Can you share more about the impact on this opera in particular? what's the story of it? is it massively popular (or at least used to be) in China?

​@@1234dragonskythe name of the opera is chen shimei & qin xianglian. It's set in the song dynasty and the simple story is about chen shimei who was married to qin xianglian but moved to the capital and accumulated greater power as an official under the emperor who finally granted chen shimei with a marriage to a princess. Chen shimei didn't tell the emperor that he was previously married and when qin xianglian eventually came to the capital with their children to search for her husband chen shimei hired assassins to kill them. She was saved by another official named bao Zheng (nicknamed justice bao) who was known for being very upright, honest and defending the commoners. Justice bao then helped qin xianglian sue chen shimei for adultery and deceiving the emperor. The lines that are famous are the beginning of qin xianglian's lawsuit against chen shimei and is basically a declaration of who she is and an accusation that chen shimei deceived the emperor by marrying the princess and committing adultery. This is a very famous play in Chinese opera and chen shimei is still used as an example of a heartless or unfaithful man while bao Zheng is an upright official fighting against the authorities for the commoners.

The name of the opera is "Chen Shimei and Qin Xianliang", sometimes shortened to just "Qin Xianliang". This act is near the end and is called "The execution of Chen Shimei" (he is beheaded after the princess tries to intercede). It's a classical tale, and Chen Shimei has become synonymous with unfaithful husband. Chen Shimei, his two parents and two children were supported by his wife while he studied for the imperial examination, to get a government job, you had to take this exam. The better you did, the better the job you got. Number one place that year made you eligible to marry the princess, given one wasn't already married. Chen scored first, so he pretended not to be already married. A few years passed, his prents died, and the wife and children went to find him to the capital, experiencing many hardships on the way. The "judge", or "justice", is called Bao Zheng (Or Pao in some dialects). He is a paragon of virtue, based on an actual historical judge, which was pretty unremarcable except that a few centuries after his life and death a writer of propaganda made use of his likeness in his writtings. There are many "Justice Bao" tales, and they have been adapted to theater (chinese opera) as well as more modern films and tv series, in mainland china, taiwan, honkong and elsewhere with a Chinese presence.
