Chicago finally win in Houston! Bulls @ Rockets 1995-96

When they came to Houston in January 1996, The Bulls hadn't won there in several years. They had yet to become 'The 72-win Bulls.' In fact they weren't even the defending champs 'cos they had gotten whooped by Shaq and Penny in the Conference Semis the previous year.
The World Title was held by the Houston Rockets (even though looking at their uniforms you'd never think it!). The common belief before June 1996, was that Hakeem Olajuwon was 'the best player in the NBA,' and that if Chicago was gonna win the title they were gonna have to go through Houston.
Knowing what we know now.. it doesn't seem like a big deal. But here, on the night of this game, Michael Jordan and The Bulls had plenty to prove.

The difference of why you started seeing Jordan beat Hakeem late in their careers is because of matchups. By 95-96 MJ had Dennis Rodman while Hakeem didn’t have Vernon Maxwell anymore. Those two players made the biggest difference in their rivalry.

Ha, the reason why Jordan started beating Olajuwon later in his career, has more to do with Olajuwon *and* Drexler's wear and tear and having to carry garbage teams by themselves for years while Jordan had the luxury of having Pippen and Grant, then Rodman on top of adding Kukoc, and defensive stalwart; Ron Harper who was just below Jordan and Clyde in his peak years. In order for Olajuwon to get Drexler, he had to lose Thorpe; who was just as vital to beating Chicago as Maxwell was. Having Maxwell with no Thorpe hurt more than having Thorpe and no Maxwell. When Barkley came, Olajuwon had to lose Horry and Cassell. Olajuwon's career was always about losing a vital piece of his team in order to gain. His 2nd year in the league, he had Sampson, but then lost 2 starters and a 6th man. Now compare that to Jordan, Kobe, Magic, and Lebron who always got help.

I think it's more often that Rodman doesn't get enough credit. Your are right in that possession they showed, Rodman didn't do anything that great, in fact Hakeem got a very good look. But Rodman was much more effective than Longley on him throughout the game. Rodman's court sense and hoops IQ is phenomenal, and I don't think he got enough credit for what the Bulls were able to accomplish from 96-98.

Bulls' backcourt would eat up Clyde and Kenny... But on the other side, Mario Elie and Vernon Maxwell could have been the big star stoppers... Just like what Raja Bell did to Kobe... and Hakeem would definitely be a monster inside... tough to call, but could've been an exciting series...

They only play against each other 2 times a season. The Bulls dominated the Rockets in reg season 5-1from 95 to 96 and that doesnt mean a thing to a Bulls fan, because the Bulls was the team to beat. Just as they were the team to beat from 91 to 93. Utah won 3 games to 1 in reg season during the ones they meet the Bulls in the finals... and that reg season record didnt mean a damn thing to your dad, the Utah Jazz. xD "

Jordan & Phil Jackson both said they was glad the Rockets didn’t make it out the west cause of that Nigerian. 23 is the goat and that was his thoughts. And it was the Sonics who gave us fits. The Jazz got us in 97, but we smashed them twice before that.

No NBA-player would call out a teammate like that if he really didn't deserve it, all Rodman did in the 95-series was to grab rebounds, he didn't play defense on Horry for one sec, Horry bombed 3's all series.

They play 1 game a season there & it's usually during the time when the United Center is unavailable for 2-3 weeks due to the circus & disney on ice. They always played the 3 Texas teams in a row, usually 3 games in 5 nights. Typically it's part of a 10-14 game road trip. Not taking anything away from Houston but if they met in the playoffs the Bulls would take their game up a couple notches. Houston fans always seem to think that the same would happen in the playoffs, I don't think it would be any different then any other finals the Bulls were in.

@@maziosare2515 The Rockets beat the Jazz twice and only lost to the Sonics the first time they faced off because the refs made some bad calls against them the overtime period of G7 in what was a close game. let's settle this Jordan and Olajuwon only faced each other 21 times in the regular season and never in the Playoffs, with Hakeem winning 12 times and Michael winning 9. Of course would have been very good if jordan would have been around , when he left those two years look at the videos on you tube when houston had maxwell on jordan chicago only won 6 games Olajuwon/Sampson duo, the Rockets beat Jordan's Bulls every time they met in the regular season (4 times). Sampson's departure coincides with the Bulls acquiring Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant, thus forming the nucleus of what would become Jordan's first three championship teams. That season, 1987-88, the Bulls sweep the season series against the Rockets., Regardless, they split the next two season series (88-89, 89-90) with the Bulls. , Scottie Pippen stepped up in the 90-91 season and the Bulls win three straight titles. The one team they have a losing record against? Olajuwon's Rockets, which swept them in two of those three seasons. But Hakeem still didn't have a championship team, and they were slowly building up to it with role players like Kenny Smith and Vernon Maxwell, Chicago's hardest matches always came against teams with strong centers , Olajuwon demolishes David Robinson in the Conference Finals and then sweeps Shaq's Magic in the Finals And really, what Olajuwon did in those two seasons isn't much less impressive. He faced off against the three best players at his position in his generation-not three of the best like Alonzo Mourning, Dikembe Mutumbo, and Rik Smits; the three best in Ewing, Robinson, and Shaq-and beats two elite power forwards in Barkley (twice) and Malone. Combine that with Olajuwon What would have happened if things had been slightly different? What if Sampson didn't get injured and that 86 Rockets team didn't implode? Does the Hakeem/Sampson combo go to more Finals and hold off the Jordan/Pippen combo? What if Jordan stayed in 93-94 and they'd run into the Rockets that year in the Finals? Remember, no one since Russell had won three straight until the Bulls did, and no one since Russell had won four straight, certainly not in the postmerger era with salary caps. It's hard to bet against Jordan, but if any team had their number, it would have been those Rockets. What if Jordan came back sooner in 94-95 and had gotten into better basketball shape and figured out a way to beat Shaq's Magic? Do they beat Olajuwon's Rockets, with an aging Clyde Drexler (and would Jordan have gotten into Drexler's head even more)? Or do their weaknesses at the center position rear their ugly heads and get exploited by Olajuwon? Steve Kerr, a member of the second threepeat Bulls, basically said double-teaming Hakeem was impossible and screwed up defensive rotations. Who's on that 94-95 team (no Horace Grant and no Dennis Rodman and no Bill Cartwright) to guard Hakeem? thank you

Even when they were won those 2 championships they weren't that great of a team which is why they had a 6th seed in the west. They were to inconsistent. And you are not beating MJ and the Bulls with as many flaws as Houston had. They lucked up because of MJ retiring. Scottie would have dismantled horry, MJ has an easy 40/50 against maxwell. And we all know what he did to Clyde! Ron Harper would kill Kenny smith. Harp was too big and storming defensively. 5/6 games series especially with the Bulls having home court

Actually the Rockets got the better of the Bulls during Hakeem's peak years during the Bulls first threepeat. The Rocket split with the Bulls in 91, swept them in 92, and split again in 93. There is a reason why the win in this video was a big deal...the Bulls had not won there in a while. The Rockets were easily better than any team the Bulls played in the playoffs during their championship runs. That would have been the one Finals matchup worth remembering like the Celtics/Lakers of the 80s, but it never happened. Oh, and if they had played, the entire Bulls team would have been there.
