Having trouble determining what size rear sprocket that you need? Or how to calculate the top speed of your bike? We will explore the differences between 36t and 44t sprocket as well as quickly show you how to use a program called GearRat, where you input the information of your drive chain to calculate a theoretical top speed.

I have a racing engine with performance exhaust and head and I went with the 40 tooth sprocket and I can go anywhere. hills don't slow me down at all and for everyone who rides bikes with engines buy a chain breaker they really come in handy!

I have a 36 tooth, and it's definitely ambitious in my area. I've upgraded my engine, so I can go 37mph on flat road, but even a slight grade will gradually slow me down to about 20mph. Steep hills are a problem, and require hard pedaling and great restraint with the throttle, to prevent engine damage. I popped a crank seal, so I'm currently rebuilding and upgrading it. The idea is to make enough power to get up hills without lugging the engine or popping a seal. Fingers crossed...

The IDEAL for good torque is 35:1, but the MINIMUM is 21:1 to at least have ANY power under 20km/h. This is for 26in wheel sized two stroke engines.

Think of it this way. 1/44 tooth sprocket gives you more low-end torque for climbing Hills. So less pedaling. 3 6 tooth sprocket will give you more top-end. But you have to Pedal harder going up the hill. It's that simple. If I could buy 50 tooth sprocket I would. Just to pull the hills I don't need to go 35-40 miles an hour

So for someone who's carrying weight and in a very hilly area would a 56 tooth sprocket make climbing hills a little easier? I have the stock sprocket right now and I am a relatively large guy and I pull a trailer of up to 100 lbs the hills around me are substantial and I have to work rather hard to climb them which is the reason for finding this video.

changing sprockets is usfull in some circumstances but there are lots of variables to consider and the rider is the first thing due to weight of the person then the terrain eg road or offroad flatland or hill climbing

It's a crime that you didn't at least show us the top speed for common rear sprocket sizes while you had the gear rat up...just a few clicks. On a different note, there are many comments on 20 tooth sprockets and going 60+ mph...I'm adventurous AF and theres no way I'd want to do more than maybe 35 or 40 mph on a bicycle..especially one with solid suspension. All it'll take is a small pothole or a chunk of hard mud to send you over the bars and likely the hospital. I've taken tumbles on regular bicycles at full pump that almost killed me. I've taken two spills on the my aluminum china cruiser both at under 10 miles an hour and I'm still healing, still riding, but dam if my legs weremt cut to shreds by the gas tank edges as i went forward..and that's after i lined them with some red electrical tape for just that reason. Also thats whilst i wearing jeans...something to think about.

Ask what kind of power you have, and then you can ask about terrain. If you have upgrade parts and stuff and run at 5 to 10 horsepower, you might want to go down to a 36, or even down to a 20.

Do you happen to have a rear axle for this type of bike, and how much would you charge me for that. someone told me it would be better to put a Free Wheel on the back. and put a hub mount instead of what comes with a 2 stroke kit. The one i purchased is a 36 tooth, and the hub mount is a 1.5 " Diameter .. please let me know what my best option would be...

I couldn't find Gear Rat either, but did find this site instead. Just input your year, make, model, etc., and click on Load Gearing, and the program sets up everything for you. You make changes in the spaces provided and go from there. The site has a lot of cookies that my ad blocker on Firefox doesn't like, so I had to go to the site using Explorer instead. Deal with that part on your own if you so choose. The website is gearingcommander d ot com. Pretty impressive information it gives out.

Hey, I'm thinking of going from a 4 stroke to a 2 stroke because 4 stroke transmissions are crap quality & a bitch to work on & had my 4G transmission brake on me for like the 3rd time this year. plus I hear 2 strokes are much faster anyway. Now I'm wondering, could a 2 stroke motor sprocket be adjusted to clear a wider rear tire so I can align it properly with my rear sprocket & so the chain can clear my rear tire? 4 stroke mounts made this easy by having slots drilled into the mount to allow the whole engine to be moved if needed but 2 strokes don't seem to be able to do this in the stock mounting configuration.

According to the same ratio but difference sprockets, then how can we know which one are better or appropriate to use? Thank you so much.

Google "go kart speed calculator" BMI Karts has a nice calculator to use. on a small engine, 1 speed vehicle you want to stay around a 5:1 gear ratio unless you have a lot of power. Anything lower will burn up clutches. A 6:1 ratio will give you faster acceleration but less top speed. a 4:1 ratio will give less acceleration and more top speed. 12t clutch and 60t sprocket gets you 5:1, 12t clutch 72t sprocket gets you 6:1. I wouldn't go a 17t clutch as they are more for weedwackers and chainsaws but I build go karts and not bicycles.

You can also try using a 36 tooth rear drive sprocket or if your bike has gears you can try a jackshaft shift kit. I've heard of people getting up to speeds of 50 or 60 mph with these mods.
