Since I'm using seal script while writing it's quite interesting that I can guess the origins of some characters just from their form.

@@SwedishSinologyNerd yeah recently I got a fasciation for the nine fold script seal. That one is the hardest for me to understand. I noticed that it is still used especially by the Taoist priests on different fu talismans and other objects 🤔

Thank you! It took me a while to warm up to sound glosses but since I want to give a glimpse into the Chinese traditional psyche as well as the factual origin of characters I decided I'd best start adding it into my vids ^^

For this character, is there any connection to the modern meaning between "bell" and "south" since 南 was a pictogram of a bell? If not, I'm assuming that it's just a phonetic loan :p

@CosmicComet98 Well uhhhh from what I can tell from other sources, 南's modern meaning is a "phonetic loan" or something like that. But I refuse to think that this character was used as a phonetic loan to mean South for me. Maybe there might be a deeper meaning with the connection between "bell" and "south". Actually in one book that explains about Chinese character etymology, it's explained as "A pictogram of a hanging bell used in south China that gives its name to designate "south"." (from pg. 339 of Chinese Characters by Pedro Ceinos-Arcones). Other than that, I'm curious to know some other theories out there between the connection of 南's original meaning all the way to it's modern one.

Just finished reading, very interesting! Since I'm mostly familiar with Northern Mandarin and (to a lesser extent) Cantonese, the pronunciation felt quite refreshing and novel to me, while the vocab and syntax makes me think of Ming-era vernacular prose, I very much enjoyed your work so far, keep it up!

@@SwedishSinologyNerd thank you for the feedback. For the grammar I looked at the Classical Chinese and streamlined it a bit, while for the pronunciation is mostly based on the late Middle Chinese, Cantonese and Some parts from Southern Min language group.
