50 Acres & a Cabin, I wish I could say that has always been the case but we made the mistake years ago of just trusting him and needless to say his name was chicken killer for awhile (not humorously either). We like to free range our birds so it needed to be done but it took about 6 months of solid training to get him to understand they are part of the pack and higher up than him. He lets them eat out of his food bowl now and lays with them but I will probably mention it at some point in a future video since I know other people have this issue as well.

@@donaldmiller8629 I was ok at training my lab in some ways, in others not so much. I never could get her to behave on walks despite a lot of different techniques. She was never in a position to kill any chicks but I knew her personality and she'd have played them to death. She lived to be 14 and a half years old and passed away almost 1 year ago.

We were just thinking that it would be prudent when it gets a bit drier to run conduit in trenches in the ground (you have a back hoe) and pull through some electrical cables for your chickens and your quanset workshop as well as the other moveable storage unit (was going to be the chicken coop) so when you hook up the generator and the solar battery system it all ties together. Just a thought.

Like the natural lighting from the ceiling bathing the inside of the coop (and the generous headroom); I didn't know about adding ACV to the water for the chickens, but think you are giving them a great start; its nice to see the chickens being given the 5 star treatment! Hopefully the chickens won't sleep on top of the nest boxes (where the cat was in the video) but on the 2x4's. Appreciate the tour and allowing us to see the chick transition/setup.

Great chicken house you have there. My only criticism is the metal shutters. They tend to radiate unwanted heat into the house in summer, and rob the inside heat when you want it in winter. Otherwise, a job to be proud of. Thanks for sharing it.

So from the cable show of the family farm in Alaska, the way they provide heat to the coup during the winter is to have a couple of buckets with some flat river rock and they set it on their wood stove during the day and it heats up then they have one that hangs in the center of the coup for about 10 to 12 hours and then they switch them out and the rocks just release their heat into the coup and keeps the coup at about 50 degrees. Now I will say their coup compared to yours is a slum lord's special. So my suggestion for the coup would be to insulate the wall that gets the brunt of the storms hitting the coup. So if they are coming out of the north and east I would do the north wall and the east wall,

I would strongly suggest keeping the window covers in through the winter, otherwise you are going to struggle to keep it warm enough, even with a lamp. Not sure what your winter water plan is but I've been using a 5 gallon bucket hanging with nipples on the sides with a simple aquarium submersible heater. We hit as low as 30 below (we're in Wasilla) and it never froze. We don't have any heat lamp, etc in the coop. (Worked great for the last 2 winters)--although I would use a lamp if i put them outside before 5 to 6 weeks.
@SimpleLivingAlaska
@SimpleLivingAlaska 5 жыл бұрын
Erin Owens, we do have a heat lamp on them at night and during the day right now since the temps dropped down. I'm guessing that will be the case until they get a little older. I am thinking we will have those covers on quite a bit during the winter to help with snow blowing in, we get to around -30 here as well and I love the idea of your waterer system. We are fond of the nipple waterers however I am not sure we will be able to run a submersible water heater. We have a small solar system so every thing adds up, we do plan to have a non heat lamp for daylight and are planning to change water out multiple times a day (boil on the woodstove), although I imagine this will get quite exhaustive and living through that cold this past winter I must say even warm water still freezes pretty fast! Thanks for the tips, we will look into the aquarium heater :)
