Hi Bruce! I hope this gets to you and you're able to respond to my questions, as I am starting my first refinishing project tomorrow. I've watched many of your videos, but I'm still confused on when to use wood conditioner - is this still needed (or recommended) if using Minwax's Polyshades? I will be using the Classic Black color and although it will be pretty dark, I still want to ensure that it comes out even. Is wood conditioner always a good idea regardless of product being used? Also, I have a solid pine kitchen table (also in a black finish) but the wood appears to be so soft and with not much protection on it, so much so that I cannot set anything down on it without a water ring or heat marks. It is very temperamental and I want to save it before the damage goes any further. Could I do the same process for my current project and apply it to the table as well? It only has a few marks but the damage caused by temperature changes is noticeable. Do you suggest using the Polyshade, or just adding a Poly itself over the top to add more durability? Thanks so much!

Hi Bruce! I recently bought a picnic table kit made from chinese fir. After much deliberation, I decided I liked the look of cedar best. Which Minwax stain would work best for a natural cedar look? There is surprisingly little information on Google about staining (specifically) fir to cedar. If you would, please include any tips or tricks to making it have that beautiful natural cedar look! Thanks so much in advance!

A three part question. First part, our house was built in 1988 and has stained window frames, chair molding, and doors and cabinets in kitchen. The builder used a 50:50 mix of Early American and Special Walnut Minwax stains. I have replaced doors going outside from the kitchen and now have bare wood door molding. Since the door molding has vertical sides I was thinking of using a Minwax gel stain. What is the best color or combination of colors of gel stains to come closest to the 50:50 mix used by my builder? Or would you recommend I simply use the same mix of Early American and Special Walnut Minwax wood stains and deal with the potential dripping of this non-gel stain mixture? Second part, these door moldings are inside the house so is there a need to end with a coat of Helmsman spar urethane? I do not think any clear coat was applied to the window frames, chair molding, etc. by the original builder. Third part, I have replaced our main entrance door with a new composite (fiberglass or plastic, cannot remember - I know it is not wood or metal) door which has wood grain texture but is unpainted. I was thinking about staining rather than painting the door. Would the Minwax Gel Stain followed by Helmsman Spar Urethane be a good combination? I am concerned about sun exposure and peeling and bubbling after a year or more of sun exposure. Thanks in advance.

Went out and bought $200 worth of walnut burl veneer for my truck doors and center console and dash as i will be a show truck DIY Bought your Minwax Express colour (walnut) applied 1 coat and wiped it off added another coat wiped it off and lightly sanded(400grit) just to have a deeper wood grain show stronger which is nice After letting it dry and fully clean it I added your product "Fast drying" Polyurethane Clear Gloss Spray can. I followed the label to the letter and the reason i went with spray was getting thin coats would come out less wavy or bumpy which it ended up having mini bumps not from dust or dirt because i sprayed another piece of wood (pine) after wiping and blowing it clean same results Your colour express was great ! Not really pleased with the Polyurethane

Hi Bruce I am using the minwax dark walnut stain on maple hardwood that I am matching, The color I am trying to achieve is a driftwood walnut colot. I have tried the dak walnut by itself and its too brown, I've started to mix the dark walnut with a gray brown stain which is closer but after 2-3 coats it still isnt dark enough to match the existing hardwood floor without the stain becoming gummy. My daughter made some very noticable deep scratches that went past the clearcoat and slightly into the maple, I tried to fill with wood filler and it simply didn't work. I sanded areas of the floor that were damaged, down to bare wood. Could you please reccomend what I should be doing to match it?

Hi Bruce, I own a house build in the 70's that has pine (most likely douglas fir) stairs tread that is unstained. They have been covered by carpet for 45 years so they are in pretty good shape. I was going to fill in the holes and scratches with wood filler and then sand and stain with a Minwax stain gel, probably red mahogany. At the same time I am looking to replace the hand rails. So here is the question. What type of wood rail should I get so that the stain would be similar to the stairs. In other word, what is a compatible wood species to douglas fir, and your suggestion for stain color to get similar color and finish? Thanks Ted

Hi Ted, thanks for reaching out! Unfortunately, there is really not an easy way to match the different types of wood. You might be able to get a close match, but you will really to test in order to get the right color.

Hi, I am based in New Zealand. When I look to place an order online for a water-based stain (keen for a Cinnamon Toast colour), it doesn't give me an "option" for the stain to choose. How does the colour work? It only says Clear Tint on the can - at what point do we get the colour we want? Thanks - really loving your videos and am keen to try out Minwax. Having issues with my oil-based stain & finish-in-one product.

Hi Ace, thanks for reaching out! Our Water Based Stains no longer come pre-mixed, you buy the tint base (either White or Clear) and then have it tinted to the desired finish color. Cinnamon Toast is made with the Clear Base, so once you have that, it can be tinted to the right color in store. Hope this helps!

Hey Gerald! Either option will work. Apply three coats of polyurethane if you choose not to stain at all, or, stain first with the Natural and finish with two coats of polyurethane. If you choose to stain first, we would suggest testing on a small area initially to make sure you like the way it looks. Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any other questions!

I have some leftover stain with a little linseed oil mixed into it. For the moment, I just kept the leftover in a plastic container with a lid on top (the contain I used to mix and apply with). Is this ok? Not sure what other container to keep this leftover in, as I don't want to pour it back into my original stain can without contaminating it. And I don't have any extra tin can to use.

I’m having issues with my stain not fully drying and is still tacky after 24 hrs. What should I do?
@MinwaxUSA
@MinwaxUSA 3 жыл бұрын
I am sorry to hear that the stain is remaining tacky. Generally, tackiness is the result of allowing a penetrating stain product to remain on the surface of the wood as a film. Our penetrating products are designed to dry as they are absorbed into the wood. Our Wood Finish Stains are to be left on the surface of the wood anywhere from 3 minutes to 15 minutes. If the product is left on the surface of the wood for any longer, it will never fully dry. The result will be a tacky film on the surface of your project. I apologize that you have had this experience. If you have not attempted to apply a clear finish over the residual unabsorbed stain, this problem should be relatively easy to correct. You will simply need to take a lint free cloth dampened with 100% mineral spirits and wipe the surface. Continue wiping until no colorants are removed by this process. Be sure to rotate the cloth as you go, so as not to redistribute the stain onto the surface. Once the cloth comes off clean and there does not appear to be a film of product on the surface, you should be free to apply your clear finish with pleasing results. I hope this information is useful. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
