In this video I outline possible causes including diagnosis and repair of common issues effecting Chevy, GMC and Cadillac trucks and SUV’s such as Chevy Silverado, Tahoe, GMC Sierra, Yukon, Cadillac Escalade and others with a symptom of no 4X4 operation, the transfer case range switch buttons won’t illuminate and/or there is a service 4X4 message displayed on the drivers information display. This video also contains helpful information for those replacing the transfer case shift (encoder) motor. Watch this video for more information.

@@82thetots i believe it would be counter clockwise in that case but also you can tell by looking at the splines on the replacement motor and just mirroring it on the transfer case side. I look at the mounting bolt locations to determine the spline clock positioning. Hope this helps. Good luck and thanks for watching my vids.

Only 152296 miles, it's not broken in yet. In my company I buy used Duramax GMC or Chevy. Usually they have around 120K miles. I tend to pay cash, usually less than 25% of the price of a new truck. My theory is that small businesses like mine have good months and bad months but payments go on and on and on regardless of the bank account. Most often a $700 repair bill (or even higher) is less than a single payment for a new truck. I pay someone else to do the truck work while I keep at my company's job. Some self anointed business-men say it's better to work from borrowed money rather than cash. I prefer to be debt free and drive a 15 year old truck. There are five other people in my company who do our field work and I keep my eye on the trucks they use. After all, the trucks belong to my company. Excellent video.

I ran out of gas on a steep downhill grade in my 99 Blazer. AAA guy brought me some and said when an older Blazer is below a quarter tank it can stop reaching the gas that flowed forward. It was a 16% grade. By the time I got down to the bottom (no place to stop) I had driven about 3 or 4 miles with no power steering or brakes. It was a relief to be sure. But I had driven up to the ski area in 4WD and by the time I got down the fuse was blown from me trying to start it a few times. So the first thing I checked, as you suggested was that fuse. I put in a new one and it works again...thank you for saving me hundreds at the dealer.

Tim is an awesome mechanic. He knows exactly what to check- real quick. I did a rear main seal changeout and didn't ensure the wiring harness to the transfer case was properly secured. Just like Tim said in the video, if this harness falls down, it will rub against the driveshaft. In our case, it wore through the insulation. Initially it was an intermittent SERVICE 4WD light but then it was constant. After I shotgunned the selector switch and the front axle actuator, the lights on the selector switch went out. Tim was able to isolate the problem within a few minutes. Found the blown fuse that caused a no comm to transfer case control module code... Then he was able to pull the codes off the transfer case control module... Looking it up in an online database, there were a number of possibilities. The problem became immediately apparent upon inspection of the transfer case. Don't be like Charlie- Watch the video! I highly recommend Doner Automotive in Anchorage, Alaska if you are lucky enough to live here.

Good point about that ground. On my 2000 that ground bolt is threaded into sheet steel, easily stripped out. I put a nut on the back so it couldn't move, when diagnosing an ABS code. You also make a good point about the cost of parts. However we who drive old cars save thousands of dollars per year from less depreciation and less insurance compared to newer vehicles! So, we shouldn't complain too much about the cost of parts. New vehicles built today are much more likely to fall apart before their time.

Yo! Thanks for the video. I replaced my transfer case shift motor. I got a new one at O'Reilly's. Removed and installed it in an hour and 20 minutes, which included messing around with the ramps and getting the vehicle all safe. If viewers don't have a battery operated impact drill, now's the time to buy one, so you can take that gravel guard off in 20 seconds. I have a Rigid I bought at HD. The gravel guard bolts and 3 bolts on the T case motor are 15 mm. You can take the lower bolt out with the battery driven impact, but I used my 3/8" air ratchet for the middle and top bolts. I had to get them started with a long 3/8" ratchet first. They are tight and require some work to get them out, even after you get them started. Before you line the new one up, put the electrical connector on and turn on your ignition, hold your brake and put the truck in NEUTRAL and select 2 HI on the push button. This will line up the drive key on the T Case Shift Motor. Put it back in PARK and turn off your ignition and resume installation. PS: The drive shaft has a rubber boot on it with metal tie-wraps. You only need to cut the rear one. I goofed and cut both. I used a nice plastic tie-wrap on both when I put it back together. That boot is a tight fit, so it's not going anywhere. Thanks again! My 4WD is back in business!

@@osvaldo07108 Sometimes I would have no lights. Then days later it would randomly begin working again. Or it would randomly have 4WD Hi selected. I just had a feeling it was the transfer case shift motor. When you push the button to go into auto 4WD, that motor activates to engage the transfer case. If I did that, then put it back to 2WD that's when it would start failing. I figured that had to be the root cause of my problems, so I rolled the dice and changed it. Problem solved.

Have you sampled the fluid in the diff? I’m sure if it has metal flak it probably needs some TLC. Too bad you sold your machine, you could use it to commute while your truck is down.

I watched a video of some parking lot where seemed like twenty people got stuck trying to leave work. Even the plow trucks were getting stuck. Dang, you guys are giving Alaska a run for their money! Stay warm my friend!

Did you have any codes? My 4x4 doesn't work and I scanned for codes and I didn't get any codes related to the transfer case. Thank you for taking the time to show us your work!☺️

Thanks for the tips- one of the best step by step videos I’ve seen. You’re on my first out list now! I’m down the road in Kenai, trying to figure our 2001 GMC Yukon 4WD service light. Replaced TCCM, cleaned the ground location and added dielectric grease. Replaced ATC fuse, it will switch from 2WD, to 4HI, but when going back to 2WD it blows the ATC fuse and service light comes back on. Thinking there might be a short somewhere??? Doesn’t seem like the front diff actuator would be the problem.
