This is an odd little rifle from China! Here in the west, we arent taught much about China's participation in fighting the Japanese in WW2. The weapons they used were quite varied, however they werent running into battle with old muskets or rusty old single shots. They did their best to supply their troops with modern rifles, such as these Type 24s!

It says Henan Militia, Henan is a province in central China. After the civil war in 1949, communist China gave all these old rifles to the militia - paramilitary force, while the army equipped all with the soviet rifles SKS

@@boltforward3611 looks like it also has a trainer marking on it too. I've seen the same character in a large circle marking on some hanyang 88 rifles. sorry if im wrong

I will add some more. During the 80s China just opened up to the world, and for some reason the Henan government thought it would be a good idea to sell some old rifles abroad to get some foreign currency, and they happened to have a lot of Chiang Kai Shek rifle storage, so most of the times when you see a Chiang Kai Shek rifle abroad it's from Henan. Actually that time they are selling those at a extremely low price, they are selling them in bundles instead of one by one, and since the storage environment is poor it's pretty hard to find a good one like this. One of my friend told me this story.

The bigger black seal on the stock has its meaning “the property of Heinan province militia” (河南民兵), and the smaller one on the right with a Chinese character (练) in it means "for training use ".

For reference, these are generally based on the Mauser Standardmodell (a pre-Kar98k design that looks like the Germans tried to make a Vz. 24 using a Gewehr-98). The Chinese guns (also known as the Type-24 Zhongzheng) are usually of decent quality, but of course time and wear can make them dangerous. Yours seems pretty good.

I have also came in to a Chiang Kai-Shek rifle recently in Australia! mine is marked 34-11 I think is the 34th year of the republic (1945), it has the national arsenal and the emblem of the Hanyang Arsenal marking (the star and ZhongZheng (中正式) marked underneath, mine has an excellent bore for some odd reason, no communist marking but a rather interesting Taiwanese marking in white marked 3920 Taiwanese Yuan, believed to be refurbished by the KMT and saw private ownership some time in Taiwan, the person I bought it from has owned the rifle since 1984. There's just so much history in collecting these old rifles

I own the book “arming the dragon” which is dedicated to documenting these kinds of rifles. It’s been re published if you’d like to get a copy and are interested in knowing more about your rifle.

Great video! The large cartouche on the stock says 河南民兵 or Henan Militia. For the receiver markings, the bow and arrow inside a gear wheel suggests that this is a later production gun. It’s a symbol of the Ordnance Office and started appearing on weapons and equipment around 1942/1943. The characters at the bottom are 中正式 or Type Zhongzheng. Jiang Zhongzheng, or Chiang Chungcheng was one of Chiang Kaishek’s other names. I’ve heard stories of these characters being removed from some of the rifles after the Chinese civil war as the PLA/People’s militia didn’t want the name of their enemy on their rifle. Perhaps that’s what happened here?

I have one that was a bring back from the Korean war. Mine has the same markings in the top as yours but even more worn down. Mine also has a brand burnt onto the stock. I was told that the buttstock markings are communist when they captured them from the nationalists and didn't have the machinery to re inscribe the guns. I'd intend to believe the story you were told at purchase. I am in the UK and I got a similar story. Mine was brought back by the royal ulster rifles after their deployment to Korea with the British army. It's seen its share of action and it shows

34 to 49....then under Soviet influence Im guessing is why they went to the Type 53. I love Mosins but I'd rather have a Mauser in battle any day. Mosins were probably easier and cheaper to produce though. That's a shame about the bore, not bad condition otherwise. Still a cool piece IMO.

It’s called a Chiang Kai-Shek Mauser because the proper name of the type is Zong Zheng type infantry-Calvary rifle. (中正式步騎槍),Zong-Zheng being CKS’s other name. The type name is on the banner that got rubbed (perhaps intentionally) off.

From what I can tell, I think the wear n tear is more natural vs intentional. I have seen defaced rifles, they tend to show machine marks. I think this rifle had a really long and difficult life! Hopefully it is enjoying retirement in my gun safe Thanks you for your info - thats so cool!

These float around at random here in the States, I came across this one at a local gun show. Havent seen one before/since. Chinese guns sadly dont have a good reputation in the US due to people's perceptions of like... walmart cheap stuff... so Chinese firearms for the longest time have been ignored and forgotten.
