Celebrate Lunar New Year as Grandma Carol teaches us how to make Chinese Sticky Rice Dumplings (Zongzi)! We make her usual over a stovetop AND in an Instant Pot.*

Ingredients:**
- bamboo leaves
- sweet rice (short & long grain)
- yellow mung beans
- Five Spice powder
- dried shiitake mushrooms (pre-sliced)
- pork (any of your choosing)
- black-eyed peas
- dried shrimp
- lotus seeds
- peanuts (raw)
- Chinese sausage (lap cheong)
- salted egg yolks (from eggs marinated in salt water for 6-8 weeks)
- salt

I DON'T EAT PORK, BUT I ENJOYED WATCHING THEM PREPARE THIS AND SIT AND EAT TOGETHER. A VERY HAPPY FAMILY. SOLID.

You don’t eat pork it’s alright, you can put other ingredients to avoid the meat.. Zong ahi is really nice, it brings back the festive tradition..😍 Thanks grandma for your receipe.. Nice😊😋

Substitute with chicken thighs. It tastes similar without the fat.

It's been awhile since the Church has had zongji (Chinese tamale) making. Wasn't very good at stuffing and tying them together though as all the ingredients would fall out. Sure some of you can relate. 😉 Maybe next time around, I will be successful at it. Thanks, Auntie Carol!

At 35 seconds into the video, you mentioned that the aroma of the leaves smelled like tea! You got me thinking, your grandma and the rest of the world who traditionally make Joong/ sticky rice dumplings the traditional method, though tastes great (excellent video by the way), is so old school. It's 2022! Let's update the tradition, cut out the manual labour, make bamboo tea and then infuse the tea into the glutinous rice mixture and steam the mixed ingredients for 1-2 hours using a vessel to hold the rice, mung beans, Chinese sausages diced, pork belly in pieces, chopped mushrooms, salted duck egg yolks and all the other ingredients and pour in the bamboo tea into the vessel and you still get the infused flavours and textures of Joong but skip out on the production / assembly line. I've made it this long weekend and my family and my parents were very impressed! The key is the tea from the bamboo leaves!

You add it in with all the stuffings, in no particular order!

Usually just add it to the pork and marinade overnight.

The more, the merrier! You can choose different ingredient fillings- whichever you like the most. Our favorites are the lap cheong and mushrooms 🥰
