@Ram yadav: I don't think Shivshanker menon was behind the strategic restraint policy of india at the time of congress rule. The man was key in the Nuclear weaver India acquired through diplomatic channels. If you watch some of his previous discussions, the National security advisor is a fairly new position with Ajit doval being just the 5th man in the position. And each of the persons before him had to work hard to get it to the position of power where it is now. And each of the NSA's contributed something of their own personalities into the position making it a diverse office to be in and also gave the office a wide range of parameters to choose from in case of rising situations. I mean Mr. Shivshankar Menon was the voice of reason in any situation whereas Mr Ajit Doval is more pronounced in his actions and the years of his role as an intelligence officer, shows his way of thinking. I think the most ironic feature is that Indian govt. was able to pick the most suitable persons for the job at both UPA and NDA govt. rule. I mean for a silent and limited active PM ManMohan Sir, we got the diplomat Mr ShivShankar, and for the Unorthodox and proactive PM Modi Sir, we got Mr Ajit Doval.

@46:04... Nick Burns says USA will be making a huge mistake if they re-hyphenate India & Pakistan & treat them as equal American partners. Sadly that's exactly what the USA is doing today with the F-16 deal & courting Bajwa.

Non-aligned = Strategic autonomy...Interesting

Menon is out of his mind to have compared strategic autonomy with NAM. There are countless others in the India bureaucracy who hold India down.

Did not hear many insights from Menon. Easily could have been mistaken for a historian.

Does the world know that Mr. Menon is one of the architects of the terrible human rights violations that is taking place in Bangladesh. He should be in front of a judge at the ICC in Hague instead of giving lectures/interviews/book tours at the Brookings Intitution.

Bangladesh is nothing but a sissy, which keeps whining all the time about big brother India. India actually gifted you free territory in the border agreement. Take that, be happy and keep your mouth shut

This Menon is a disaster for an expert on China. Just look at his hazy reply when questioned on China's hostile attitude over India's inclusion in the security council. And also examine his view that "strategic restraint" is an equivalence for NAM. ( On this looks so old fashioned fogey.) For most part, the guy does not come across as clear headed.

How can this man be so wrong about past decisions, present events and future predictions of India being an advisor, in 2016. This guy is the poster child of '' being a good boy'' syndrome.

What has India achieved in terms of foreign policy in the last 30 years? India has an under-resourced and under-staffed foreign ministry - in fact India has fewer diplomats than Singapore! The author of the book is simply a charlatan masquerading as a foreign policy expert tying to sell books!
