CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Andy (Alex Vincent) and Karen (Catherine Hicks) torch Chucky in the fireplace.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Child's Play seems to have been concocted by a parent who went berserk after standing in line for hours on end to purchase a Cabbage Patch doll in the early 1980s. The film opens with serial killer Brad Dourif taking refuge in a doll factory. Dourif is killed by the cops, but not before he has invoked a voodoo curse which transfers his soul into one of the dolls. That particular doll, nicknamed Chuckie, is unwittingly purchased by Catherine Hicks for her son Alex Vincent. Several murders occur shortly thereafter; all evidence points to Alex, who insists that his cherub-faced doll is responsible. Detective Chris Sarandon, the man responsible for Dourif's death, doesn't swallow Alex's story, but he agrees to investigate because he's sweet on Alex's mom. The slasher-flick ending of Child's Play would seem to have settled Chuckie's hash for good and all, but guess again--the film spawned numerous sequels.

I met the actor for Andy at a convention once. I think he was a little disappointed fewer people were checking out his booth since Peter Mayhew had the longest line. Overall he wasn't very talkative and sounded pretty depressed. I told him how I liked his portrayal in Cult of Chucky and how Andy could be another antihero like Ash from Evil Dead, and he just said "Yeah maybe.". Frankly that was his response to a majority of my comments. I wonder if he's still like that.

Frankly, I met Alex twice both at the 2012 and 2013 Spooky Empire Horror Conventions down in Orlando, Fla. He is a very positive, sharp, friendly and down to earth guy. He is juggling a lot in the past few years with his band and book, so he may have just been having an off day. However, I can assure you he is a real stand up guy. I am Facebook friends with him and I follow some of his political discussions. He also just bought a home, so that can be both amazing and extremely stressful, especially in our climate. He is a good guy, no pun intended. I mean he killed Chucky not once or twice, but three times.

We all tend to forget that actors are just like us, they've also got their struggles, even their off-days. I wouldn't take it to heart. Never let first impressions judge a person's character. If they seem like they're a bit down, lighten up their day with a friendly gesture.

It helps that his appearance goes through a visual metamorphosis throughout the film. He appears more human than doll which adds a layer of uncanny valley to his creep factor.

It was even funnier in the French dubbed version, which is the version of this movie I've seen for the first time as a kid: Chucky delivers the line but then the screaming was kept in Brad Dourif's voice, creating a weird contrast as his voice changes during the scene in an instant.

One thing I still love about this movie is how, after Chucky comes alive and attacks Karen, the doll subtly and progressively changes in appearance during the rest of the movie. The doll skin becomes less plastic looking and textured, the hair gets more stringy/greasy, he develops freaking eyebrows, and his eyes and teeth even become more human looking. I can appreciate small details like that.

Fun fact: when chucky was burning it was actually a stuntman. (all the other parts was the animitronic, its only the stuntman when chucky is running fast or burning)

You know, I love how far the actual animatronics have come over the years, Chucky looks honestly really good in the new series. But there's just something about his look in this movie, especially towards the end, that I've thought made it his best. The receding hairline, the small lumps around the cheeks, the actual real eyebrows. He honestly looks like something stuck between being a doll and an actual person that makes his super creepy.
