The Chicago Electric Red Design Auto-Darkening Welding Helmet is a great inexpensive welding helmet for DIYers, welding students, metal art welders, and everyone else in between. I can speak as to whether or not professionals would like this welding helmet. I am sure it would be adequate but I imagine not a favorite. I have been using this helmet for quite a long time and have been really happy with it. It is an ANSI Certified Auto Darkening Welding Helmet, so its cheap, and safe. You can find it at Harbor Freight for anywhere from $45 - $55. I recommend it!

Just bought a blue design, and gonna try it out for the first time today. At my high school, we do flux arc welding. Excited to try it!

Awesome man! Good luck with the welding and helmet! The blue design helmet doesn't seem bad.

That heavy green look is a protective layer put on the inside of the lens, take it off and you're gold. I had the same issue and discovered that protective layer on there from the factory, it has several layers of those on both sides of the lens.

That protective film was removed, it had a green tint anyway.

@@DereksWorkshopAndProjects ok, I just found it all both sides of all the lenses on mine and once I got all of them removed the green tint went away.

Ya I know what your talking about. I welded with the ones on the inside for a little while and decided to clean it one day as the smoke had fogged everything up and so I removed them all, after that, my helmet still had a slightly green hue.

@@DereksWorkshopAndProjects well if you can see the bead no harm no foul I guess. Also, mine was the cheaper Chicago Electric one too. Believe it or not that thing has been working good for almost two years now. For 35 bucks you can't beat it. I am upgrading my helmet to the Titanium today. Going to go get it at lunch. Thanks for the video Derek, keep up the good work man!!

I have a couple different welders. It was probably either a Century FC-90 which is a less expensive flux core welder, or a Forney 140mp which is a multi process welder and I would be MIG welding with that machine (gas shielded solid core). Thanks for watching, hope the welder works out for you!

What you need to mention is that it’s a disposable helmet. The batteries are not replaceable. I bought this helmet about 4 years ago. I don’t weld a lot but when I do weld I need a helmet that works. This past summer I needed to weld something and this helmet no longer worked. That’s when I found out the helmet did not have a replaceable battery. So in the garbage it went and I had to buy a new helmet. I ended up getting the green titanium helmet which is night and day difference.

Ya, that’s a short coming of a lot of these cheap helmets.

can u explain the function of the knobs my helmet takes abt 10 seconds to switch back from dark to light,, I want it to switch back to light alot faster.
@gurjindersingh199
@gurjindersingh199 3 жыл бұрын
delay is how long it takes to go from dark state to light state after the arc is extinguished. You want the delay as much as possible to protect eyes from the light coming of the glowing red metal.

Good one, Derek. I got an Antra which I bought on Amazon, carbon copy basically of yours as far as the tech goes, and yes same problem with the screen getting dirty behind the outside plastic shield. It's a pita to have to pop the little shield off, wipe off everything inside and all that...would be nice if there was some kind of gasket there to keep from dust and such getting behind there like that.
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, a gasket, maybe this is a mod we could work on together and try to come up with the best solution and make a video on it tagging each other?
@pondacres
@pondacres 3 жыл бұрын
Derek, I was thinking to just throw some tape around each edge, seal it off completely. Wouldn't be need to be popping the shield off to wipe it anyways, if no dust gets in there in the first place.
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects 3 жыл бұрын
I see. I was thinking using some gasket material. Either thin strips of foam or some sort of rubber.

Hey did you ever take off that green plastic from your helmet lens ? I did on accident I don’t know if that’s bad or not ?
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects 2 жыл бұрын
I know there was like a blue plastic covering when it was brand new or something like that on both sides and I removed it but I don't remember the plastic being green, and the green tint to the lens never seemed removable to me. If you removed the plastic that is easily removable from when you buy it, you definitely didn't do anything wrong.

I paid $110 dollars on a hobart welding helmet. I did it because my welding instructor said the harbor freight will quit working fast and they won't auto darken anymore. This can happen but you can replace the battery last I knew. Anyway I hate that helmet. I have to take it all the way off just to change it to grind. Because the switch is on the inside. It has darkness 9-13 dial as well but I have to inside for the grind feature. Also it has the same problem with getting dirty super easy.

I’ll put it this way... my younger brother did welding school in high school as dual enrollment. He was told by one of his instructors to not buy a Harbor Freight helmet. He bought a $150 Hobart. When he was done he said he wished he just bought a Harbor Freight helmet. Particularly the one I bought, as other students had them and they lasted the whole 2 year school and longer just fine.

I mean, I don’t want to make any promises, it’s entirely at your own discretion, but if I had less than $50 to spend on a welding helmet I’d buy it again. If I was going to welding school and new I would be doing this for a long period of time I’d look for something maybe a little better. Check out the YesWelder welding helmets too.

My chicago electric helmet does great as well unless I'm working with thin sheet metal. All the rapid starts and stops kind of out pace my helmet but so far that's the only flaw I've ran into with it

When you bring it up, I actually have noticed that myself when I'm trying to fill in a hole and Im doing short little bursts its seems to struggles to hold the shade with the arcs. That being said, I've still never been flashed, its still been totally safe. I think you said it best... the helmet just kind of gets outpaced.

I had the Cheap HF helmet. It worked good for about 4 years. The batteries aren't replaceable. The factory installed batteries are sitting on the shelf going dead in the box. I bought another helmet and it was DOA. I returned it. I ended up buyIng a new one on EBay for about $40.00. Replaceable batteries, full size screen, and full adjustments. The CCP knockoff market is cutthroat. Once US Mtg sent the first operation over there everything, and I mean everything, they took with them was copied and is now being made by slave labor. Patents mean nothing. Once you set up the operation it is cheap to just run it. Hi end, low end, one plant makes it all.

Yes, pretty much from now on I won't recommend a helmet unless its got a replaceable battery. I hate the "throw away" intentions from the manufacturer of these helmets and I don't want to continue to recommend them. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
