Today I'm tackling a small adjustment that can greatly impact how easy it is to enjoy your classic or carbureted vehicle. This is also not going into detail of other drivability issues that may be present and can have an impact into how well your classic starts and runs. Choke adjustment is easy to do as long as you keep a few things in mind and understand the components of the system.
The bi-metallic coil expands and contracts when it is heated and cooled. Oftentimes electric chokes are used because of their simplicity and ease of use. The coil has a pad that contacts an arm which manipulates the entire mechanism. That includes the choke butterfly or flap, easily seen on the top of the carburetor, and the idle speed cam which allows for a higher idle when cold to avoid stalling issues. The cold idle has a screw that allows the RPM to be adjusted to the right speed. Not too fast, and not too slow. You will need to work with your combination to find the point where you are happiest with your cold idle.
When the strip is cold and the throttle is actuated, the choke is activated. As the strip warms, the choke is slowly released and allowed to return to its warm or hot idle. The bi-metallic strip is coiled up behind a cover. That assembly can easily be adjusted to provide more choke or less choke depending on your needs. By twisting it, you can effectively make your choke stay active for a longer or shorter period of time. Once again, you will need to work with your combination to make sure that you find the right setting. It is possible to adjust a choke too far and have it not be able to be released.
All of these are consistent with the Carter AFB, Quadrajet, Edelbrock, Holley, or just about any other factory or aftermarket carburetor. Happy tuning and I know that you can get it set the way you want.

Nice description... it's good to mention that there is 12 volt electrical current running through the bi-metal strip in the choke control and the current causes the bi-metal strip to heat up and unwind thereby moving the choke arm to open the choke butterfly... cold its tight and the choke is closed .. as you run it the current warms it up and opens the choke

That should be helpful to anyone who needs to adjust their choke. Nice job as usual, thanks.

Thanks! There's many that are starting they're project car journey and can use this kind of info. I've got a request for a bit more in depth carb tuning video. I'll be working on that one.

Hello! Don’t know if this videos a little too old to get a comment back but I’m having some trouble. On my 80 Camaro with a 650 electric choke carb. Basically I have it tunned really well starts right up and runs great only problem is when I cold start it it doesn’t go to a high idle it just goes to normal idle, and I’d have to give it some gas to warm up but once the cars started it never stalls on it always stays running. I know this isn’t really that big of a deal but I’d like it to work properly yk idled up at 1500 and work its way down to 1000, right now it’s more like the idle raises once it’s warmed up and the chokes off from 800 ish idle to 1000 warm.

Sounds like you need to adjust the choke up and make sure that it's actually doing its job. 2 options, the electric choke needs adjusted, or if the choke flap closes, you may need to bring the cold idle up to where it does something. First, is the choke actually working? Then, move to adjustments.

@@SnowFamilyRacing if by “working” you mean opening and closing yes. When the engines cold the choke is shut and when the engines warm it’s fully open, the choke is working but the engines just not idled up cold. It’s an edelbrock 1406 electric choke 650 cfm

Given that, look at the cold idle adjustment screw and see if it's even contacting the little pad that it's supposed to. If it's not and has an air gap, then screw it in until it raises the idle when cold.

Can you maybe do a video on adjusting carbs?

What kind of Carburetor are you working with and is there anything specific you want to see? I've got access to a Qjet, some Holleys and the Carter AFB on the Riviera which is very similar to the Edelbrocks. I'll work on putting one together, I want to make sure that I address what you're looking for.
