I had to go back to work when my boys were almost three and almost two years old. The amount of guilt I got from Christian moms in my friend group was insane. I got reactions ranging from polite but clearly displeased silence to, "I would never let someone else raise my children". I WANT to be a stay at home mom, but life circumstances haven't allowed for that. My kids only go to preschool/daycare for three days a week. I get off work at 2:30 in the afternoon and spend as much time as I possibly can with my boys. I'm so thankful that at least my own mom has been fully supportive and encouraging. Thank you for this discussion.

I think it just depends where you live. Where I'm from staying home with your kids til almost 3 and almost 2 would be considered a long time! I stay home with my 2 year old and 3 month old, and I feel different/judged for not having a desire to go back to work. You can't win Mama! All you can do is do what feels right or what works for your family, don't worry about what other people think x

As a mom living in South Africa it is the norm for us to put our babies in daycare as young as 4 months and then we work 8+ hours a day. This video has been so helpful knowing that the feeding/sleeping schedule at night is something I am getting right! But also our schools are so amazing because it is just what most moms have to do here and kids get homecooked meals, healthy snacks and naps at school. Mom guilt is so real and it is helpful to hear that there is always something we can do to "compensate" for what life is causing us to have to do.

I grew up in a lower income family, I definitely realize by high school (4 years ago) that my own mom didn’t know me. Because she let the system raise me and was constantly away. The school system 100 percent teaches kids to remain silent and even to the point where they are silent when they are being took advantage of or disrespected. I’m still as a young adult learning how to speak up for myself and not allowing people to dictate how I should feel about things of things I should do. I also believe it goes further than just people of authority but people in general. We are taught to stay in a child’s place and remain quiet.

I found this so amazing. We went through the same thoughts before making a decision. It ultimately came down to we wanted her to socialise. She has loads of cousins her age but we live in a two income house and her cousins are far so. She had a bit of a rough start but has been going 2 years and has settled right in. I think for her and us it was the right decision and we love the place she goes to.

Thank you ladies for bringing the nuance to this conversation. I’ve been debating staying at home with my 1 year old and soon to be newborn. Right now I have my 1 year old at an at home care 6 hours a day, I start my workday early and end at 3 to pick him up early, so far it’s working for us but I would love to be able to work from home once baby comes, and with back to office mandates that seems more and more impossible

I live in France, and my two boys (twins) are going to school (Ecole Maternelle, I don’t know if it’s like pre school in the US) in September they will be almost 3 years old. It’s mandatory here, I am actually really happy they will be going as we don’t know anyone in the city where we live. It’s will be great for them to socialise and make friends.

Another daycare assessment question that I have found to be important (after some struggles at a previous daycare) - How many times in the last 3/6/12 months have you closed the center or a classroom outside of planned holidays/closures? Different daycares have varying philosophies on weather related closures or have staffing related closures that are extremely disruptive for working parents.

How can I get the question list for a daycare? I would really like a written question sheet to take and interview a potential daycare for my child…can you send me the list or direct me to a site?

Congratulations for the podcast ! However, I'm not sure to agree with the author of the first book your mention. In high-income families, parents can also be very busy (and rely a lot on childcare), not because they need money, but because they do not want to take care of their kids themselves. Those high-income parents might want to travel, have fun, or stay late at the office (by choice), and their kids can have huge difficulties in asserting themselves too. It seems to me like it's a matter of education - and not of money at all.

Yes high income families can be very busy, but they generally they have more time than lower income families.

Yes, Headstart preschools are funded centers and are geared towards low income families. At least in Missouri, they are also connected to the YWCA and have wrap around services (medical, clothing, utility assistance, etc) for moms, parents, older children. At least this was Missouri’s Head Start programs when I was a classroom intern. I also want to add to the book Jess mentioned. I recently watched a discussion about this study on low income vs affluent children how it relates to race. The speaker discussed white affluent children vs low income children of color, specifically black and or immigrant children who have a lack of voice in medical and school settings due to their parents and generational oppression and being forced to be deferential to authority.

This is so true, as a black young woman/mom. Our community raise kids to “shut up” most of the time, especially in poverty. They have some very abusive generational methods of raising kids

Mummy care is always the best. If you want your child to have second best then send them to childcare.
