Try these delicately sweet mochi rice cakes with origins in Hiroshima but hugely popular in Hawaii. Subscribe for more videos! goo.gl/18SB8p
ハワイでも良く食されるチチダンゴ、家庭で手軽に作ってみましょう。
INGREDIENTS: (makes about 6-8 pieces)
(Double this recipe to make both the pink and white versions)
100 grams or 5/8 cups mochiko flour
60 grams or 5 tbsp granulated sugar
100 cc or 1/2 cup milk
2 tbsp condensed milk
2 tspn honey
red food coloring (for the pink dango)
cornstarch
DIRECTIONS:
Combine the mochiko flour and sugar in a bowl. Add a little milk and stir to combine. Add the rest of the milk and give it a quick mix. Add the condensed milk and honey. Mix until combined. Add a small amount of red food coloring if making the pink version. Mix until smooth and even color. Pour into a saucepan and heat over medium low heat. Stir constantly to prevent the mixture from sticking and burning to the pan. Heat and stir until mixture becomes smooth and sticky. Pour the mixture into a pan dusted liberally with cornstarch. Flatten with a back of a spoon and shape into a square. Let it cool for 5-10 minutes. Trim off the edges to make a nice square shape. Cut into small rectangles. Dust with cornstarch to cover all sides so it's dry to touch. Shake off the excess cornstarch and serve.
*If you are making the white chichi dango like we did, double the recipe above and omit the red food coloring. The steps are exactly the same. Enjoy!

I'm from the island of Oahu. I grew up with mochi and chichi dango (25 yrs ago) sold by local stores that the local's made fresh!😋 Especially around the new year. Down the street near my house, the Japanese Church sold them FRESH during the new year. I miss that... Every time I go home I make sure to buy them by the packs. They are now sold at almost any store where it's made by factories in Honolulu. These delicious treats are favored by Islander's and purchased at anytime, not just special occasions or the new year. I'm gonna try this recipe, l am determined to make this. Mahalo Nui Loa for this video 🤙

I wish my American taste buds could appreciate the delicate flavors of the more traditional types of Japanese, Chinese and Korean sweets and desserts. Much of the Asian cultures diets are extremely sparing on the use of concentrated sources of sweetness and the amounts of sugars in your sweets treats are so low it’s hard for me to appreciate them the way you do. Whenever I have tried mochi type treats or dango or even custard filled steamed buns they seem to be missing something like… more sugar, vanilla and a pinch of salt to anchor and round out the sweetness. But those cultural differences is what makes life so fascinating for me. I appreciate the differences in our dietary preferences and have fun learning what is special to the people in other cultures all over the world whether or not I personally enjoy them. I must say those dango do look really lovely and I know what you mean about the mouthfeel which is so gorgeous, smooth, soft yet with a weight in the mouth that makes the whole experience almost erotic.

Love chichidango. My father would make five large pans worth for New Year’s Day and then would share it with family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and anyone who wanted some. The only difference between his and yours would that each piece was half red and half white, instead of separate.

Another great recipe my lovely friends! It was really surprising and interesting to hear that chi chi dongo is so populous in Hawaii, whilst only available in Hiroshima. You look sooooo much better clean-shaven. :-) I was definitely not a fan of that sparse moustache! (Of course, it's your face and you should do as you like!) The recipe looks terrific. I was thinking it could be cut into different shapes and use different colors depending on the occasion. Great video as always, guys!

What can I use instead of sweetened condensed milk? Looks like a great recipe 👍

Looks pretty in pink ! So, what's the diffference between this dango snack and mochi ? If I skip the condensed milk n add more honey instead, will they still turn out as soft as this ? Great presentation ! Greetings from Indonesia 🙏🇮🇩⚘

I think i'm going to try to dust dessicated coconut on the mocha instead of corn starch! Hopefully it will work!
@TabiEats
@TabiEats 8 жыл бұрын
+alyssa van Yes that might work as well. Let us know hot it turns out. The cornstarch is there just to prevent the mochi from sticking.

Hey guys - awesome recipe! Thank you - I was wondering if this recipe could be used to make mochi balls?
@TabiEats
@TabiEats 7 жыл бұрын
+Brian Wisotzkey hmmm it probably could although it would be on the sweet side and these are a bit softer than the usual mochi. Let me know if you do try.

:) Yep - it was a little too soft... especially with ice cream. However, still tasted delicious. Thanks for the reply!

If you sift your mochiko you might end up with smoother chi chi dango.

We LOVE Chichi Dango! It's always been a huge request from my boys for Boy's Day. Would love to try this but I don't see the recipe. Where would I find it? Mahalo!

looks great :) at the end the look of it reminded me of turkish delight :D do you know the sweet turkish delight? its has a much more clearer color then the rice cake, but the consistency looks the same, kinda :)

Turkish delight is softer to bite through, mochi has more of a gummy texture

+Cat Sieja Yes, kind of like homemade marshmallows but more chewy because, more like a soft mochi. Hope you're enjoying your weekend my friend.

Wonder if we used coconut milk instead of regular milk? Hmmm?
@3pumpkins170

I made this and the texture didn't come out right. I cooked the batter until it's very thick before I poured it onto the flour but the texture was still too soft. Next time I'll just try the recipe where you bake the chichi dango. That seems to be the more correct method. Thanks anyway for posting the video.
