I really enjoyed the video. However, there is one important detail that you (and surprisingly many other collectors) got wrong: The 98 action does not vent into the magazine. Yes, the holes are on the bottom of the bolt but when it is locked they turn 90° clockwise which lines them up perfectly along the left receiver wall. The gases are vented through the holes, then between the bolt body and left receiver wall and out the thumb-cutout on the left. They are blocked from going rearward by the bolt shrowd shield. Venting hot gases into a fixed box magazine would be a terrifying idea because it would blow out the magazine's side walls which would themselves catastrophically burst the wood around the magazine into pieces of shrapnel. Thanks for your overview of Mauser rifles. I have an exception regarding the use of 1893 bolt design with the flat base. The Spanish 1916 rifle used the same bolt as the 1893. They are interchangeable. I have the Persian M98/28 rifle which was manfactured by BRNO. It's a great shooter. As someone else mentioned, the K98 vents from the left side of the large ring.

Great vid! I have several mausers. I grew up shooting groundhogs with dads, the sweet 8mm K-98 he bought when he was 16 in the 60's for $40! It was an unissued numbers matching bring back "GLOVER!" With the stamped large trigger gaurd! Made in 1944 in BRNO. He shot rats with it! I didn't own a bb gun for 5 yrs after I was picking off ground hogs at 250 yrds with that K-98! I was 7 yrs old! It still looks just as nice as when he got it, because I was taught that if I ever fell to place my body between that K98 and the ground or get an ass whoopin'! I could DA it sitting on my right hand blindfolded at 10! I told my wife if this house catches fire leave everything, grab that K98 and run! Watching you it suddenly hit me that some of the rifles we own were the last vision of earthly life, the last warmth felt by fallen hands as desperate prayers for home and family misty vision escaped dying lips. Humbling!

The hole on the trigger guard is the point of attachment for a winter trigger, that was used on the Mauser 98.

what brand or kind of 7mm ammo do you most recommend? in my chilean and spanish civil war 7mm converted Vz.98/22, the S&B 7mm makes a weird zippy sound when it leaves the barrel, and it makes the barrel vibrate on the chilean one. a little afraid to shoot those right now but i’m not sure if it’s the ammo or the guns

I picked up a handy convention from the gun writers of my youth referring to the "pattern 98" Mauser and then the "model 09" (Argentine) etc.

2 minor things: 1) the non-rotating extractor was first on the Spanish M1892, & 2) the thumb cutout first appeared on the Swedish M96.

Hey dude, love your channel. I have a question though about bolts. I have what I think is a Chilean short rifle barrel and action but the bolt has the square flat bottom. Will a Spanish 93 Mauser bolt work in a Chilean rifle and vice versa or do I just have a short Spanish Mauser

I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I own guns received from my father but I am not an authority on them. I watched your video looking for a 7mm that has the same crest and same numbers under the crest as mine however, it wasn't shown. Mine has an ornate crest with 1900 underneath it. I know that isn't much to go off of but my gun is in storage in another state and that is all I remember from it. Any information is appreciated, thank you.

@22:15 when you say that the yugo M48 is interchangeable with the Mauser 98 action, what parts do you mean ? In my experience, that is patently false since the Yugoslav 24/47 and M48 Mausers are actually FN copies of the M98 action, shortened to an intermediate length; the bolts will not interchange in each other's actions.

Why would they design the 98 vent holes to blow ruptured case gases into the magazine? Seems even more dangerous than the venting gas itself

I'm actually not a fan of the safety being able to be applied when the gun is decocked. On my Swedish M38, sometimes when I fire the rifle, the recoil causes the safety to flip up and lock the bolt.
