Greetings scholars!
How is a dog in the grass similar to a man laughing under bamboo? No this is not a Zen riddle, but rather the somewhat confusing etymology of 笑 "Smile, laugh". #Justice4GrassDoggo

Everybody gansta until the writers replaces the dog (犬) with a phonetic component that's literally just a dude running (夭)

Amazing content, thank you! I’ve been binging your channel from the moment I found it. Since my first weeks of learning Chinese, I’m bemused by 什; 麽; their alternative and obsolete forms (found in the Wiktionary); and why in all hells and heavens do they together make sense as a pronoun for plenty of functions and meanings. The more I think about it, the more I become discombobulated. Should you someday make an etymology video on this subject, I would be so happy! I’ve found your channel while looking for 什麽 etymology resources in non-Chinese languages.

Honestly, ⿱艹犬 should’ve been brought back, it would’ve made more sense next to 哭 too, as they’d share the same bottom component! PS: 哭 always looked like a sad, teary face to me lol. P-PS: When I was little, it was explained to me that 夭 in 笑 meant “stillborn baby”… I must’ve been 7, and I remember thinking “Yoo the ancient chinese were kinda sadistic…”

so how do all of the radicals in 猫 relate to cat?
@SwedishSinologyNerd
@SwedishSinologyNerd Жыл бұрын
貓 is from 豸 "(feline) beast" (Ma Xulun suggested it's the original character for cat, which would make it phonetic in 貌 but I digress) and 苗 phonetic, the word itself is likely onomatopoeic, although some commentators claimed that 苗 is also signific ("a beast hiding in grass" or even "a beast with short fur (that resembles grass sprouts)"), the modern standardized character 猫 replaces 豸 with 犭"dog" which is another common radical for any beast (though originally only dog-looking beasts, including simians). Hope this helps!
