Howdy guys and gal, we turned chicken mess into chicken soup in this vid. Our CNC grinder has been on the fritz and in a desperate attempt to get back up and going we drug this old Armstrong Profiler outa the weeds and resurrected it into a nice rig. This vid shows the results, we are proud of it.. www.loggerwade.com/

I worked for over 25 years running a manual surface grinder. If you want to run dry you're better off going with an open grain wheel. I don't know what you are using now but we normally used a 46H. I'd highly recommend contacting a wheel manufacturer and pick their brain on it. Norton was the big boys but their quality has gone down hill and wheels varied so much in structure, I hated using them. I'd suggest Radiac Abrasives. They were always the same and held up great. I have no affiliation with them but they made my job easier. The company I worked for was pressured by Norton to get 100% of their wheel supply and the workers fought to keep the Radiacs there. Their wheels were a little more expensive and the plant manager brought that up ro me. I then informed him they lasted about 3 times longer so they were saving him money. LOL

We have a Radiac Abrasives wheel plant here locally and the grinding wheels are very good. I had a good friend that was a higher up there and he kept me stocked up on all different types and sizes of wheels. He passed away a few years ago but im still stocked up,,,for now.

I run a Cooks cat claw sharpener. Cam driven and as long as you keep your rock shaped you get the same grind everytime. Nothing more frustrating then swapping out a band it cuts just as bad ad the one you took off. I like the repeatability of a cam sharpener. Have to agree older is better in alot of applications.

Wade, reminds me of the cars and trucks nowadays. They run great when they do, but when they break down, oh my, they be very pricey and the shade tree mechanics can't work on em like they used to. Just look at all the cars sitting in lots because they can't get the computer chips they need. Great vidja and thanks for including us. John here, from the back-roads of Northeastern Tennessee.

I don't remember if your pulling power off the grid or if you are running generators, but if your burning up motors a quick check on the voltage and hertz going to the motors may find a crudded up connection causing a start of a problem

Wade, seriously, good on ya for thinking outside the box and going back to ole reliable. I love modern and up to date CNC stuff. It makes manufacturing a consistent product easier, less expensive, (in the long run) BUT, the upkeep and down time with the CNC stuff can be a nightmare. Every machine is different. If given the choice between an old all hand made Gibson guitar or a new modern mostly CNC shaped model, I'm going hand made 100/100 times. Modern technology is wonderful but it can be an absolute time trap keeping it running as it was meant to.

Wade like you said, the old ways are always better. Less things go wrong and like you said, a can won't go bad unless it totally worn out. And even if it does you can always repair it. All this mechanical, I'm going stuff. Put in computers. I don't work on cars anymore because of computers. I hate him give me an old car. That's got points and condensation. A car parade or not to make it run. Won't give me any of the computers and if you injected in all that didn't build. Jack didn't know that alright. This is Bob from Vero Beach Florida. God bless you Stacey, and you have a great day.

In the end you will be better off, automation now is meant for speed and mass production. I mean you've said it yourself the new trucks coming out don't have the build quality of the 70's but they have the tech to make em more powerful. Same goes to your business. You need a machine that does its job, is reliable and can keep production from coming to a stand still while you have open time to see how you can make that machine produce better quality. That's all that matters. Great video on a topic a lot of companies face problems with every year.

I agree with you. Things years ago were built to last. Now we have the industry BIO syndrome. Built In Obsolescence. This just doesn’t restrict itself to parts that are going to last 2000 operations. The machines are built in an over complicated way that repair is either too expensive or too complex for the ordinary person. Get a new one! The cam is a perfect solution for this operation. It’s predictable! The workings of a clock or watch are basic but they combine to be a precise and consistent unit which is what you want . Timepieces are tried and tested by this stage !

When you are running equipment a long way from any support/ parts, then simple & easy to fix usually works best. Armstrong Blue appears to still make the old style band saw sharpeners. The newer models have a few more add-ons (grinding wheel shapers etc). The Swedish Steel company making steel with hydrogen (rather than coking coal) claim the steel properties are better, so the swedish saw steel could one day get a little bit better to handle the dry grinding? Electrical Power. Monitoring equipment is affordable if you are using a commercial amount of power. The power companies/ ev charger co are putting in batteries with the chargers in places where there is insufficient line power. A battery pack could give you time to switch off equipment rather than run electric motors under load in a brownout situation.

At 19:25 you see the blade clamp leaning to the right as the paw indexes the tooth. Problem is the stone is coming up the back of the tooth and grinding the tip of the tooth at an angle to the body of the band. You really want the top of the tooth perpendicular to the body of the blade. The lean may not be enough to cause major issues, but if the saw starts to wonder more than normal , I'd address the clamp first..
