prolong the life of a vehicle like you said it would. I am so lucky I have never had to contend with a vehicle rusting out, There are places in Australia where they do, though that is mostly on the islands off the main land, or if you do beach driving. Even then, it is nothing like the rust I see on your channel with vehicles that are relatively young, and when compared with Australian cars, your vehicles are practically not long off the show room floor and they are rusted out!

It's so gratifying to see the torch being put on those exhaust nuts. Also the effects are clearly shown by how the one that didn't get heat put to it wouldn't come loose. After heat.. zipped right out.

I usually don't like "part videos" not with the last few being as long as they have been, I really can't complain. Honestly glad that when you do these they aren't split into several parts just because you are looking to make more money.
