Now, let's take a look at recent developments in Starbase.
One of the most captivating activities has been the testing of B13-the hardware designated for Flight 6, slated for launch at the year's end. Flight 6 may mark SpaceX's inaugural attempt at refueling. Following the production phase, B13 has transitioned into the testing phase, akin to other prototypes. Its initial test involved cryogenic testing, a crucial step in assessing its readiness for upcoming missions.
On the morning of April 25, B13 was transported to the Massey test site, where it underwent its inaugural cryogenic test on April 26. This test focused solely on the liquid methane tank.

During the test, fuel was introduced into the tank, accompanied by venting from storage tanks, resulting in a somewhat obscured view of the proceedings. Following fuel loading, a distinct frost line emerged on a section of the methane tank. Notably, these frost patterns only manifested on approximately half of the tank, indicating that the liquid methane fuel was not entirely loaded during this test.

Despite this, the test proceeded without incident, validating the methane tank's compliance with standards for storing cryogenic methane fuel at temperatures as low as -180 degrees Celsius or -292 degrees Fahrenheit.

Apollo mission didn't have all these technical challenges .. they got to the moon with 1/3 of the fuel and a fraction of the technology

I mean but in the 1960s they were creating an entire new concept of operations , so more development from scratch and with slide rules and written math. So a simpler design but also less computer simulation. SpaceX is doing it cheaper and faster and more complex because of all prior NASA missions and super computers

Great Episode, Kev. I think the fuel transfer in outer space is going to be pretty exciting. I think the hook up will be the easiest. You don't have the atmospheric conditions to interfere with the hookup of the two ships. Getting both to the same speed should be easy. You've got all the time in the world to make that happen. The transfer in the weightlessness is going to be the most challenging from ship to ship. What actually happens with the fuel in outer space? Does the gaseous fuel mix with the solid fuel? Moving on. Have they overcome the chopstick arms shaking back and forth and the vibration when they come to a complete stop? I like the amount of time you and your team put into the update of this episode. Great Job Guys. Do you think the Raptor engines in themselves with be enough to land and takeoff from Mars? Or do you think it will have to a highbred of Raptor and Raptor Vac engines? On the New NASA space suit. I don't like the idea of zippers. They leak. The more one uses a zipper in that environment. The more likely it will have the tendency to leak. The other thing is. They tend to jam up. If they jam up in a critical situation. You're screwed. As good as the SpaceX suit is. You can bet that SpaceX is in the process of making a better space suit. I rest my case with the EVA suit. When Boeing restructured an cut costs. They went about it wrong way. They cut a lot of there top engineers that understood the product line. Partnering with Blue Origin may be a mistake. They are still having BE-4 issues. Falls in line with the management. I wouldn't sign a contract with an industry that hasn't proven there Success or Merit. That's like going to a car company that hasn't built a successful drive train. I like Sierra Space. Again Great Episode.

Jeez, if they are relying on a pressure driven transfer then they are only getting half the prpoellant to transfer as the tank pressures equalise. They need pumps to handle the flow. It'll be really interesting to see how SpaceX will handle fluids whilst in free fall.

Fun fact, oxygen has a freezing point of -218 Celsius. So unless SpaceX is experimenting with using oxygen as a solid rocket fuel source, -270 Celsius is the wrong temperature. I think you mixed it up with liquid hydrogen, whose boiling point is slightly above zero kelvin

Correct. Oxygen liquifies @ -183 degrees Celsius and freezes at -218.79 degrees Celsius. Good catch!

Baloney. All such figures assume certain parameters like atmospheric pressure. Change those parameters and the other figures like freezing point changes, too.

Pray tell us what happens after the fuel pressure becomes equal in the Starship target and chaser. How will the remaining fuel be transferred? Also how many chasers are required to refuel a target? Would the pressure method still be feasible for multiple chasers?

The SpaceX standard Dragon flight suits HAVE NEVER BEEN TESTED IN ACTUAL FLIGHT! That is because a Dragon capsule has never been depressurized with crew on board. So don't tell us how they are the penultimate in space suits until they pass that test. Obviously Isaacman and SpaceX don't think the flight suits aren't up to the task working in a serious vacuum since they have created the EVA suit. You say that the EVA suit does not need an umbilical cord nor bulky backpack. So I hope Isaacman has been doing deep breathing exercises so he doesn't need the umbilical cord you just eliminated from his upcoming space walk. Good luck Jared!

What if Space X aborts a planned catch due to catch landing control issues. The booster and/or starship would land in the Gulf of Mexico off Starbase. Would that be considered a event by the FAA. I assume Space X will reserves a designated splash area in the gulf for that as an alternative landing zone.

Musk's Way Proved Itself.I'm reserved about refueling orbit.The option refueling tank along with the fuel thing should be taken,as an option.Leaving loaded tanks (only) in orbit would open up new possibilities Including for other systems.(Lego systems inqluding for engines)Gas station on Orbit.(and station-ships with gravyti)-Star system. My opinion.

Propellant slosh - I know F1 cars have a mesh in their fuel tanks. That mesh is primarily meant to be a safety adaptation; that way if the fuel tank has a split in it then the fuel comes out slower so that you do no get a huge fireball. But it would also cut down on slosh quite a bit. Maybe the bottom third of each Starship fuel tank would have this mesh in it? Too much weight?

shame they can't show the video at normal speed to reflect what 'full speed' testing really looks like. It's obvious the video shown is speeded up. vapour clouds etc.

The cryogenic tests are not performed using methane and oxygen, they use liquid nitrogen for both tanks. Also, the fuel transfer to the tanker ship in orbit will have to be performed several times before a ship can proceed to the Moon or Mars. This video fails to mention this and implies one transfer is all that is needed.

Many don't understand that in space NOTHING is sitting still; nothing is motionless. We orbit our planet....which orbits the sun....which orbits in the Milky Way....which is constantly expanding. ALL of this motion must be taken into account when connecting two bodies in space, constantly moving at thousands of miles per hour, although it APPEARS to be stationary.

I don't see proper structural changes in Starship's shape. It makes me sure that Musk's team can't understand what happened during the last test with the Starship. Future fly will repeat the same faulty behavior of the Starship as we previously observed. Lack of imagination, not for the first time: I predicted that the launchpad was faulty and now, after one year, they change it to NASA designed launchpad. Better later than never!

Why not park a number of freighters in orbit around Earth with just enough fuel to land on Mars then use a tractor rocket to tow the freighters to Mars where then each freighter would detach and land on Mars.

Once again: the idea of refuelling propellant and fuel is dumb. It comes from airplanes refuelling systems, used in different conditions on Earth. In space ready to use containers with fuel and oxidant waiting for starship would be more practical and safer. They can't use this method with airplanes, but in space it would be much more efficient way to fuel the starship. Ready to use, full containers should wait in space, on proper orbit, for Starship, and should be attached to the starship's body, as it happens when capsules are attached to ISS. Later these containers could be relocated to the Moon surface, and transform into part of Moon city. There is lot of experience with space docking, method eliminates problems with accidental ignition of oxidant (even stainless steel burns in proper conditions) and takes much less time, if many tanks would be joined to the starship's body. Simply instead of two starships docking together in space, it would be a few containers (tanks) joined to one starship. No loss of fuel during refuelling, some simple, automated procedure. Probably it could be automated with use of crane similar to space shuttle's crane, also used on ISS, or automated as docking to ISS.

I would say tell Boeing to get there rocket Capsule off of NASA property and they need to be made to pay all of the over runs they have had and also if they want any kind of contract in the future they build them on there own property and if there is and kinda of delays they will be find 200,000 dollars a day. And also NASA has the right to fire any Boeing employees at any time.

It's pretty simple. Before we can put humans on Mars we need to make sure we can have humans living on the moon. If we cannot get human safely to live on the moon then there's no way we'll ever get them to Mars. They're using the moon as a testing ground for the trip to Mars. That's been stated numerous times.

You can tell that it's not AI by his occasional screw up and the word F&%K not getting edited out when he does screw up.
