Cabin Air Filter: amzn.to/2Kj8gMg (US), amzn.to/3ECR26F (UK)
Quick DIY on how to change the cabin air filter on a Chevrolet Volt 2016-2019. There is no reason why you should pay a dealer to replace the air filter on your Chevy Volt as this only takes about 10 minutes and only requires 1 tool. Not to mention you won't have to spend $150 on something that costs about $15.

Great video, this helped me a lot. Probably the toughest part for me is getting that side panel off. Took a fair amount of force and I thought for sure something was going to break. Also remember when putting that side panel back, the back part goes underneath the weatherproofing strip on the door.

Thanks for watching! Yes, the weatherproofing strip was adjusted, I just didn't film that part, but good catch!

Thanks for this. Chevy dealer wanted $125 to change ($80 part $45 labor). Bought the filter for $17 and it took abt 20 minutes to install.

I bought filters on Ali Express for 10 bucks, shipping included. They're not worth more than 50 cents.

Great demonstration for someone who knows little to nothing about cars. I particularly appreciate the explanation of how to that the side cover off. BTW, a 9/32 " socket works in place of a 7MM socket.

Chevy has never really got the hang of this "cabin air filter" thing. In my Honda Accord, you didnt need to remove ANY screws, you just pushed a catch and the glovebox door swung down and the flap covering the filter popped off. Total time to swap - 30 seconds (not counting however long it took to empty and refill the glovebox; of course, but this requires that also). Altho I guess this is still not as bad as it could be. In my 2002 Silverado you had to remove the entire bottom of the dash all the way across, and there was only 2" of space below it so you had to use an offset screwdriver to get at it. Took probably 30-45 minutes. Worse - in my 2011 Silverado - designed at a time when Chevy was in bankruptcy, they used scarce engineering dollars to BLOCK OUT THE POSSIBILITY OF EVEN HAVING A CABIN AIR FILTER!! So all that stringy gross rubbish the 2002 filter trapped - the 2011 passes on to me to filter with my lungs. Thanks Chevy, with friends like you...

In the 1st gen Bolt they had it right. You didn't have to remove any screws or not even remove your glovebox - the glovebox has a separate hatch on the bottom to change the cabin filter. So what you see in this video is a downgrade 😅 ... on more ways than one, actually. There does not seem to be any soft dampening material on the bottom of glovebox either like you have in 1st gen, but just hard plastic.

@@Jinppa Thats awesome. Why is that so hard to do?
@Jinppa

@@natehill8069 As always, it comes down to money. 1st gen was kind of a high-tech prototype and I have read that Chevy lost a lot of money for every Volt they sold. 2nd gen simply had to be made cheaper to produce and they skimped on few things, glovebox obviously being one.

You could make the argument that there are a lot of sensitive electronics that you wouldn't want a thief easily accessing behind the glove compartment and that making it take longer is actually a good thing.

Why the hell did they make it so complicated in the gen 2 volt? my gen 1 had a 2 step process to get to the filter and no removal of screws was needed.

Important! If you own a gen 1 volt (I have a 2014). There is no side panel that needs to be removed, and no screws to be undone. In the glovebox there is a rubber mat, and a plastic cover that needs to be removed instead. The plastic cover should have a small handle at the top of it (on the roof of the glove compartment). Once these two pieces are out, the replacement is identical to the video.
@Jinppa
@Jinppa 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, compared to 1st gen this feels like a downgrade. Your explanation is excellent, but I would like to add that in the 1st gen there's only one low clip/finger ring or whatever you call it and it is on the top middle of the filter box and not on the sides like we see in this video of 2nd gen.
@bmw803
@bmw803 Жыл бұрын
Same here but a 2015. Not sure why they couldn't have designed this to be like Gen 1. This is ridiculous that you have to dismantle the whole glove box out.

Thanks for this video. How ofetn do.you need to change the filter? I own chevy volt 2016 But barely uses it. I think my husband had it taken to the chevy dealer to have the filter changed. But this time i want to do it myself..looks pretty easy. I was able to change my plate light on my Murano. I should be able to do this -no sweat.
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 3 жыл бұрын
I would suggest changing once a year since they are so cheap and takes 15 minutes. Most manufacturers recommend changing every 15-20k miles. It will also depend on whether you are using cheaper filters or carbon ones etc. THanks for watching!

great video ! any idea if the life duration of the filter resets itself ? you can monitor the life - usage in % of the filter...wonder if changing the filter will automaticaly reset it in the infotainment system.

There is no need to ever replace this filter in normal use. Even in extreme use it's probably marginally important. I never will. Oil changes every 6k on Volt, filter e/o change (use fram ULTRA filter) and synth oil. Change your transaxle fluid every 50k. Air filter for motor every 20k if extreme use, or 40k otherwise is fine. Well engineered car. My friend works for Conti and worked on the team making the toilet seat (wraps the shifter on 2nd gen). :) Enjoy that. Very, very easy to do these service items at home.

Not true. These can get extremely dirty and will smell bad after a while. Source: Me. I bought a 2017 and the previous owner never replaced theirs and it was nasty.
