This video is for people who are new to the world of home decorating and would like advice on the types of paint which are available for use on walls and ceilings. The main paints available for use are discussed and their advantages and disadvantages highlighted. The paints shown are for illustration only and many other brands are available.

This is fantastic, Aubrey. You have such a gift of explaining the basics to us non professionals. I hope that more young people take up decorating as a career. There will always be work for them, and they can express their inner creativity.

A really excellently explained video Aubrey...answers all questions for every individual situation in the home. I have used all these paints in the past but I didn't have all this knowledge at the time. Now there are more paint types to choose from. Thank you for making this video.

Hi Can contract emulsion be use as mist coat follow by vinyl silk When painting paintable wall paper does it require mist coat.is 20 percent thin with water is 4 part paint 1 part water. Thanks

Hi, yes you can use the contract emulsion as a mist coat followed by the vinyl silk. Your ratio`s are correct. Hope all goes well with the decorating 😊

There's a lot of debate on using vinyl matt as a mist coat as opposed to the traditional contract matt - I have a small section of plaster on a chimney breast area I need to mist coat so don't want to get a massive contract matt paint and then top it off with a vinyl. Can I get away with using the vinyl matt as a mist coat and a regular coat?

Yes, that will be fine. Leave the plaster for at least four weeks to allow it to thoroughly dry out before painting.

Hi When applying two coats of water base gloss paint does it require to slightly go over it with smooth sand paper after first coat has dried

De-nibbing with a fine abrasive (240 grade) before applying the second coat will help provide a better finnish and also help with adhesion.

This may be a stupid question but how are paints tinted? Is it just mixing two different colours? Thanks for the great videos.

Coloured pigments are added to the paints during the production stage to achieve the required colour. If you select a colour at your local DIY store, they will often mix the required colour for you using the colour mixing machine in the store. Liquid strainers are used and added to the base coat before being shaken like crazy to mix it in the machine. Glad you are enjoying the videos 😊

Is there a difference in application technique between DIY and Trade paints?

Trade paints are generally of a higher quality providing a better finnish, improved durability and better opacity. Application methods are much the same but you should find trade paints will require fewer coats.

Hi Regarding paste the wallpaper can paste be applied directly to back of paper instead of wall and does it require soaking time

Hi, you can paste the paste the wall wallpaper and as it does not expand you do not have to leave it to soak.

how do you find white acrylics Aubrey i find in all the brands ive used in acrylic take 3 coats over anything thats not already white.

Yes Jack, they do not have the opacity of their oil based alternatives.

I would suggest first coating the red silky wall with a coat of Zinsser Bullseye 123 followed by two coats of the red matt emulsion. Hope all goes well for you Judith😊

You will need to first apply a coat of the Bullseye 123 first to avoid cracking and crazing.

I found Permawhite to be really thin to apply and had poor opacity .
