Forgotten Weapons

7 жыл бұрын

One of the most common types of AK rifle in existence today is the Chinese Type 56 in its several variations, although very few of those rifles are in the United States in authentic full-auto form. This particular one was captured by a US soldier in the Vietnam War, who brought it back and registered it, making it a fully transferrable gun.
The Chinese received the technical package for the AK (and also the SKS, among other weapons) from the Soviet Union in the 1950s, as part of the USSR's policy of providing military and technical aid to other nations sympathetic to the Communist cause (although a rift would grow between the USSR and China later). China would manufacture tens of millions of AK rifles, both of this milled receiver type (the Type 3 style) and the later stamped AKM pattern. The standard fixed-stock rifles like this one were fitted with under-folding spike bayonets. Folding stocked types were also made, both underfolding (Type 56-1) and side folding (Type 56-2). These weapons have become extremely prolific, and can be found in virtually any significant international conflict zone to this day.

I don't know, I sort of agree with him. The original Fallout games are definitely better designed than the ones Bethsoft made. As for TES, anything before Morrowind is sort of goofy, but MW still feels like the pinnacle of Beth design. Skyrim was okay, but the amount of glaring issues, many of which can't be fixed with mods, is just staggering. The only thing Beth really has going for them is that they're more or less the only ones making sandbox games games of this scale. If there was even a little bit of competition, they would be forced to put some more effort into their products.

Yeah may wanna look up the history of vietnam war the vietcong was quite effective and inflicted quite a bit of losses on US troops. The US troops was stuck with the M-16 jamming up and not really suited for the jungle hell US troops even scavenged these when they could.
@jason1182000
@jason1182000 5 жыл бұрын
that norwegianguy yet the North Vietnamese & Vietcong experienced much higher casualties. Not to mention that the Vietcong had been virtually defeated by the end of the Tet Offensive. Also, the problem with the M16 jamming had nothing to do with fact that it was unsuited for jungle combat, the jamming problems stemmed from the military bean counters who thought they could save a couple of dollars. They claimed the M16 was self cleaning and issued ammunition loaded with a different type of powder than what was recommended to save a few extra dollars, but there was the added cost of young American lives. The M16 would eventually receive an upgrade to the M16A1 with a chrome lined chamber and the issuing of cleaning kits. From then on reliability issues appeared to have dropped substantially. However once a rifle is plagued by certain issues, it’s reputation is tarnished for pretty much the rest of its service. *Edit:* Also, the anecdote about U.S. troops scavenging enemy AKs is pretty much a myth. Most troops would not risk picking up a weapon they were unfamiliar with in favor of a rifle they trained with. That’s not even taking into account the amount of trouble you would be in with the higher ups for discarding your service weapon. Plus, the AK has an pretty recognizable signature, you don’t wanna get shot at by a friendly. Now, I wouldn’t be surprised if the special forces guys would use AKs because they had to sneak behind enemy lines and thus had a better supply of enemy munitions.

@fuzzydunlop7928 5 жыл бұрын
@@jason1182000 The higher casualty rates are hardly a strike against them - the fact that they took a lickin' and kept on tickin' actually adds a notch on their belt. They were even able to force the Marines and GI's from the field on a few occasions - particularly up by the DMZ (what the Marines nicknamed the 'dead marine zone'). A reporter asked Major Charles A. Beckworth of 1st Cav "What kind of fighters are the Vietcong?" Beckworth replied "I would give anything to have 200 of them under my command. They're the finest soldiers I've ever seen." The reporter, surprised, asks "The Vietcong?" "That's right! They're dedicated and they're good soldiers. They're the best I've ever seen." Respect the Pajamas, GamingWeasel. Additionally, you have to understand that when we talk about 'The Tet Offensive' we're actually talking about THREE back-to-back offensives. There's what everyone knows as the 'Tet Offensive' which is Jan 30th - March 28th, the so-called 'Mini-Tet' which was Early May - June 15th, and the and the Phase III Offensive which was mid-August - late-September. We're talking three back-to-back offensives coordinated on a national level. They kept getting hit but they kept on coming, that's one of the reasons Tet was so effective on a propaganda level. A couple months before the first offensive Westmoreland is saying "We've got 'em on the ropes!" Well then the attack happens and people are unsure but the brass and the White House spin the line "It's like Hitler with the Battle of the Bulge, it's desperation!" but that's immediately depreciated by more and more attacks. The attacks kept coming and even though they kept getting annihilated it completely changed what both the American civvies and the military brass though possible for the enemy. THAT said - there is enough archival footage and photographs to show that when pressed - and when the M16 platform would fail - they'd pick up anything that worked. This isn't a video game where you drop your weapon and forget about it. The rifle would jam repeatedly, they'd place it on the side of an LZ or somewhere else a back-a-ways from the fighting if they could find a replacement they knew could work and when the fighting was over pick the junk back up and go home. (usually keeping the AK since captured weapons was a metric for success anyway) and all infantry Marines and GI's were schooled on the weapons used the most by the enemy when they'd arrive in-country. This isn't WWII where they're encountering stuff never seen before - a lot of the times they're coming up against the equipment they're daddies used in the last two wars. Your rebuttals to the "gi's picking up AK's" rumor are lacking the context required of the conflict. A LOT of the time it's isolated small unit actions, a lot of the time it's not 'special ops' but we have relatively small units performing recon in the field. The Colt Commando had a big ole' flash hider meant partly to change the rapport of the rifle to make it sound more 'ak like'. There are plenty of instances where it'd be optimal and if you're butts up against a wall are you NOT going to pick up something that works? It's a ridiculous assumption.

These AK-based type-56's are called “56式冲锋枪” or Type-56 sub machine gun instead of "automatic rifles" since the Chinese translation of sub machine guns took the literal meaning of ze German phrase "Strumgewehr". Noooo....it was manufactured as a semi-auto for the civilian US market, and had the "evil features" taken off of it (bayonet, barrel threads, pistol grip replaced by thumb hole stock). MAK-90's and their predecessors, the Polytech Legend, AKS, and Norinco 56S were ALWAYS manufactured as semi-autos, the ATF doesn't allow converted full-to-semi-autos to be sold....ATF: "once a full auto, always a full auto" There were a few 3rd pin Norinco MAK-90's that slipped through and were released into the civilian market back in the early 90's.. ATF has been tracking them down ever since, as far as they're concerned, those 3rd pin guns ARE machine guns.

To make a clarification here, AK in China is designated as 56式冲锋枪, literally means type 56 sub machine gun, SKS is designated as 56式半自动步枪,type 56 semi-auto rifle. So in Chinese, it is not easy to get confused by the name because we just call the AK as 56 chong (56 sub), the SKS as 56 ban(56 semi). Just like in US, there is a M1 rifle, M1 submachine gun, and M1 carbine. If you say, I have a M1 in US, who knows what do you have in your pocket, it might be a rifle, a sub machine gun, or even a tank. Lol

The first firearm I ever owned (not counting the family heirloom .22) was a post-ban Maadi RPM 20" AK that I purchased from a store in the later half of the '90s. I still own it, and it's still my #1 everyday shooting rifle. Outside my vintage collection, it's my favorite firearm, and I wouldn't trade it or sell it for the world. I won't lie, I'm an AK fanboy. The durability and form-to-function of the AK family really appeals to me, and even four years with the US Army hasn't changed my mind on what I would rather have on a battlefield. Even outside of any combat, they're just so satisfying to shoot and easy to care for.

"Bring back" guns of all types have always fascinated me, since there's a story behind them all. I hope I can have one someday, but it probably won't be an MG. Also, quick question...where do you guys get most of your guns? Is it most common for people to seek consignment with you for high-end firearms, or do you have some other source? It just amazes me that so many very unique and sometimes extremely valuable guns come through...you know, prototypes, rare MGs, etc.

The type 56 AK in china was called type 56 sub machine gun and used as a sub machine gun, although it is a assault rifle, but it was used as a replacement of the type 53 sub machine gun (Chinese license production of the PPS-43) in the squad and given to the squad leader. And the Chinese made SKS was called type 56 semi-automatic rifle and issued to the rifleman. So in china, the type 56 SKS is way more common that the type 56 AK. The Chinese military finally realized that they need more firepower for the infantry when fighting the Vietnamese during a series of border conflict in the 70's and 80's. But they really liked the accuracy of the SKS, so they designed the type 81 as the standard issue rifle of the PLA before they started to use the type 95.

The Chinese SKS in PLA is called Type 56 Semi Auto (56半, direct translation would be 56 Half, and 半BAN is short for 半自动 which means semi auto ), and the AK is called Type 56 Submachine Gun ( 56冲, 冲CHONG means charging towards enemy, in Chinese it mean Charging Rifle, at that time.. ). There also is a Type 56 machine gun, kinda looks like RPD.

I want to point out that SKS and AK-47 were both adopted in 1956, but they were not actually both named type 56 as many people thought they were. For SKS, it's "56半" in Chinese or "56 semi" in English. "半" means semi and stands for semiauto rifle, so the official name should be "56式半自动步枪" (Type 56 Semiauto Rifle). And for AK-47, it's "56冲" or "56 SMG". "冲" is short for submachine gun, and the official name is "56式冲锋枪" (Type 56 Submaching Gun). So for Chinese you would never ever confuse them with each other.

It's probably a pre-ban semi auto Type 56, a MAK 90 refers to a neutered Type 56 post-89 ban. I have no personal experience but I have heard that the 7.62mm calibre weapons (AKM/Type 56/L1A1 SLR/etc) used heavier ammunition which meant that less rounds could be carried, but they made up for it with their ability to kill or cause very serious damage with a single hit, and better penetration and range, compared to the 5.56mm which had a reputation of being much more survivable and apparently some reports mention enemy troops being hit multiple times but still able to return fire etc. (In the British army, the modern belt fed L110 minimi in 5.56mm was considered to be no match for the 7.62mm L7A1 GPMG that it replaced in British infantry sections, and the L86A1 LSW 30 magazine fed 5.56mm longer barrelled and bipod fitted version of the Assault Rifle was an even worse replacement for the 7.62mm GPMG, and it eventually gained a role as a Designated Marksman Rifle due to its longer range, longer barrel and bipod support and higher velocity. The 7.62mm GPMG has been returned to the rifle sections because it has the abilities that the 5.56mm doesn't provide) But my original point is that does anyone have any personal experience with the different performance of the 5.56mm versus the 7.62mm weapons?.
@aaronkong8393
@aaronkong8393 3 жыл бұрын
I think your mistake here is having 7.62x39 and 7.62x51 in the same category. 7.62x39 has a shorter range than 5.56 and 7.62x51 (.308) beats both. At close range 5.56 and 7.62x39 I think should have similar damage on a person but 7.62x39 has better barrier penetration.

Actually, the semi position for the safety lever was designed so that it is more intuitive in the heat of combat to push it all the way down. It is a lot easier to push the level in one fluid swoop rather than moving notch by notch, so you are more likely to end up on the semi-automatic position. Then again, it takes a more deliberate decision to move the lever one notch up to full-auto and spray bullets everywhere.

AK can go on without maintenance for quite some time, true. But you sill have to clean it every once in a while, otherwise the accuracy will degrade overtime - which leads to a myth of AK's inferior accuracy. AK accuracy is close to m16A1 if used with proper cartridge and regularily maintained.
