Matt and Liz Bruenig stop by to talk KIDS. First, Matt walks us through what’s going on with the stimulus package, AEI’s insistence that mothers must never stop working, and why liberals are addicted to tax credits. Then we get mad at the damn crotchspawn with r/childfree, read some dear Prudie letters, and finally hold children accountable for long history of abusive behavior.

We’ll be collecting them into a top list and...I don’t know, doing something with them next week. Probably putting into a youtube radio stream. I’m just having fun here:

I don't think it's very honest to simply equate the opinion that overpopulation is a problem that ought to be dealt with on the one hand and the idea that some particular type of people is not worthy to procreate on the other hand. Moreover, it seems that what statistically is most effective in lowering reproductive numbers in a community is the introduction of opportunities for women to get free education. The problem rather seems to be this tendency to try and solve all problems by repression and even punishment and to morally wash ones hands of the problem by scapegoating categories of people who really are the most vulnerable to the problem's negative effects. Yes, part of the problem seems to be lack of education, but that's because it happens to coincide with the lack of control over one's own life that comes with poverty. Maybe instead of investing so much energy into defending the position that overpopulation could not possibly be a problem, in any way, ever and that claiming the opposite is always just a reactionary tendency, we should invest energy in showing that solutions to that actually coincide with more freedom and mutual support.

So... is there like, a movement that the podcast is denigrating by pretending that the population crisis isn't a thing?
@wishcraft4u2
@wishcraft4u2 3 жыл бұрын
@@adamp3223 I think it's intended to criticize some definite reactionary groups of people like ecofascists etc... But, as I already stated, I think in principle it's not a reactionary thing if people argue it is a problem. Especially since there are very non-reactionary things to do that could have a negative effect on population growth and in fact it seems reactionary forces play a part in population growth as they enable the underlying conditions. And at the end of the day I think we need to have an honest discussion about things like, sustainable energy budgets and so on. It's a bit cheap to simply waive all discussion by maintaining the only problem is overhead created by how wasteful capitalism is etc...

38:30 People in the "global south" have tiny carbon footprints but that is closely related to the fact that they are extremely poor. If you are socialist you are fighting for everyone's right to be allocated a fair share of resources, you should not make any argument based on the assumption they will stay poor forever. Everyone should try to have less kids.

You know there's like, 100 companies that are responsible for 70% of global CO2 emissions, right? And also that carbon footprint correlates really strongly with wealth (as in, the richer you are, the more you emit)? If you wanna stop climate change, that's the sorta stuff that you need to focus on. Average people having or not having kids, even in the global north, basically makes 0 difference.

@@fohkukohgeki The whole point of socialism is so the average person can live a better life. Blaming "wealth" (people in developed nations who live modest lifestyles but are in the global top 10% because the rest of humans are horrendously poor) completely defeats the purpose. It's not comparatively rich people who should be poorer, it's poor people who should be richer. People having kids absolutely makes a difference, and will have a direct impact on per capita share of our extremely finite resources if the "socialist revolution" actually succeeds and eliminates inequality. Everyone should have less kids.
