Bonding With My New Chinchilla

Hi everyone! Another Finn update, this one is all about me bonding with the little white fluffer!
A couple things to take away from this video if you are trying to gain the trust of your little chin:
1. Use treats and hay and toys every time your hands enters the cage to build a positive association with it
2. Always speak to them while you're offering things, it builds a relationship with your voice too!
3. Let your hand and arm just rest in the cage from time to time and let them approach you to check out and sniff
4. Its a weird one, but I like to gently breathe on them and let them crawl around in my shirt so they can learn my smell that way too (some people recommend sleeping with some fleece and putting that in the cage which is a much more practical way!)
5. Don't be worried if they kack at you or run from you, this normal and will continue to be normal even when you feel like you've grown a bond with your chin!
6. Bonding can take a long time, think weeks to months or even close to a year!
7. And after all this, sometimes chins still don't want to be bothered even if they fully trust you; chins are fickle, sensitive little animals!

Such a sweet boy! I’m so impressed with how you are able to hold him so quickly! We have had our first chinchilla Fern, for almost a month, and still can’t pick her up. She crawls all over us, but that’s her limit. We transport via dust bath for playtime. 😉

Finn seems like such a happy and well adjusted chin - it's adorable how he lets you hold him in your arms already. He seems very confident too, which just adds to his cuteness - such a great addition to the chin family! 🐭♥

7:17 Those soft peeps he makes toward the end of the video seem to be almost contact sounds, the gentle sounds they make to communicate with each other. A good sign! Some concern, some chin-to-chin communicating.

Finn really has the predisposition to become a "cuddle-chin", very obvious from how he just lays down in your arms haha. My oldest (rip) was a cuddle-chin, he loved snuggles and would sleep on my lap if I was sitting by my pc, or snuggle up by my neck and fall asleep. Have had a total of 6 chins now, he's the only one that has been like this, all my others are females tho', and they are VERY "chinchilla" in their behaviour :'D

This video is very encouraging to me. I have adopted 2 girls, one is mama and one is baby. The baby loves me and has bonded well with me, but the mom is very skeptical of me, she barks at me from time to time. Makes unhappy noises at me if I even try to end play time or get too close for her comfort. She can easily sit and stare at me for hours even when I am being quiet and/or working on projects that don't do any noise near the cage. I think she has issues with hands? I took her from a breeder so I am unsure. We have our good and bad days but I was stunned on how fast you picked Finn up! Ahhhhh so jealous. I can do that with my baby but not mama. I really hope I can earn mama's love someday but it's only been 4 weeks. It's hard.

man, when we got our dog (as a pup) 13yrs ago it was only a wk or so till the 4th of july and the people across the street were shooting off many of the extra loud ones. She can't stand anything close to the sound of thunder and/or fireworks. Im pretty sure that first time just scarred her for life, a few yrs later we were outside before a storm trying to get her to potty and lightning bold hit somewhere in the immediate area. between the bright flash and the instant crack, she has never run so fast in her life. It scared the crap out of me as well lol.

How do you bond with your chin enough for them to be comfortable being picked up? That's the main thing my chins have trouble with, even after a long time.

Tbh, a lot of chins just don’t want to be held even if they do trust you and are comfortable with you and their home. And I may get some flack for saying this, but as long as you’re gentle and you aren’t afraid of being bitten, I’d say do your best to hold them anyway so they can get comfortable with it directly 🤷‍♀️

@@chinpals Is there a best way to pick them up? Since they're so delicate and fast, I'm always worried about hurting them when trying to pick them up since they're trying very hard to not be picked up

He’s bonding to you really quickly!! I love that you said he’s like a noodle 😂 I do have a question though about that process regarding my own chinchilla-this is for anyone who reads this. I got my chin from a family with 3 young kids, and a couple dogs and puppies. He was incredibly thin and scared when he came to me. I’ve done what I can to make him comfortable and bond with him; one thing I do is make certain noises when I do certain actions near him. Ex: 4 clicks for reaching towards him/ invading his space, 2 sharp clicks for a special treat, certain words I say when I walk in and leave etc… And I can say that it has worked for the most part, but I’ve had him for nearly a year and a half (he’s currently 5 btw) and he can still be pretty skittish. I’m not sure what more I can do besides just give him time. Any suggestions? Also during playtime he’ll chatter/click as he runs around. It sounds like excitement, but in all my research I haven’t heard of any other chin doing that? I only very recently heard him happy squeaking.

Hello! I am planning to get chinchillas in the next year, I was wondering wether is is a difference between a air cooler and a air conditioner, and wether or not a air cooler would suffice in keeping the room cool enough for the chins

You're right they do have sharp teeth IF they've been taken care of, which you definitely do. They don't bite extremely hard tho, just enough to let you know they don't like what you're doing. If their owners/carers don't give them things to chew on which sharpen their teeth, they keep growing and can become impacted, which is a common malady with chinnys under the age of 5. So anyone reading this, please keep that in mind.

I don’t know if this will help or not but when a hamster does that chirping sound it means that they are scared, which in this case would make sense because he is in a new environment.

Its similar with chinchillas. Hes in a new environment and scared, and it doesnt help that he just got there and then already had hands in his personal space without time to even fully adjust to the new cage and environment.
