As leg locks become more and more popular in BJJ a common question from newer White Belts is "Should I learn leg locks?"
Now every gym is a little different. But at least for me and my gym, I 100% encourage BJJ White Belts to learn leg locks. 1 it helps prevent injuries as the students are more educated with the position. But it also helps prepare them down the road so they don't end up being a Purple, Brown or Black Belt who's forced to learn leg locks for the 1st time.
Also, just a couple of months ago I had several of my White Belt students hit leg locks in competition.
So in the video I'm going to dive into some basics on using the main leg lock, the straight ankle lock, that will be available to White Belts at most gyms as well as most competitions. I'll also show some details about the reap to help you avoid the position if you're competing and it's illegal.
If you're a White Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, then i hope this video is useful to you.

Go for the toes, that's what most people get wrong. they go below the toes and crank the load bearing metatarsals instead of the flexible phalanges. When you pull down properly from the toes the leverage shoots up the extensor longus and tibialis anterior and that's a world of pain most people aren't ready for. So remember: Attack the distal phalanges for leverage not the load bearing metarsals.

I'm a white belt with an admittedly pretty heavy interest in leg locks. My gym doesn't frequently cover leg locks on account of my class being made entirely of white belts (it's a new gym in an area with zero other BJJ gyms), but I'm preparing for a competition of my own, and this video is genuinely PERFECT for everything I've been looking for. The entrances are awesome, the sweep/entrance from the bottom in particular is something I've been wondering about for ages, and the explanation on how to safely and efficiently apply to submission itself was awesome. Thanks for directing a video quite specifically on white belt ankle locks lol I appreciate this video a ton, and will definitely continue referencing it for practice.

I learned this during one of my earliest classes but have never gotten it. So I’m refreshing my knowledge abir with this thank you. I also plan on using it as a way to pass guard not just finishing a sub. I don’t remember who but someone has said that white belts learning leg locks is bad because then you never learn how to guard pass. But with this you kinda learn both I guess.

Actually my highest % finish right now, most other WBs have fuck all clue of what to do with their legs and they're usually wide open. More experienced players know you can actually push this one really far before risking injury and won't tap, but WBs usually freak out when you get this on. Also I like to hook my inside foot into the back of the guy's knee, it helps with finishing it from some positions.

I'd love to see you show defenses for foot/ankle/leg locks too. As someone who doesn't know them, it's easy to just never use them, but if your opponent uses them... it's not a good idea to not defend.

The right leg, on the hip, is it possible to just bend it as well and use both knees to clamp down on the leg like a single leg takedown while doing the foot lock? I am just asking because i don't want to 'accidently' reap - so i am thinking of using both knees to pinch the leg instead of placing my foot on the hip because during competition, my nerves be flopping everywhere. Is it still just as effective?

Hey chew I need some advice from you, I’m a white belt and in my gym there is this blue belt who thinks he is a trainer or a bjj teacher, he constantly tries teaching you or explaining you every single thing and most of the times I don’t even ask for his advice, it has reached to the point where a purple or even a black belt is helping me with something, and he interrupts them. I don’t like that, is very annoying, it doesn’t let me focus on my drilling or rolling and the issue is that we are kinda pals (I just tolerate him) so I don’t know how to tell him to leave me alone without offending him and me ending up in a leg lock or some shit, thanks :3

Leg locks, arm bar, and a choke are something everyone should know. Being able to do those 3 things puts you at an inherent advantage to average men if needed for self defense. Never ceased to amaze me working as a door guy in bars in college how guys with clearly no clue would pick fights with strangers.

Hi Chewie. Quick question for you. I’m in the military so I’m constantly moving around the country which means I can’t train consistently at one gym and build a solid relationship with the instructors. How do you recommend I make the most out of my training and consistently improve while having to switch gyms every few years or even months in my case? Thanks and love the content!

I think it's just because of how quickly this sub can go sideways. It doesn't hurt until it blows your knee up. By then it's too late. Being a whitebelt you may lack the control or understanding of how close to disaster you could be
