Container growing of Japanese maples is very rewarding and accents a garden or patio so nicely.
This video shows you our containers of choice and a description of all the types we like to use.
For roof top and high patio gardens we would strongly recommend cement pots or cedar pots to prevent the tree from blowing over in high winds.

Thanks so much for watching!

Hi Otto. Your channel is by far the most helpful info on growing JM in containers. I use planter caddy wheels on all heavy pots to move them easily around my garden.

good call on the caddy wheels if you move them regularly. We just use a big dolly if we have to move any big heavy pots.

Just came across your channel. I’ve recently become a collector of maples and definitely will start purchasing conifers soon too. Anyway I just wanted to say I love your content! Answers a lot of questions I’ve had while learning about these awesome specimens! Keep up the awesome work 😊 Oh! Where do you get those cedar boxes? Or do you build them? Sorry if that was mentioned in a previous video. Thanks again!

Hi Anthony, thanks for the comments! I do build the boxes myself but I have purchased also when I see descent build quality. Stay away from cedar boxes that are put together with staples as they tend to fall apart sooner then a box built with wood screws.

Otto, thanks so much for this. The only thing keeping me from getting fiberglass is the strong winds in my area blow my trees over. Any suggestions outside of rocks/bricks added into the pot? Also, can you do a walk around of your Lijima Sunago? I don’t think there are any videos on KZfaq of this cultivar outside of your pruning video. I’d love to see and walk around of yours. All the best!

Hi Jim I would suggest a pot with a wide base bottom that is similar to a cedar box, or even heavy duty plastic round pot with a wide bottom and very little taper from the top width opening. And yes, a couple of bricks or decorative rocks always will do the job in preventing a pot tipping in the wind. You can also have smaller pots that butt up against the larger pot as they help prevent tipping. The smaller pots can have grasses, or veggies, ornament flowers, etc. I will get the Iijama Sunago on the "to do " list with a video in the future explaining all the characteristics, growing locations, etc. It certainly is a conversation piece with people see it on the veranda.

Hi Otto, love your content as a recent Japanese maple enthusiast. I am planning on potting a 5/6ft tall Sango Kaku that is in a 7 gallon nursery pot here soon. Any recommendations on pot size? Im hesitant to go too big, but with a tree this mature I also want to give it plenty of room to grow (and be heavy enough to prevent any tipping once the canopy comes in!!!). Thanks.

A couple of pot sizes I would recommend would be an 18" x 18" cedar box ( 18"-24" deep) as mentioned in the video. If you prefer to go with a more traditional rounded pot, make sure it tapers outward towards the top so you can pull it out to root prune in the future. And size wise I would go with a 25 gallon pot. You could go a little bigger if you like but a 25 gallon size would get you several years before a root prune would be needed

Great informative video. I was debating if I should get a terracotta pot for my Autumn Moon. I’m in zone 5B Toronto Canada 🇨🇦. Do you water the potted JM the same as the ones in ground? Thank you

The watering regime would be daily during the active growing season if the container is not exposed to the rain. I also have a video on watering container grown japanese maples. Your soil mix is crucial as well, I also have a video on the type of soil mix I recommend

Hi Otto did you have to pressure treat and sand the cedar box? I just bought a 19 × 19 box untreated raw cedar
@maplesandmusic
@maplesandmusic Ай бұрын
With cedar boxes, we don’t do anything to the wood. The natural preservatives already in the cedar itself will give you years of use. With that said, of course you can pressure treat if you want, and you may get an extra year or two, but definitely not required.

Are the inside of your cedar boxes lined with anything?
@maplesandmusic
@maplesandmusic 3 ай бұрын
No, we never line any of the pots. The moisture naturally keeps the cedar boards tight together. And also allows water to drain when there is excess from rain, etc..
