The Op. 44 is my favorite of Chopin's polonaises, and over the years I've heard many different interpretations. I have to say in my opinion this performance ranks very close to the top of the best. Also, I've always considered myself a Steinway man but this Yamaha has an amazing voice!

Many pianists played this polonaise, but I agree this is absolutely outstanding performance!! Even 18th Chopin competition, just finished, I couldn't find any players that surpassed this performance! 17th Chopin competition would be one of the most memorable competition...lots of talented pianists...just in my opinion.

Yeah, I think the most talented participant last year was Hayato Sumino (Bruce Liu was good but in my opinion not winner worthy). However in the 17th Chopin Competition there were many talented people, and the winner of it was exceptionally talented.

Agreed. Honestly I was a bit disappointed when listening to the 18th Chopin competition. I was expecting someone (especially the winner) to be able to surpass my favourite interpretations. But that didn't happen. Just compare Bruce Liu's ballade no.2 and Seong Jin Cho's and you will see the difference. Cho's could surpass Zimerman's yet Bruce Liu's couldn't IMO. I actually like the top 3 competitors' performances very much for the 17th, yet I don't even like Bruce Liu for the 18th. Maybe I just set my expectations too high. 17th was definitely fantastic.

I think this polonaise has the most untapped potential. So difficult to balance power, tempo, finesse, and phrasing in this one.

Honestly, this guy's performances of Polonaise-Fantasise (no 7) and Polonaise F# minor (no 5) are superb. They easily stand comparison with Richter, Pollini, Rubinstein. He treads the right line everywhere, sound, rubato, fullness of volume, pedal/no pedal. Fantastic performances indeed in spirit; deeply felt, fluent, constantly shifting moods, technically flawless. The quality of sound production is second to none. And these are live, not studio. Magical.

Remarquable. Dobra robota, panie Hamelin.

Talking about a piece being a proverbial “wall of sound” this is it! ‘Ole Frédéric Francois Chopin just did NOT play. Then He afforded you the scenic respite of gorgeous glistening lakes and singing larks and such. And everything in between? He knew exactly what he wanted and achieved it. So very uniquely genius. Liszt would definitely win. Chopin loved to see Liszt play his work and wrote in a letter to a friend how he wished he had Liszt's hands even though Chopin was probably more carefully and delicately emotive in his playing, Liszt's sheer skill (probably the most skilled pianist of all time) perhaps dwarfed Chopin's abilities

People at that time thought that Liszt played things best the first time he sight-read them. After that he improvised a lot! He could transcribe an orchestral score to the piano on the fly, while making critical comments to the author, Wagner, who swore Liszt's spontaneous transcription was better than the orchestral version!

I also started playing the piano when I was 6 and had similar but slightly faster progress when I was 14. Now I am 17 and am learning this one. It isn't as hard as the others that I have been playing (4 ballades). So you definitely can do it! I think you will be able to pick up this one at 17 or 18 given your progress.

i’m 14 and playing this now. I believe you can learn it as long as you build up to difficult pieces like this. sight reading definitely helps or gradually learning more and more difficult pieces. don’t give up because i really wanted to quit piano 2 years ago and it just started to click with me and now i’m in love with piano. also, be patient with your progress!! piano takes a lot of time and this piece took me awhile to learn because i would always put it off. i recommend learning the main theme/section before you learn the easier part (a little before the mazurka). i hope this helps!
