About the speaker :
Dr. Yaron Brook (M.B.A., University of Texas at Austin; Ph.D., Finance, University of Texas at Austin) is the executive director of the Ayn Rand Institute and a leading advocate of Rand's ideas. A former finance professor, he speaks internationally on such topics as the causes of the financial crisis, the morality of capitalism, and ending the growth of the state. Yaron is a columnist at Forbes.com, and his articles have been featured in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Investor's Business Daily, and many other publications. A frequent guest on a variety of national television programs, he is co-author of Neoconservatism: An Obituary for an Idea and contributing author of Winning the Unwinnable War: America's Self-Crippled Response to Islamic Totalitarianism. His newest book, Free Market Revolution: How Ayn Rand's Ideas Can End Big Government, co-authored with Don Watkins is now available. To follow Yaron and see his most current activities, please check out Yaron Brook and Don Watkin's blog Laissez-Faire: The Uncompromised Case for Capitalism.
Born and raised in Israel, Yaron served as a first sergeant in Israeli military intelligence and earned a BSc in civil engineering from Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel. Yaron admits to being a socialist until the age of 16--then he read Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. Despite his best efforts to poke holes in Rand's arguments, he couldn't, and went on to become a student of Rand's philosophy, Objectivism.
In the late 1980s, Yaron and his wife started thinking about where in the world they would want to live their lives and raise a family. Where could they find the greatest amount of freedom and the greatest amount of opportunity? The answer was clear, so in 1987 they emigrated to the United States. He would go on to become an American citizen in 2003.
Yaron received his MBA and PhD in finance from the University of Texas at Austin. For seven years he was an award-winning finance professor at Santa Clara University, and in 1998 he cofounded a financial advisory firm, BH Equity Research, of which he is presently managing director and chairman.
While in America, Yaron continued studying Ayn Rand's philosophy. In the mid-1990s, he joined the Ayn Rand Institute's new educational program, the Objectivist Graduate Center. It was in the OGC (now expanded into the Objectivist Academic Center) that Yaron deepened his knowledge of Objectivism, thanks to the efforts of teachers such as Rand's heir, Leonard Peikoff, as well as leading Objectivist thinkers Harry Binswanger and Peter Schwartz.
It was also during this time that Yaron launched Lyceum International, an organization that for many years ran conferences on Objectivism.
In 2000 Yaron left teaching to become the executive director of the Ayn Rand Institute and go-to source for laissez-faire policy. Yaron's field of speciaties include Objectivism (the philosophy of Ayn Rand), capitalism, finance, business ethics, venture capital, economics and foreign policy.
Yaron lives in Orange County, California.

I am on the autism spectrum (im high functioning) and if i pass that down to my kid and they get it worse than me, I'll have to take care of my kid for the rest of THEIR life! and if my kid is high functioning, they are gonna have dreams of their own, move out the house, start a family. Children don't owe their parents anything, you chose to create a life, it either goes through pain or it goes through a good life, which one happens is always on the parent, even if you aren''t the one giving them pain because you made the life in an envirenment and you decided to protect it or not, obviously if you didn't expect it or couldn't prevent something it's not your fault but if you put it somewhere or made it and decided to not help it you made a life and decided to put it in a place where it would experience pain, that's on you. If the kid is a good person and you've treated it well you deserve good consequences, so you will continue the way you are but it doesn't owe it to you because it didn't ask for it, no matter what it is, if a person doesn't ask for something but it is given to them they are not in dept, even if it's something good, maybe they wanted to do things on their own, become capable, maybe they feel like they deserve bad things and disliked the good, it is only how the person perceive things that measures what is good or bad, good and bad is subjective, you can't decide what they think, don't be a parent because you're so pathetic that you need to feel above someone and feel in control because you're just destroying something and proving yourself weak. The only thing that happens is that if they perceive it as good yet are bad, they become something, it's who they are, whether they think good things need to be preserved and continued or if they only care about self gain and don't have a purpose, they just care about themselves because they are nothing without it. It creates them, but if you do something and expect osmething back, you prove you only did it to feel validated and good and would never sacrifice anything or do anything hard for it, you don't care about its purpose or impact, just yourself.

@@Broomful A sense of confirmation that "you are ok", hugs, smiles....such kind of warmth in interactions. Tone of voice, choice of words etc. Kids need to be loved and not every parent can do that. And kids have to expectation, naturally I guess, to looked at and treated with affection. And I think we can love! In my case I had always lived with my mother and sister. When I was very small (around 6 years old) my mother used to hit me with her belt when I was "misbehaving". Later on she stopped, except on one occasion that I was around 15 when she slapped my mouth after I referred to my absent father as "that old man" in front of her. I remember that I had a sense of property over her and that I would become jealous when she didn't pay attention to me or when she was dating. I remember her being kind to me but severe every time I wasn't complying with her expectations, and it wasn't really her expectations, it was what she thought "acceptable by others". It was much later in life, at the age of 29, when I read Atlas Shrugged and saw the proper concept of what love was that I realized that I never loved my mother because she didn't have the traits of character that I identified as valuable and desirable, besides, she never acted in a way to deserve my admiration, she always took it for granted as my duty as a son. Today I've been living away from her and everybody else, in another continent, for 5 years. I don't miss my family, I don't feel guilt and I don't feel love for them. One of my goals is to meet new people that I can admire and respect, not because they expect me to do so automatically and blindly, but because they have the traits of character that I value.

As a character designer /visual development artist after I graduated from Vancouver film school in 2019 while I wanted to start and create my portfolio so that I can get a job easily and get noticed. My parents often try to step me away from my portfolio telling me to give up and be practical just apply and network people without a portfolio because negative people who work in the animation industry but doing practical technical stuff like vfx and 3D animation who are my parents contacts from family friends who constantly tell my parents it will never happen because concept art is difficult job to get and I am wasting time on just chasing my silly dream and only apply as a 3D animation or a vfx person. This discouraging me and made me depressed and so I overcame it and so I ignored them and worked hard on my portfolio developed it more and started applying for jobs and got freelance gigs, watch your videos and motivate myself more and find my happiness. But many years later in 2022 I became a senior character designer/ visual development artist(concept artist) in an animation company in Toronto working on an animation feature film collaborating with great people and making friends with positive people and starting to get noticed on Instagram because I was posting personal projects and doing a couple of fan art.

Like perhaps I was supposed to make them feel better before I got a chance to feel good myself. Objectivism precedes modern libertarianism. Also, atheism is not a philosophy. It has nothing to do with taking care of your parents or not ...

Well, yes it does. Religion teaches that children should obey and take care of their parents. An atheist is more likely to see that that is bull.

Yeah often when people want kids they treat it as “I want this new car, I want this new Phone.” They are not realizing the kids as human beings which is probably the main issue if not you can clarify more to me and to others who join this conversation.

You don’t owe your parents anything. As soon as you say some shit like that. People would bring up the shit like “your mother could’ve aborted you” or “your mother could’ve swallowed you”. It’s their responsibility to take care of a child as soon as they make the decision on having a child. Responsibility shouldn’t be awarded. For a parent to raise a child to make them (the child) feel like they should owe their parents is PATHETIC. your supposed to take care of a child. (If u decided on having one) or if It was a accident and you didn’t abort it.

This is pure Libertarian thought, in my opinion. Atheism and the question of whether or not to take care of your parents when they are old are issues to be worked out be each Libertarian person on their own. Apart from that, I agree wholeheartedly with what he says. If only it weren't so lucrative to use govt for ends other than those laid out in the Constitution. And yes, govt, I don't care if you read this message.

And then there are those people who say abortion is bad even when they know that the only reason of an abortion is because the person doesn't want a child. And when such people have the child the didn't want they're suppossed to love them. Where do people get off being hypocrites?

people need to think a little harder about this matter. they need to stop being delusional and thinking they live in a stupid fairy tale or in disney world. one of the MAIN reasons why people have kids is to have someone to take care of them when old. basically a retirement plan. of course. they also do not want to be alone. that sounds very altruistic doesn't it? in fact there are no no selfish reasons to have a kid or, better said, to force someone into existence. people are completely disconnected from reality. wishful thinking is preferred at all times.

I have the same view and I think it's more moral than guilt. I don't want to take care of my mother when she's old because I "owe" her. I'd like to help her because I love her. Indeed, I help her when I can now, not out of some moral debt, but because I love her. This is also why I hate parents that go "I put food on the table and clothes on your back. You think I don't care about you because I'm not nice to you?" Well, all of that in the former half is MANDATORY, by the state if it's a developed country, and by reality as a consequence of the choices you made. Love cannot be imposed legally. You knew the deal. Now certainly other less developed nations have their children never think of this, and in the rare occasions that they do, it's blasphemy and is shut down at every turn. I never thought of it growing up in Asia and only realised it growing up in North America.

It doesn't seem quite right. Why would I not owe my life to those who saved me? Brought me into existence and then kept me alive. Literally saved me from immediate death at times. They've done everything. Even if only the bare minimum for survival I would be dead without them, so therefore why would I not owe them my life?

Because you didn't ask. for. all of those things that they did for you. They were the givers and. you're the. receiver. They're not suppose to expect. anything back from you. However, If you choose to owe them your life then that's your choice. It's like if someone bought you a gift randomly. Are you obligated to get them something back? No. But its the nice thing to do. Same thing with your parents. You dont ow them anything for bringing you into the world. BUT if you have a good relationship with them and you feel as tho you owe them your life then by all means.

@@JNgo303 You really are a horrible person. even though a person didn't ask for all the good things his/ her parents did for him/her,still he/she did benefit from all the good things his/her parents did for him/her,such as the parents gave their kids a home, foods, water, etc. for so many years. So, kids do owe their parents A LOT. Your parents are very unlucky to have a horrible person, like you,as their child.

They brought you into life without your consent, so you don't owe them anything for that. They obligated themselves, when they put you into the world, to keep you healthy and alive. You sound like someone who has had loving parents, and you WANT to do things for them. That is a good thing. No one on here is saying that you should not give love back to your loving parents. I know if I had had loving parents I would have done ANYTHING for them.

@@jennyclark6183 First of all,my parents aren't very loving. They quarrel with me often. My mother beats me often. My father sometimes beats me. However,my parents have always taken care of me. They gave me foods, water, house, etc. I'm 29 years old and I have always lived with my parents. Every kid in my country lives with his/her parents until he/she gets married. Anyways,a few years ago,one day, while my father went outside our house,my brother and my mother beat my leg with a stick so hard that my leg bled. My mother once told me that she doesn't like my maternal cousin's paternal cousin. My brother and my mother beat me because I told my maternal cousin that my mother doesn't like my maternal cousin's paternal cousin. Then my maternal cousin told her father what I had told her. That's why her father was very angry. That's why my mother and my brother beat me. I didn't eat or drink anything for three days because my brother and my mother beat me. Then on the fourth day, I ate food and water. My mother even beat me with a stick, when I was around five years old only because I wasn't a good student. Still,I forgive my parents. I always take care of them. I make spicy tea for my father twice every day. I make spicy tea for my mother sometimes. I often cook rice for my parents. I feed my parents their medicines. I always take care of my family. I'm sure your parents have never beaten you. Even if they did,you should forgive them because they are your family and also because they took care of you for so many years. They fed you, raised you, sent you to school, gave you a house to live in,etc. Remember their favors on you. There are some bad parents, who abort their kids. Remember, your parents didn't abort you, even though they could have. They allowed you to live. That's why you owe all the happiness, that you have experienced in your life,to your parents. So,you owe a lot to your parents and that is the truth. Plus, your life is definitely better than the lives of lots of other kids, whose parents aborted them or didn't take care of them. So,you are lucky. However, you are very ungrateful to your parents. That is terrible. I hope one day you have kids and you take care of them for lots of years and I hope they tell you that they owe you nothing. Then how would you feel? You evil, selfish bitch!

Mista, that makes no sense at all. First off, atheism is a lack of theistic belief, it's not a belief itself. Secondly, being an atheist does not mean being a nihilist. Ayn Rand was positively obsessed with the subject of morality and values, and yes, she was an atheist. We have values, morals, ethics, sound reasoning/logic & philosophy. No sky emperor required.

Your have a obligation to your children. You have a obligation to teach them right from wrong, to prepare them for life on their own, to get them to school and back, to clothe and feed them. But giving tasks or chores is part of preparing them for the future. And respect goes both ways. You not obligated to buy them a phone, a car or even a bike for that matter. So yes, if they want more than the basics they must earn it. They can do that by getting a job or doing chores or whatever you agree to. They do not have the right the right to sit in front of the TV and do nothing. It must be a 2 way street otherwise they will fail in life.
